Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse, wouldn't quit. He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out. Gentlemen, as of this moment, I am that second mouse.

It's also important to note that the real life Frank Abagnale Jr. is *probably* not a reliable narrator of his life stories, as there is basically no corroboration on the vast majority of the events he claimed to have occurred. The FBI has many people that throughout the years basically flat out denied the events, and there are actual records in a lot of places that prove that Frank was not even at the places he claimed to be. The real life Frank Abagnale Jr. is likely only a small time con who actually turned big by conning the media and Hollywood by selling them pure fiction.

I watched this in a theater in Atlanta less than a mile from the apartment complex that Frank was living in. It’s definitely a smaller scale film, particularly from Spielberg who has done some big productions and had done Saving Private Ryan four years earlier, but it’s probably the reason why I love it!! It feels like a more intimate and personal film from Spielberg who has often looked at families and relationships in his films!

I work at Canadian navel base Esquimalt. A couple of year ago I attended a retirement seminar at a training bldg. named after a Canadian Admiral. During the Korean War he had been the navigating officer on board a Canadian destroyer, HMCS Cayuga. Just before they deployed another crew member joined the ship, a doctor. Because destroyers don’t normally get their own doctor, nobody questioned it. He wasn’t a doctor, however, or even a Naval Officer, he was an imposter named Ferdinand Demara. While onboard, he managed to improvise successful major surgeries and fend off infection with generous amounts of penicillin. His most notable surgical practices were performed on some sixteen Korean combat injuries who were loaded onto the Cayuga. All eyes turned to Demara, the only "surgeon" on board, as it became obvious that several of the injured soldiers would require major surgery or certainly die. After ordering personnel to transport these variously injured patients into the ship's operating room and prep them for surgery, Demara disappeared to his room with a textbook on general surgery and proceeded to speed-read the various surgeries he was now forced to perform, including major chest surgery. None of the soldiers died as a result of Demara's surgeries. Apparently, the removal of a bullet from a wounded man ended up in Canadian newspapers. One person reading the reports was the mother of the real Joseph Cyr; her son at the time of "his" service in Korea was actually practising medicine in Grand Falls, New Brunswick. Tony Curtis, father of Jamie Lee Curtis, played him in the movie, The Great Imposter.

The key moment in the story was actually when he tried his first impersonation as a school teacher. That's when Frank Jr realized he had the power to psychologically CONTROL people and that he could pull off the mind game for much longer than he thought. It took the school a WEEK to catch onto the fact that a boy with no credentials had been teaching classes! There is a great sub-plot in the movie "Teachers" where a school needs a substitute teacher and accidentally dials the number of a MENTAL HOSPITAL where a patient roaming the halls answers the phone and agrees to take the job, shows up at the school and teaches American History more effectively than most "sane" people for a complete day before he is caught.

Great Reaction,as usual.I thought I had already Subscribed but I,defintely, have now. At 69 in London,I am not a Film buff and have never seen Leo or Tom act(I know) but, like the rest of the cast and with SS directing, this was fantastic and though I have seen this film,at a friend's house,I still shed a tear when Frank comes back @ 10.10am....

Oh, wow. _Chinatown_ was in your poll. I don't care if it lost - you have to see it. Let me tell you how good it is: it is among the four or five best screenplays ever written (seriously). Just that. Miss it and it's _your_ loss.

I was given Frank’s book to read before I watched the movie and I loved it. The movie takes some definite liberties with the story in the book, but since Frank spent his life creating deceptions I never really knew which different aspect was true (or whether any of them were truly what happened). Still, the movie was good too, just different.

My Mom worked for our local county as an accountant, and used to go to yearly continual learning government finance seminars. One year in the mid-2000's, Frank Abagnale gave the keynote address.

Loved this film at the theater. It reminded me of a Tony Curtis film, loosely based on the life and exploits of Ferdinand Demara; The Great Imposter (Universal I.P., 1961).

Any body that gets the opportunity should read the book. Particularly the part about his stay in foreign prisons. Makes US prisons seem like The Hilton.

This is such a classic. Abagnale pulling it all off like that before 21 is something all right. And he knew his limitations, backing off when people's lives could become imperiled. Also like how the real Frank makes a cameo, ironically arresting himself in France.

Except the real Frank is nothing like what's depicted in the movie the only thing based on reality is that he's a con artists through and through which including coning people about his exploits.

If you think about his sentencing, isolation is actually appropriate. From a legal perspective, Frank was a criminal who had the ability to talk and charm his way around, out of, through any obstacle. Even though he was still a juvenile delinquent, they wouldn't place him in a facility that he could weasel his way out of.

Understood but extended periods of isolation are among the most mentally punishing things you can do to a human being. Many prisoners would actually prefer physical beatings to long periods of isolation.

Most people (not me) prefer happy endings. I LOVE Clint, but his movies almost always seem to end on a shit note. Even I gotta admit that. Million Dollar Baby was probably my least favorite despite all the love from critics. Saw it in the theater and never will again.

Gran Torino is so, SO overrated. People like to say they like it just because it deals with race. But there is nothing original about it at all. It’s a TV movie of the week.

The almost-arrest in the hotel room, that's a POWERFUL confidence trick, where he gives him the wallet and tells him to hold onto it, I TRUST YOU. In a lot of people that will automatically make them trust you because by coming off trusting and being vulnerable first it puts you in the role of accepting their trust instead of them earning yours. Kind of like killing someone with kindness to make them look like the asshole.

The best liars do so with CONVICTION. They are very effective at making others believe that THEY believe what they are saying. Famous line from BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID when "Butch" watches the hotel owner where he has been hiding convinces the posse chasing him that he has already lefty town and exclaims , "That guy is good! You know, if he told ME that I just left town I would believe him!"

This movie is one of my all-time favorites! You guys seemed to enjoy it a lot too, so I'd like to recommend you a show. White Collar, a USA original, is a show that's kind of like the part of CMIYC we didn't get to see, the adventures of Frank and Hatternaty catching other criminals together. Different characters, but a very similar dynamic, filled with clever capers and tons of charm! I highly recommend it!

Most of the French actors are in reality known French-Canadian actors. At least I recognized some of them. They are not using French-Canadian accents, they are imitating the French accent from France. These actors don't speak with that accent in French-Canadian productions.

Frank Abignale's scams were MUCH more difficult to pull off than anything a computer hacker does. He had to fool all these people IN-PERSON and often performing tasks that will get you instant jail time if you are caught. This was the best example of "hiding in plain sight" anyone has ever done. It should be noted that Abignale also did less risky jobs....and quickly became bored with the jobs and quit. This movie has a lot of the same trage-comedy elements of "Forrest Gump". Christopher Walken's role as the tragic delusional father living vicariously through his son is especially good.
