As an umpire, we are told that by blowing on it.. the defender IS applying a force and thus considered to have touched it. So the moment he starts blowing on it.. it's whatever the ball is at that moment.. if in fair territory.. fair ball.. if in foul territory.. foul... and Lenny Randle started it because the PBUC made that ruling the next day... and all levels have adopted that ruling...

Sounds like a very fair rule

Honestly, I don’t think PU knew the rule here. If he did, he would have signaled fair as soon as F2 started blowing on the ball because in that moment “the force is applied” and by rule it’s a fair ball. PU didn’t point this fair until the ball came to rest in fair territory after being blown on by F2.

Hey ump what do you make of this catcher having to slow down to avoid colliding with the batter-runner who's not yet in the runner's lane? And what if the catcher had just run into the back of the runner in an attempt to field the ball?

That's just common sense, but not always the rule :) Indirect influence of the ball's path should be illegal. I did not know the actual rule, so good to hear. Thanks! I assume fanning your glove repeatedly would be covered by the same rule.

Or kicking dirt at the ball, pushing on the grass to create more of a lip, anything like that. Importantly, it doesn't have to be DIRECT interference with the ball. You couldn't, like, throw the rosin bag at it or something, haha.

What if he had not done anything to the ball but ran in front and pushed dirt to create a slope to make it roll foul?

I feel like Jennifer Aniston's character in office space. "So you're gonna make a mound of dirt in front of the ball to knock off the path it would naturally take? How is that not doing anything to the ball?"

The real question here is: How small are that catcher's lungs that he couldn't blow that ball across infield dirt? I mean, with a field that nicely groomed, he should've been able to move it at least a couple of inches even across that infield grass! 😂

So if he had succeeded in blowing it foul, the batter saw it go foul, the batter doesn’t know the rule and starts returning to the batters box, the catcher could have picked up the ball and tagged the batter out. (And, if there had been two outs and the batter had turned back before touching first, the run would have been negated.)

Do teams spend time learning how balls roll on their home field baselines? Sounds like a small advantage if you know how balls typically behave when rolling slowly down the baselines.

@@SICKMADE702 I watch Antonelli all the time and I missed that video. However, my high school basketball team used to play T C Williams, of the movie ‘Remember The Titans, and there court had a few spots were the flooring had loose boards. They would cover you as to force you into those areas and the basketball would just not bounce up as you dribbled and then they could steal it. Quite a home court advantage. (No pun intended 😉)

The key is that the blowing or other act causes the ball to go foul. The catcher blows on the ball. The ball rolls foul. The umpire determines it would have been foul anyway. Foul Ball.

Suppose the fielder vigorously jumps up and down, very very very close to the ball, standing in, A) fair territory, or, B) foul territory, in a successful attempt to "cause the ball to roll foul?"

This is fielders interference before anything else on the catcher clearly impedes the runner which you can do to make a play on the ball, I’d argue he made zero play on the ball after impeding the runner .

If the ball crosses into fair territory (without being touched) before first (or third) base, it is a fair ball.
@joshuaanderson4090
@joshuaanderson4090 23 күн бұрын
It's not fair or foul until it passes first or third base unless it is acted upon by a fielder or comes to a stop. So if it rolls from fair to foul on it's own before it gets to the corner base it foul. Same if it rolls from foul to fair before it gets to the base, it's fair. If it changes side after the base then that doesn't matter. If a player touches it in fair territory (or blows on it 😂) then it's fair. The exception is airborne balls hit past the infield. Then where they first land decides fair/foul. So a ball could be in the air in foul territory and curve back fair and if it hits the ground on the line or in fair territory it's fair even if most of its travel time was in foul territory. And again, same in reverse. If it spent all it's time floating through the air over fair territory but it curves foul and hits outside fair territory it's a foul ball.
