Nothing better than winter steelheading. Water had some nice colour to it, and the fishing was amazing. Love the peacefulness and calm of fishing this time of year.

I've been using a 5wt for steelhead for years. Sometimes you get some funny looks, but it sure does make it exciting!

@@rickfascinato5758 getting them into the net quickly definitely comes down to the skill of the angler. Which I am still working on getting better at

I just feel like one weight up and you’ve got a ton more fighting advantage while still fishing very light gear. It just seems like your drag is working way too hard. Still, all respect, looks like you get on some fun fights with the ULTRA light gear.

It looks fun with 5wt rod when the drag spools out

they typically dont make a b-line downstream and keep going forever. Would've happened on the 7wt as well with the same results.

Definitely a challenge on the 5wt. I have caught an erie run chromer on a 5wt....except mine didn't put up that kind of fight. Do you always run tandem flies?

Interesting how many fish also you miss on a 5 wt, almost same as the 7wt on the last clip. Well ,no better way to learn other than from our own mistakes. I would bet for killing the barb on the same hook brand you are using for one outing to see if the fish numbers ending inside the net change and perhaps working the rod angle dynamics bit different on the fight. That helps me with the false albacore from shore. Overall great work and I love the intro editing 👍 Stay tight Mag

are you saying lose the barb? for me they are a lot harder to keep on with the smaller hooks, just shows my inexperience here. If I can hook them on a larger hook, it's usually in the net no problem.
@SurfSkagit

@@silvaonthefly not a big deal Silva, fish it’s going to be release anyway, even better, just a bit of a fight and move to the next drift, you are doing great, I’m talking from my own saltwater experience, lost much less fish once I stop the trout hook set by rod tip lift straight and not to the side towards the fish mouth after the take, im only lowering the rod angle, the hook size it’s important, looks your hook set reaction it’s pretty fast also, I would just try different approach until the hook rate shows what you are looking for and not much what it works for me 🙂

@@silvaonthefly biggest thing I’ve seen from a guide perspective, is it’s actually easier to hook ‘em on barbless. Less material to penetrate into the mouth. Seem to have good fighting technique, you’ll have no problem on a barbless or debarbed hook

Hell you can catch them on a 2wt. The problem is that it takes much longer to bring them to the net as can be seen in these videos. This overstresses the fish decreasing their survivability rate. This may do something for your ego but doesn't really say much else
