The engine in our CAT 246 skid steer is destroyed. The CAT 3034 is actually a Perkins 704-30T “T” indicated a turbocharged application. Follow along as we show the differences between the naturally aspirated Perkins and the Turbo.

I’m really glad i came across this video, just bought a 2001 246 with bad block and im parts hunting right now. Highly considering a 4bt swap

I contemplated the same thing. But just having everything hooked back as it was from the factory has value. There's another young man with a KZfaq channel, "Brandonbuildz", he was in the same boat, looking at swapping in a 4bt, he did end up finding a serviceable block, it took some time, but he found one.

Hey Mike, I just bought a 2002 CAT 226 skid steer with the same issue. It snapped a rod, put a hole in the block and worn out my crankshaft journal to the point where it has to be welded and re-machined. Cat wants $1,800 for a new crankshaft and I may go that route. My machine shop and I worry the crank will weaken with welding. The good news is my engine block has a hole that I can tig weld with a patch. The rod didn't hit a cooling passage thankfully. I noticed as you mentioned that this is a hard engine to find and find parts for used. Thank you for posting this video and the perkins crossover information. I'm looking for a engine or parts right now in the Connecticut area. Good luck with your rebuild and a updated video would be helpful.

Just got the machine fired up. I can do a follow up video in a few days. Thank you for watching, commenting. Good luck with your repair.

Get your machine shop guy to get the correct dia gun drill and have him drill the oil squirter galley hole, easy job if u get the speeds and feed right when contacting the gun drill manufacturer. Get the shortest one needed, you can find them quite cheap on ebay. Ive done deep hole drilling with them without a gun drill machine and for this purpose itll drill straight enough for it to work.

It wasn't the tooling that was issue, it was having a machine with enough travel to set the block up on end and still have the spindle clear with the drill bit installed. The skid steer is in service now, approximately 8 hours on the rebuild, it's performing well.

Right angle attachment, swing bridgeport head to one side for maximum table travel. Glad to hear its operational. Im currently fixing someones massive mistake on one of these perkins engines. Lift pump went bad, they thought it was the injector pump. Pulled pump, installed new one bent the post that comes out of the fuel stop pin. Used old shims with gobs of silicone. No bringing the engine to tdc, no measurement of shims, just slap it back together. Tried that and had a run away, instead of shutting fuel off they disconnected fuel injector lines. Also never primed it. Neither one of them know the first thing about how common rail systems work. Spent last two days wrenching, drilling out broke bolts, rounded off heads. I should have ordered some left hand drill bits. Not a fun time, got it back together they only need the two bolts holding the lift pump on. Tried to explain bump engine until lift pump has least amount of spring pressure. As it sits youd have to compress it about 1/4. If I were the one installing it I could take my time and get it in there without bumping it around, but they are friends and i got my own crap to work on lol. They are close enough, just button up the rubber fuel lines and give er hell.

Could you please tell me what that hole is behind where the injection pump is located? It’s about the size of a thumb. On your new block it looks like a nipple is mounted there. The reason for asking is cause I purchased a 226 with a new engine and that hole was exposed blowing oil all over the side of my engine. Thanks for your video

That is part of the crankcase ventilation system. It should be connected to the "catch" filter, that is mounted to the side of the engine. It drains back into the oil pan.

Looking for one of these blocks (non-turbo) right now, no luck yet. Ive called numerous shops locally and reached out across the country to places i could find online. One place even wanted $7,500 for a short block with rotating assembly. How is yours doing?

I am very pleased with mine. We have put about 150 hours on it. It has not missed a beat. Starts in cold weather, without issue.

great video i have a slightly different problem with a 246B which has a Mitsubushi engine parts are to find

I’d look for other applications of that engine. These are industrial engines that are used in various equipment. CAT really doesn’t advertise that fact and would prefer you to believe that they are the only source for parts. Check Diesel cranks or Highway and heavy for parts.

I bought a 2000 Cat 226 skid steer with a non turbo motor that has about 10,000 hours on it so my plan is to have a total rebuild done on it. It came with 2 other motors on a pallet, one with a hole in the block by the back piston and the other looks like the valve cover was removed and they were messing around in there. My question is do you think there any value in these spare blocks?
@0366Turbo10 ай бұрын
What engines are they? There should be a tag on them. That will determine f they have much value or not.
