You are correct in that a lot of people don’t know anything about romance scammers. My mother’s neighbor was duped and eventually lost her home. My mother tried to tell her she thought she was being scammed, her sister, her nieces, etc. (she had no children). She refused to believe anyone but the scammer. She even took that belief to her grave. Horrible story.

I don’t think she blamed the bank, i agree with her banks should be questioning so much money being withdrawn or sent to one person. Banks know scammers exist & need to be more diligent by freezing accounts to “force” their clients to go into the bank to explain what’s up, make sure they aren’t being scammed. She took responsibility for her actions, she said she as stupid, that the loneliness is real. It is sad. I’m only now 50, in 2009 i was romance scammed. It easily happens when you think you are in love.

Kind of helps that they prevented me from doing something silly before we even got together. Ultimately, it's not their responsibility.

That’s the thing though. Millennials on up grew up with technology so we’re more aware of most of the trolls, tricks, scams and catfishing but our parents never really used it and have no frame of reference. They had their lives that didn’t need internet to revolve around. And plus they’re worried about the man in a van giving candy to kids. Then like this lady they get older, their spouses die, get lonely, then suddenly want to find someone online but they have no clue what to look out for. They probably think coming across a scammer on a dating site is a rare thing that would never happen to them when In actuality half the people they talk to are scammers. They protected us from getting kidnapped now we need to protect them from getting scammed.

It's fraud. But it's international fraud, so my guess is local authorities are powerless. Interpol generally has bigger fish to fry, but I believe they do take on some of these cases when an organized ring is involved. Banks will often try to warn customers, but by that time the victim is usually in too deep to recognize sound advice.

@@CandiceGoddard YES. Places like that are FULL of scammers. Even churches and charitable events scam people all of the time, it's not just online and it's been happening for decades. If you truly want to donate to a cause, make sure you do as much research as possible to see that it's going where it's supposed to be going. As for churches, if it's one of those really modern, expensive-looking mega churches or you see the "pastor" in really nice clothes, driving and living in really nice cars & houses, you can be sure THAT'S where all your donated money is going to. There are scams EVERYWHERE. Claiming you're of a certain religion or one you happen to favor or a cause that you specifically sympathize with doesn't make it automatically safe. Unfortunately that's just the harsh reality of the world.

It doesn't have to just be strangers. Long lost relatives can pop up just for money. Same with people you might have known as friends, who never asked before but now is asking.... @S.A No. But, the bank tellers do get involved when they notice such a transaction happening. They intervene as much as they are able to. In my one case, the lady told the bank teller to mind their business because it was her money. Soon after she made the transaction, she realized her “love man” disappeared and that’s when she called us. She had a complete breakdown and she ended being the one going to jail. It was hard to witness that.

She had my whole sympathy until started pointing the finger at the bank. When I was 19 and a bank teller, an old lady withdrew $2000 (from her bank account with $21,000) from me and she had her son with her. Then a week later she and her daughter came to the bank practically foaming at the mouth. Apparently she was duped by the guy that was with her posing as her "son", some kinda scam was afoot. And she was blaming ME because I LET her withdraw the money. I lived in a country where $2000 is a LOT of money. My family and I could not AFFORD to pay her back $2000 and I was crying and terrified because she and her daughter blamed me as if it was my fault and wants me and/or the bank to pay. Lady, you gave the money of your own accord, why are you blaming the bank/someone else? Y'all gonna get mad if we ask why you're taking out a large sum of money and tell us it's none of our business what you do with your money, but you also want us to stop you and/or be accountable for your foolishness. Sometimes they pose as celebrities. One time, a scammer was so stupid as to use a photo of Francois Legault the premier of Quebec, Canada. The name being used was Jean Luc Legault. The dude must have watched too much Star Trek! I call them out immediately. If they have an account with a photo, I do a reverse image search, let them know that I know they are using a fake name & a stolen photo. Of course, they try to deny it, then, once they know they were busted, that profile disappears, they create another one.
