In this trip report, we take a look at Cathay Pacific’s Boeing 777-300ER Business Class product on board a flight between Hong Kong and Sydney.
After my day trip of Hong Kong, I check myself into flight CX 101 and spend some time at Cathay’s “The Pier” lounge prior to my flight. When it comes time to boarding CX 101, I’m one of the first to board due to my Oneworld Emerald status. Once on board, I review the Business Class product - in particular the seat design, storage areas, lighting, IFE/connectivity and seat positions.
During the 9 hour flight, two meal services are provided - supper (after take-off) and breakfast (prior to landing). Much of the flight is during nighttime hours so I’m able to try the lie-flat bed. While I get a good rest on the aircraft, it’s important to note that Cathay does not provide pyjamas or a mattress topper in Business Class. A luxurious amenity kit, however, is provided at the start of the flight.
Upon arrival in Sydney, I’m one of the first off the plane. I pass Australian immigration/customs then pick up my priority-tagged baggage before making my way home.

I hope so too! But my gut feeling says it'll be 2021 when we can start flying internationally again. Much of the world is still inundated by the virus :(

I work on the front lines so have been very busy these past few weeks. As things are settling now, I'm able to do my videos again :) I'm am behind several months and there's plenty of catch up work to do! :p Anyways, hope you've been well too. Take care!

Yeah, I did miss posting videos too. Been preoccupied with work the past few months, but as COVID19 is slowly settling I've gotten some spare time to indulge in my hobbies again :) I should've been trying the CX A350-1000 2 weeks ago and the new Bamford sleep products....but that'll have to wait another year I reckon :s

I haven't been there in years and I am flying to New Zealand for my 50th Birthday in 2022 and will be staying at Rydges Sydney Airport the night before I fly which is across the road from the International Terminal. I haven't flown in over 30years. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Great to see you post another video Eddie. For some reason as a subscriber I didn`t receive notification for this one, and stumbled upon it by chance today. A nostalgic reminder of travel as we knew it before these crazy COVID-19 times. I fear much of the pleasure will be absent in flying, at least for the foreseeable future. Welcome back! It has certainly been a while. Glad to hear you're keeping well. I find CX honours status really well. For example, the cabin service manager made an effort to have me served first even though I was right at the back of business class. I would've been flying their A350-1000 to Manchester last week if it wasn't for COVID19. It would have been nice to see how their new sleep products did, and if they've managed to improve the meal service as well.

Very nice Eddie! I watch you all the time and enjoy all the detail you provide. My favourite, of course is reading the menus. For breakfast, I could not decide between the parsley omelette and the dim sum! Could I have ordered both?😋. Thanks for a great video. I enjoyed it very much. Cheers, Colin.

I've had quite a lot of airplane omelettes, and they always seem to taste a bit bland and yucky after a long flight (even in first/business class). The dim sum is always a good option as they have the chili sauce to dip them in so they're full of flavour :p Take care Colin and stay safe! :)

I flew Cathay business class quite a lot of time, but I never missed it sooo much like now. The last time I flew it was on March 10th this year on CX104 HKG-MEL with an A359 featuring the new business class. Despite it has been a lot of time into the COVID19, the services are top-notch, with decent food, high-speed wifi, and premium services. BTW, that was also my first time flying outbound of HKG on a long-haul flight of CX. I miss the day when people can enjoy their flight without masks on faces, and no need to think about the travel sanction applied globally; whenever you have money and visa, you are free to go. I miss that feeling soooo much.

I share similar sentiments as you, but it'll be sometime in 2021 when international travel will start to happen and the flying experience will be markedly different. I'm guessing it'll be years before we go to the same pre-COVID travel experience. In the meantime, stay safe :)

I'll never understand how you choose your meal! Everything always is described as delicious and so good! I want it all. Maybe where you've flown so often you know what is better?

It is very difficult to pick. Generally it's nice to choose the meal that is related to the airline you're flying or the city/country you're flying out of. I know it's a generalisation but Cathay would probably do Chinese/Cantonese cuisine fairly well because they're flying out of Hong Kong :)

SQ is still my preference though. The food, seat and bedding are much better with SQ. And there's something about those Singapore girls ;)

I’ve flown Cathay Pacific LA to HK about 7-8 times. I’ve never gotten to use the 1st class section and only twice used the in between class. So I am jealous, but I still really like CP and hope they are not hurt too much by all of these world events.

It is normal to use Boeing 777-300er such a medium aircraft in such a medium-haul flight from hong kong to Sydney

I think it's to do with the load factor. CX can fit in more passengers on the 777-300ER than on the A350 and A330.

@@eddiekhoo2046 That's really disappointing. It's basically economy class food (especially the main) served in a fancier dish. I would say that this food is Premium Economy level at best, but far from what's expected of business class.
