Catherine Tate paid tribute to Victoria Wood on 'Bruce's Hall of Fame with Alexander Armstrong', singing 'The Ballad of Barry and Freda (Let's Do It)'.
Additional info:
1. The video is out of sync, sorry about that.
2. She is DEFINITELY singing, but not playing the piano herself.

This reminds me of the version that the Doctor Who cast did back when Russel T Davis was leaving the show (along with David Tennant, Julie Gardner and several others I think) and they did a rewrite of it called 'The Ballad Of Russel And Julie' and Catherine did the 'Let's do it' part and David did the 'I can't do it' part and John Barrowman did the narration and I absolutely loved it lol

The Ballad Of Barry And Freda is a bloody difficult song to do, and Catherine does an admirable job on her cover version. Nothing touches Victoria's various versions, obviously, but Ms. Tate gave it a right old go, and should be very proud.

It isn't a difficult song to do - it's following someone who did it so brilliantly that's the difficulty. Nobody could do it better than Victoria Wood and Catherine's valiant attempt is commendable but sadly way off the mark.

*As a lifelong Victoria Wood fan, my first thought was, **_"It's either a very brave or a very foolish person who attempts a cover of Barry & Freda"_** and especially live! But overall (no not Mrs), I think she pulled it off extremely well. Victoria Wood never had any pretensions about her own singing voice, as she admitted on several occasions off-stage, but yeah, Catherine Tate did pretty darn good here in my opinion.*

@@kldc2156 Yes. Your question reads as though you think this an impossibility. All she has to do is sit at the piano and move her hands on the keys in time to the backing track of Victoria Woods piano playing and if the camera does not film her hands on the keys (as it doesn't) then she is miming playing the piano. Every piano player ever recorded on film from Elton John to Les Dawson, has been clearly shown the notes they are playing and any pianist (of which I am one) can tell that a mile off.

Late to the party - but I got a kick out of imagining this song playing as a bride and groom’s first dance where they are choreographed between moments of waltz and bits of modern dance.

Ok ok, here’s my take, for what it’s worth: I ADORE Catherine Tate. She’s super funny, clever, can sing, dance, act, write, create a truly awesome range of ‘characters’…. The list goes on. This ‘Ballad’ is mighty tricky to DO RIGHT. To get the timing, to bring the different accents and personalities of the two protagonists to life; so that, by the end of the song, we really feel like we know them individually; we know their differences. And herein lies the dilemma. BECAUSE it’s so hard to pull off perfectly, I think it’s a huge compliment to say that, even someone of Catherine Tate’s talent and abilities, had an “ok/decent” stab at it. Yes, half the verses were missing (and in my humble opinion, some of the funniest). Yes, it was significantly slowed down. Yes, the characters were not “bought to life” via their different accents, outlooks, and the tiniest glimpses we got of their personalities. BUT all this is simply testament to just how brilliant Victoria Wood was. It is in NO WAY a critique of Tate’s abilities; purely a reflection on Wood’s brilliance. They are both fantastic entertainers, and UK comedy would be far poorer place, had we never had the joy that they both, in their individual and unique way, have, and do still, bring to us.

So did I and all I can say is your tutor must have be out of tune and off key! oh and as for performing in front of hundreds, which I did when I was studying drama at college! Kylie Minogue to name one of the many) also sings in front of hundreds and many more and she, like Catherine Tate is also tone deaf, out of tune and off key! It doesn't stop her from trying to ruin people's eardrums though! Unfortunately!
@GeorgiaGeorgette
@GeorgiaGeorgette 8 жыл бұрын
Bradley Baum I have had several tutors over the years as I have been involved in performing arts for most of my life. I too went to drama college but was a performer in a semi professional context well before college age. The fact that you were taught drama is of little consequence or relevance; many drama school students are under the illusion that they are experts in music. I agree that Kylie Minogue cannot sing, but that makes no difference to that fact that Catherine Tate is NOT out of tune or off key. You may not like her tone or vocal style, and that is fair enough, but you cannot argue with facts. Your comment is based upon nothing more than your dislike of her, as is evident from your other comments regarding her. Try actually listening and forming an opinion based upon what you hear as opposed to what you think. If you still believe she is out of tune and off key then perhaps consider requesting a refund for your college course.

+NotMostGirls You're spot on, NotMostGirls. There are a couple of areas where she's clearly not singing at her absolute technical best *for effect* (for certain phrases, which is very much in the style of the song), but to suggest she's tone deaf, out of tune or off key is evidently nonsense. (I'm not a professional, but a musician of 30+ years, which is most of my life.)
