Just need to tell you: you have given me the confidence to adjust my clothes that NEVER fit for 60 plus years! I call my “body type” a “tube” aka no butt or hips, big waist and boobs that seem to grow with my waist. Last measurement: 44, 42, 43 - a tube. Been a tube all my life and I’m short so clothes never, ever have fit me! Until now. I shop thrift shop clothes and refit all my garments to my body, thanks to you! First time comfortable in my clothes. Your wonderful teachings have given me that. Thank you! Sorry so long, just had to let u know.

Great re-use of a shirt! I took Alterations at a city college and my first project was to alter a blouse from a thrift shop. That was in 2004 and I still love that blouse's fabric. Maybe I will reconfigure it again! Yesterday, I finally found my tub of ribbing, so that can be used for some thrift store finds. I'm a grandma who has been sewing since I was nine years old. Thanks and I subscribed today.

In Houston I had a co-worker who was friends with Lynn Wyatt. She would house sit for Oscar and Lynn quite often. Lynn is known for her fashion sense. My co-worker, in a conversation said Lynn kept her sewing machine setup inside her closet. Lynn often times up cycled her exquisite wardrobe.

That is really cool. Yes, the old money super rich are known to keep their items and upcycle some to “fit the times”. Princess Anne, Catherine (Princess of Wales) and THE fashion icon of the 20th century Princess Diana were known to upcycle items they already had.

Thank you, Catherine! Because of your videos, I got the nerve up to take apart a baggy sweatshirt partially, removed the bottom band and hemmed it, took out the extra fabric on the sides, recut and raised the armscye so the sleeves that I thought were too long turned out to be the right length. I learned to sew back when I was a perfect size 12 Simplicity pattern, so I didn't really learn fitting. 50 years and 3 kids later, I need to fit things. Anyway, now I have a tunic length sweatshirt that fits! Thanks again!

I shop at resale shops and buy mostly men's button down shirts. Cut off the cuffs and collar keeping the band. See up the packet on the sleeves and then zigzag stitch around those edges. Fine for my farm work shirts. Love what you did here I have no experience with the ribbed stuff though. Might take a try.

i recently altered a pink button down mens shirt. I cut the sleeves off at the cuff then i folded the cut edge up and sewed it then added an elastic so i can push the sleeves up. The cuffs i serged the edges and added lace then turned them upside down, feels feminine. I added a heart shaped lace piece of fabric in the front where the buttons are to cover a stain and it feels super feminine and i love it! I had another shirt that i put on over my head and altered this so i could open the shirt up instead of putting on over my head. I cut the collar off and wear the collar around my neck still while its unattached to the shirt. Its super cute and i love it more now!! Cutting the cuffs off and putting elastic i love too!!

I've been doing that for years as collars never sit right on my neck. I have often picked the collat apart to make bias tape-- fiddly I know so glad for the idea of stretchy fabric binding. I probably would have bound the neckline first then sewed the fronts together. you can als sew them by hand from the back.

I just got a solid dark blue thrifted linen shirt I want to do this to. But I want a more elegant neckline than ribbing. I love that it is now a pull over shirt because I actually hate dealing with the buttons on a button up shirt. It is quite large on me so I might have a piece big enough to use in the neckline. Do you have any ideas? Would you do another men's shirt video with different necklines and sleeves? I'm getting excited!

Hmmm, if you could find a matching silky knit, that could make a lovely trim for the neck, or even a mesh. You could also use a bias binding if you found a good match.

You could also try adding some dark blue cotton lace, sewn on the inside then flipped to the right side to cover the raw edge. I’ve done that sort of thing many times and it looks very elegant.
