"As the cathode rays carry a charge of negative electricity, are deflected by an electrostatic force as if they were negatively electrified, and are acted on by a magnetic force in just the way in which this force would act on a negatively electrified body moving along the path of these rays, I can see no escape from the conclusion that they are charges of negative electricity carried by particles of matter."
-J. J. Thomson (Philosophical Magazine, 44, 293 (1897))

70 years old, been in electronics for 50 years. Very enlightening presentation. Even better yet, I am proud to see anybody that knows electricity is electrons flowing, and they go from negative to positive. The major publishers and educators pushing for the last 75 years to make a positive to negative current flow, including arrow direction on transistors, at least to me, is a crime against common sense. I will recommend this to anybody new coming along. YOU ARE A GENTLEMAN AND A SCHOLLAR!

Very helpful! Awesome teaching! Just one thing: If I'm not mistaken, there isn't a vacuum inside the tube, but there's actually a gas at very low pressure. ( most commonly 0.01 mm of Hg ) Please correct me if I'm wrong anyone; always willing to learn more.

Yes, if it was a true vacuum, it wouldn't work because there would be nothing to carry the current. No atoms means no plasma. In a true vacuum, you can apply all the voltage you want, but nothing will happen.
@rickycool6083
@rickycool6083 7 жыл бұрын
it would work. we actually dont want any atoms in the tube the voltage is applied from outside and also electrons from a outer source. We just want to see the electron movement in the tube.

greetings dchummer. i have a question regarding the CRT. i read that there are numerous factors that affect the amount of electrons emitted. I am concerned with one factor. ASSUME we connect the negative electrode to GROUND and the positive electrode to a high voltage supply, and the negative electrode is heated INDIRECTLY. Does increasing the SURFACE AREA of the negative electrode increase the number of emitted electrons from that electrode? if yes, is there a formula that relates between the surface area of the electrode and the number of electrons emitted? thank you for your kind attention.
