Material shot at the Catholic Hierarchy Centenary Congress in 1950. Various shots of huge crowds of people gathered together in a large stadium. A ceremony takes place under a covered canopy. C/U of emblem of the congress. Two flags fly above it, the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes. Various prayers and hymns in latin appear on the soundtrack. Shots of the crowd in the stadium and of the people on the pitch. Some kneel in prayer. Some of the congregation may be boy scouts, others may be nuns. Choirboys walk towards the camera. Priests, bishops and cardinals process from under the canopy to the edge of the stadium. One of the cardinals blesses the crowd. M/S of the congregation applauding. M/S of group of people dressed in Georgian (?) costume holding a banner which reads: "Catholic Emancipation - 1829" They parade past the camera. Men dressed in Viking costumes run across the pitch - this is presumable some kind of pageant. Various shots of the crowd and of Cardinals. A group of people dressed in Elizabethan, medieval and other old fashioned costumes act out certain scenes from the history of Catholicism. Saint Benedict is mentioned on the soundtrack. Various groups of people walk onto the pitch. It is very windy and a woman has great difficulty wielding a large banner. Various shots of the catholic dignitaries - a hymn is sung. More scenes are enacted in the stadium. Roman Christianity is mentioned. More people run onto the pitch. Men dressed as monks approach a crowd who kneel. Various groups of costumed men and women run around enacting a scene from history. Panning shot of congregation standing on the pitch and those in the stands. Nuns are seen in the midst of a large crowd. M/S of the dignitaries under the canopy. The dignitaries process across the stadium to applause from the crowd. The crowd sits down. C/U of Centenary Congress logo. Various shots of cardinals and congregation.
