In Egypt, the Israelites took lambs blood to mark their door posts and lintels so that the angel of death passed over them. Christianity believes that our bodies are Temples of the Holy Spirit, so when we cross ourselves, we are marking our "temple" with the Blood of the Lamb who died on the Cross, taking away the sins of the world.

It is beyond credulity what appears to be going on in the Catholic church- your points around Islam are very relevant here- it offers a clarity in a sea of chaos. That said, all we can do, is walk forward in faith, our Lord and master Christ walked the same road.

This synodality thing seems to me what is ‘civic participation’ in the secular realm. It comes down to giving all kinds of activists and special interest groups a foot in the door, whereas ordinary people just don’t want to be bothered by politics, they want to lead their lives and be governed properly and justly. It leads to government by minority groups of activists in stead of the opinion of the majority. And what’s more: behind those activists are corporate and oligarchic interests. It’s cloaked despotism. And as for the Church: it’s an invitation to Satan and his hosts.

Regarding prayer outside of abortion clinics being outlawed, to the point that the prayer and holy water is moved one street away, I think that's an opportunity to surround the area with prayer. If you can't march because you can't get a permit, then have strolls around the vicinity with the abortion clinic in the central part of the prayer square or circle or meandering path. I'm reminded of the account of an Evangelical Christian organizaron that managed somehow to purchase an abortion clinic, which they planned to use as a pro-life pregnancy center. The day they received the keys, they gathered at the back door to begin prayers of exorcism. The door was one of those solid steel security doors, with solid working locks. It was locked and secured shut as they began to pray. Just as they reached the end of the prayer the door flew open. They entered the facility and continued praying throughout. I won't go into detail of what they described finding left behind, but it was terrible. Once they completed the exorcism prayers they began the clean up operation. As they left for the day, the neighbor lady across the street came to speak to them. She said that there had been a strange gargoyle above the front entrance to the facility ever since the abortion staff had moved in. She said she thought it was odd that a supposed health clinic would place such an odd decoration above the main entrance. But then she said that sometime after she saw the new owners enter the property, that gargoyle flew off. It had startled her, and she just wanted them to know what she had witnessed. It was at a clinic in the West of the US State of Michigan, so it caught my attention, because I live on the East side of the State. I think certainly that praying around the whole vicinity is helpful, because the people going in and out have to cross the path that's been prayed over. Of course it's best to be able to reach out to women who are going inside, and to offer them real options of support, but if you're denied that, then persevere in prayer. And like one of you said, who can tell the difference between holy water and unblessed tap water or bottled water, or even seltzer? If local government or law enforcement claim to detect that the water has been blessed, well that indicates demonic possession. Not that you could use it against them, but I suppose then you'd know who to pray for that they would seek to be released. As always, 3 Hail Marys prayed immediately upon listening.

The totalitarianism is suffocating for me in so many areas of life from work, social space, kid's school. Lots of treating the symptoms (poorly) and not enough root cause (respecting ourselves and others - interesting about the clarity around Islam!). This is great work you are doing! 35 years ago my wife and I decided to home-educate our children. Over the years we've seen how this choice has saved the sanity, and in some cases, the lives of many children. Some schools are definitely not safe spaces, especially nowadays. If I was a parent of young children today there is no way that I would send them to school. Sadly, for Gavin's neighbours in France, home-education is not an option. It was illegal, and remains so.

I went to the parish synod meeting and was told I could not attend again. I was not rude. What the leaders did not like what I said, as I asked for the Latin mass. I also pointed out that Christianty, Judaism Islam and Hinduism are incompatible with each other. Something that any proper Christian, Jew, Muslim or Hindu would agree. One of the central tenants of both Judaism and Islam is the rejection of Jesus as God. Hinduism rejects the notion of a transcendent God who is not part of the Universe. The synodal way is the blatant rejection of the truth that different religions are incompatible. The synodal way is the way of John Paul ll at Assisi in October 1986 who at that event definitely did not believe in the splendour of the truth. What we see in society is the result of Saint Paul's letter to the Romans (first chapter verses 18- 32). Society is blind because we want to be blind, so we can fulfil our worldly desires.

@DrGAshenden

THat's true of course. The situation was politically complex; but I have been struck re-visiting the history as a Catholic how although the matter was presented as one of political necessity, there was no evidence that Catholic priests were fomenting insurgent uprisings... it was clear to the Government of the day that they were simply providing Mass for people who stayed faithful to the Church that had been in the Islands for over 1,000 years before this new state-led schism. Since they tortured all the priests they caught, they were not short of information. What began to astonish me was that it becomes clear (despite state propaganda) that the hatred was directed towards the Mass, and the faithful Catholics in a way that was disproportionate to any issue of national security. One might explain it as the over-reaction of a reason that was insecure about its own legitimacy, but the matter of proportionality still exists I think. It's not really a matter of tit for tat, as the history is so often presented as, but of an assessment of the intense hatred and fear.

It is far more complicated than you think. The Papal sanction of killing Elizabeth in 1570 was a response to her suppression of the rising of the northern Catholic earls in 1569 and the genocidal policies of her regime against Catholics in Ireland, as well as her intervention in the religious wars in France on the side of the Huguenots. The Massacre of St Bartholemew's day in 1572 was the result of a combination of factors, including the residual fear within the French royal family of a repeat of the Conspiracy of Amboise in 1560. Add to this 10 years of war against the Huguenot heretics, their sacking of churches, killing of priests, and desecration of relics and the Eucharist, the hot weather and 3,000 armed Huguenots in Paris, then it is not at all surprising that the Paris mob eagerly joined in what was initially a targeted removal of Huguenot leaders in 1572.

I am not afraid of the synodal process, however, the sin-nodal process is another matter. We can see that much of the church in Germany, for instance, is far gone, not Catholic, and in the hands of confused men at best and knaves at worst, but either way, it is not good. So the synodal thing will allow things to float to the surface and allow it all to be seen. The church will then have to actually confront what has been secreted away in the hearts of many, which is to say it is an exercise of exposing realities. It will not be pleasant for those committed to the faith, but it will shine a bright light on what needs to be seen. After that I suspect a long and painful period for faithful Catholics, and those aspiring to be faithful Catholics. I suspect severe persecution among those "in the way" of "progress" unless the pope fixes it. It could be generations, it may be longer, it may be after an atomic war that devastates the earth. Let's face it, things in the world are headed in very bad directions: ZERO statemen in the world, massive genocide against babies for decades, rampant sexual deviation and perversion, tinkering with human DNA and other Frankenstein stuff.

Maybe the reason young men are being drawn to Islam is that once they consider the state of contemporary young women, the guys yearn for a safe space where the rules of conduct are clearer. The tenets of Cultural Marxism find their greatest proponents and acolytes in the ranks of teenaged women up to around age 35 here in the States, and a lot of them, judging by their social media posts, are pretty much out of control.

Can any of you answer this: Why do you prefer to describe yourselves as "Catholics", rather than as "Christians"? Other friends of mind have commented upon this tendency. Personally, I try to follow the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, who I believe was the God of Israel, embodied. Following his death, many of his most intimate followers testified that they had seen Jesus; and accorded him the title of Messiah ('Christos'): so I think the word 'Christian' is an honourable one. According to the late RPC Hanson (A Dictionary of Christian Theology: Ed, Alan Richardson), the phrase 'the Catholic Church' first appears in the writings of Ignatius, around 112 AD. Thus it is not a term found in our canonical scriptures: so why is it to be preferred?

Have thought this over from yesterday (after being irritated by your headlines click bait impact, straight talking here) But anyway with your contacts, is there no one that can legally argue that crossing oneself is obviously not human communication! As it is between a human and a Deity (and in some circumstances is a warding off again, of an unseen entity). Obscene gestures are banned , however this is a sacred and not a conversational gesture. Unless the only argument now is "if it made someone anxious" which basically means that most useless and disordered amongst us have been given the unlimited power of Tyrants, that never ends well. But l never understood why we don't have church bells anymore, or even when that happened, the oh but, then acquiescing ... Not with a bang but with a whimper ...
