@Joe Bloggs it's right there in the video... She ran the fastest. You can't deny that. Her ethnicity didn't somehow make her run faster. That was her talent, hard work, and determination.
@dancingdani252 жыл бұрын
@Joe Bloggs there wouldn't be quite as much celebration for a white girl because no one told that white girl she couldn't do it because of her skin colour and background. It was a bigger deal when Cathy won because she proved that aboriginal people are just as capable as any other Australian, which is something many people didn't believe. Her people were oppressed with no rights and she gave them the spotlight in a wonderful way. Of course that's going to be hugely celebrated! It's important for equality.
@dancingdani252 жыл бұрын
@Joe Bloggs it's not even about the running. People have disrespected and oppressed aboriginal people forever and this was an opportunity to shine a light on them and let people realise that they deserve to be treated with the same respect that other Australians are.

@@Johhny_B I guess you’re trolling, but for the benefit of others who may be genuinely interested, Freeman’s time of 49.11 in Sydney would have won the Gold in Athens, Beijing, London and Rio as well, plus the Silver in Tokyo. I wrote my original comment before the Olympic Final in Tokyo… where Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas ran 48.36 which is 2nd only to Perec’s 48.25 OR from Atlanta. Since 96 , Freeman has the 3rd and 5th fastest times set in an Olympic final. I haven’t gone back beyond that because questions start to arise regarding times set whilst doping. The 96 Atlanta final had 4 of the top 10 times set in an Olympic final in this time span… the top 7 all ran sub-50 seconds. So I guess that settles the issue you raised?

Bruce is an absolute legend. I grew up in Adelaide when he was Ch.7's lead commentator in the SANFL in the early 1980s before he moved to Melbourne. Australia's best ever sports commentator bar none. And we have had some class commentators including Rex Mossop, Ray Warren and Frank Hyde (rugby league), Gordon Bray (rugby union), Johnny Tapp (horse racing), Mike Raymond, Garry Wilkinson and Neil Crompton (motor racing), the late Darrell Eastlake, he of the HUUUUGE voice, who did both rugby league and motor racing and of course the late great Richie Benaud in cricket. Australia won't ever have a bigger sporting moment than this. Olympics on home soil, Cathy the face of the games and her people with the reconciliation movement that was so prevalent at that time. The entire circus build up to the race with Perec leaving, her coming out in the spacesuit, 116 thousand people in the place. If McAvaney calling with 60m to go 'cathy lifting, goes up to Graham, takes the lead, looks a winner' doesn't still give you goosebumps you aren't human.

Im a born and raised Sydney sider, I went to this race when I was a kid, I’ve never felt something so atmospheric in my life. Having an Australian/ aboriginal women win at the Olympic, on her own turf is amazing and was an amazing moment in our history.. I actually can’t believe this was 20 years ago . Also to have her light the torch on the opening ceremony was even better. Before this, I remember being in school, and the Olympic torch went around the country, and we got to meet her in school and hold the Olympic torch with her

Deliberately searched for the Aussie commentary. Loved hearing the crowd's cheering lift at 0:53 and then again at 0:56.
