In September I made one of my little videos for you while I was travelling through Paris. The subject? "Anything is possible."
Little did I know that the lesson was for me, because two weeks later, something extraordinary fell into place, taking me back to Paris one more time. I NEVER would have dreamed this was possible before!
*** Any changes to the address given in the video will be added here in future if necessary.

Oh, absolutely! It is the wonderful dress historians like you, Cathy, who are the spirit of the House of Worth. I am somewhat surprised to hear that, famous as Worth was and as much as he made Paris the capital of fashion, the building was not kept and turned into something of a museum (at least ONE floor of it), and I am sorry it was disappointing to get in there and find nothing but modern office space. But I love that you got yourself an address there.

Welcome to the world of historical sewing, Carrie! Those of us who follow our Cathy and a few others appreciate the workmanship and craft of fashion throughout the ages. In the process, we encourage each other in our endeavors to "get it right"...which isn't easy. Our Cathy is a great motivational speaker and our cheerleader. The House of Worth was the very first establishment for haut couture in the world. You should look up Worth online, his story is quite incredible. Examples of his dresses are in museums around the world, so it would be like being able to have as your address "1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington D.C." for a dressmaker/historian/fashion teacher. Now you know why we are excited for her.

@Carrie F Welcome! I have only been here a few weeks, but Cathy and Bernadette are mesmerising in their passion! Quick recap: Worth makes fabulous gowns in early 19th century for royalty and elite. Cathy is in love with a gown called the peacock dress and has KZfaq videos going back 10+ years about trying to recreate the dress. Go to Bernadette Banner's page for the story so far. We think Cathy is about to do it.... But they are keeping us in suspense! 😁

When you complete the Peacock dress, take it to this Paris address to sew the final stitches so it can be a Worth reproduction completed in Worth's own house. As Foundations Revealed grows, you should take out more spaces until you control the house and restore it to its fashion significance again!

I was thinking more along the lines of hiring a small suite in there for the Peacock Dress unveiling, ( since it would be far too common to call it a reveal ). As an existing customer Cathy would get good terns and Regus would love the publicity.

There is a beautiful architecture book entitled, "How Buildings Learns." (Stuart Brand). Good buildings adapt to changing demand, to new spirits. I am not sure if Worth built the structure or if he adapted an existing structure for his plans. It sounds like the building continues to adapt, with a virtual office bringing back Worth's spirit. Was it calling you? Exciting......

Stop making us cry, Cathy. My vast-for-my-age checkered past includes interning as a structural engineering student at a construction site in Helsinki, Finland, in one of the 200 year old houses in the old town center in a similar architectural style (the city burnt down in a war in 1808, and its new owner, the Tzar of Russia hired an architect to create a master plan that emulates neoclassical Parisian architecture, so it is no wonder), where the old palatial house's bones were disguised away by cubicles and dropped ceilings. They were taking everything apart to remodel the building, and I'm hoping this will give you hope: My first task on the site, as one of the few expendable hands on deck who knew how to read blueprints, was to walk around and photograph every remaining antique fireplace, remaining antique parquet floors, all antique trim, and even the carved, painted antique tall ceilings as they emerged from under the modern office veneer, which were, after documentation wrapped in bubble wrap, plywood, and hidden away, before the new construction began. I was working off of photocopies of original 19th century blueprints to mark out where everything was. It had been an apartment building ("condominiums" for Americans) with the two main residences with their *ballrooms* on the ground floor, and then beautiful residential rooms on the second floor, and upper middle class rentals above. Servants' housing along the back courtyard side of the building, and in the periphery behind the really nice big homes smaller, lavishly decorated, apartments along a stairwell accessed from the street, with 2-3 rooms and a kitchen that looked like they may have been "bachelor homes" for young professional sons not ready to start a family. I heard some grumbling on the construction company's part, they were doing it more to appease the looming museum curators and conservators, but I grew up with people who conserved, preserved, and displayed antiques as a lifestyle, so I appreciated it, and was thriving. These antique architectural treasures were found to be still all there under all the modern clutter, protected with bubble wrap and plywood, and the plan for the newest round of work was to build around them, and display them, rather than hide them in the newest round of renovations. I didn't get to see the end result, but I know those beautiful old things are still safely there. A lot of the time in the past, when offices were modernized, it was far cheaper to leave the old elements of a building in place (I even found larders that still vented to the exterior on the courtyard side, which gives kitchens away long after the Victorian stoves have gone - the foundations usually remain, if you look closely), than to pay someone to chip away at them with chisels, so everyone should collectively cross their fingers for House of Worth still sitting there, under the modern veneer. 🤞💗 I did not expect to get this wordy. I do it a lot. I am very timid in person, but give me a keyboard, and architecture to ramble about, and I run amok! 🤓🤓🤓

Hello Mrs Cathy Hay, i am from the Netherlands so excuse my bad English. I want to thank you . A big thank you. I am in therapy for PTSS and I am told to practice mindfulness. I read some books about it and looked it up on Internet. But it didn't bring me what in need and I didn't understand it. In my search I came up to the KZfaq site of Bernadette Banner. Because I like sewing and love the way she does it. After watching all of her movies I start watching yours. And it touched me. Every thing you say it looks like you talk to me directly. Sewing is as I see the metafore. For the way to look at things in your live. It is helping me a great lot. I guess this is what they mean with mind fullness. Every time that I'm not feeling good I watch a movie of you and sit down for one hour doing nothing. Or take a walk in de Forrest. Or just listen to you. So dear Mrs Hay, from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU... PS. I also start sewing again.

Maybe no one realizes how important can be to pass on the history of a style to generations. They were not only skirts, gowns and laces, were a way those people wore or worked or had fun in wearing or just creating these masterpieces. It takes a special sensibility to understand all of this. Today in jobs there is not much of our soul. Maybe I'm wrong but this is how I feel.

And then it's also heartbreaking like hellooo how can people be so ignorant like why isn't he appreciated ! The building which should be treated as gold, how can people think it as plastic, it pains to see how even after Paris being the fashion capital of the world has forgotten its very origin, it's roots, THE place, where it all happened! Oh dear Cathy! Bernardette introduced me to your dream, and now I am a fan and follower of it too! Your video had me sobbing by the end of it so hysterically, my wife came to see if everything was allright. Thank you infinitelly for showing me that dreams come true, one whim at the time!

CONGRATULATIONS Cathy!!!! I'm sure the phone call between Bernadette Banner & yourself after doing this was 99% fangirling & 1% business. I wish you could take over a large section of the building. Then get the management company to remove the modern "improvements" like the drop ceiling & the partitions so you may restore at least a portion of it.

It is a shame how much they have modernised the interior architecture. Such an amazing building though with just as spectacular history.

Hopefully not - all I saw was interior additions, so I like to imagine that there are lots of beautiful original features hidden behind there!

I am willing to bet that the original building ceiling is beyond those suspended ceilings. When the previously 'lost' Britannica Panoptican music hall in Glasgow was first traced by an actor/local historian (it's where Stan Laurel had his debut) it contained an industrial laundry company, and it looked like it had been gutted and 'new' walls and a suspended ceiling were put in. When they started taking the walls down for the renovation they discovered all the original features including original wallpaper, and the original ceiling above the suspended one. Wouldn't it be amazing if the original interior had been preserved in a similar way?

This is just wonderful, I understand that feeling, took a picture in front of the building this summer when visiting a friend, and thanks to you, Bernadette and other ladies on here who make lovely items, I’m actually back to my first “love” sewing clothes, and vintage patterns as well, love your style, thank you for inspiring so many of us. Sincerely Wilhelmina

That is absolutely EPIC! It's cool, even if it is a letdown to see it ordinary, to be able to walk in the same places those historical figures did all those years ago. I'm so happy/excited for you. Thank you for sharing. Best kind of fangirling ever!

I love how excited you got over having a virtual office there, so to speak, as the real offices were underwhelming. I know what you mean about feeling it when you go certain places. That is how I felt visiting the vendors on the Seine across from Senelier, and of course a lot of the architecture there. Most of our architecture in the U.S. is new.
