Please tell me that y’all aren’t serious. You know that doe’s tell their fawns to hide and she runs away hoping for the predators to follow her. Fawns have no scent and excellent camouflage so are much safer hiding than with her. The best thing you can do is look, and leave them alone. If you are concerned they’ve been abandoned, come back every day for three days. Doe’s will look for their fawns for three days, if the fawns are still hiding after three days, they are abandoned. Odds are in this case the doe heard the truck, gave her fawns the hide signal and bolted.

leverets (young hares) do the same as well. They stay in a hollow and wait for the doe to come suckle them. The doe leaves them again immediately after feeding, which might seem uncaring, but is in fact for protection. It's to minimise scent round the offspring that might attract predators.

@Aye_Aye _Atlantic Either way I believe it's better that wild animals are free , most people don't own big houses or have gardens so it's somewhat prisoning. I have no problem if they let the animals run and get the chance to feel free. Most animals are not meant to live in a house. They will be much safer in a home and definitely live for much longer but they have wild instincts. It's better for you to visit them often rather than living with them in the same house. We found a new-born fawn next to the spigot at side of our house in spring of 2023, it was late morning. Baby fawn sooo frail - couldn't walk, she just lay there curled up against the foundation. My wife was startled by the little fawn when she went to unwind the water hose for the burn pile. So, what did we do? We went about our day - yard work, cleaning the yard raking burn pile etc. We kept an eye on her, but we stayed clear and NO touching. Mama showed up around mid afternoon - and fetched her little baby ... she got up immediately wobbled over to mama and the feeding began. These two still come by almost daily - they are doing very well.

@Fulgrim-gm2dg Apparently it’s a myth that deer mamas will abandon fawns with human scent on them. However, it’s still recommended that people don’t touch fawns because the added scent could draw predators. Fawns have faint scents asa protective measure. Getting human smell on them defeats that purpose.

So, for anyone who's confused: baby deer get left alone by their mothers all the time. Their coat is built to blend in, so it's the mother's job to make sure they're in a safe place before going off to forage or whatever they do, then they come back. The fawns do not have instincts to run, because they have to stay in one place so the mother can find them.
@charlenefaye3 жыл бұрын
but isn't a road like the least safest place. Now I understand a deer mother doesn't probably understand how dangerous a road is. But just looking at the road you can clearly see the bambies are not camouflaged at all. So alone that gives me the obvious vibes of 'this is not a good place to leave my babies.' She probably did do that for the reason you are telling us. But I am concerned about what this mum sees as save and not save. One bear or wolf on that road and they would have been dead.

Honestly, deer is one animal that is so friendly and easy to domesticate that it’s a wonder they aren’t pets despite horses being such. These creatures are right up there with dogs and dolphins. Very friendly and docile.
@cyninbend Жыл бұрын
Not that docile--they will get so excited, even violent if they sense anything, whether threatening or just a surprise or unknown. Their antlers grow back every year and can kill. Their hooves can kill as well. We have deer in my neighborhood--if they are visiting, I stay inside until they leave. They can kick a dog, or but anyone or anything with antlers. Love them without imputing Bambi to them. They need their ferocity to survive. But yes, they seem so sweet and do not pick fights or prey on others. A nice example. I let them eat anything in my garden. Never poison or use artificial crap on the plants so they are safe. They sleep under my trees sometimes--I find everything squashed 😴🤫😉 But I take care not to let them feel cornered. I find them right up on the porch when they think I'm not there or asleep. Open my door right into them sometimes!--I close it to let them get away safely before I go out. But they seem to feel at home when I'm inside or gone. They nibble everything the books say they don't, like hardy geraniums... I have a big bird feeder, maybe that makes them feel like animals own this house?

Most likely they were moving about until the truck approached. Their instinct is to get into the position they were found in and remain perfectly still. I cannot explain what motivated the first one to approach the man. I would imagine that is quite unnatural. Many times I have pulled over on busy highways where fawns were hanging out close to the roadway with the intent to drive them back into the woods and out of harms way. In all cases, I never got this close as they fled back into the woods just as I hoped they would. They are such precious and gentle creatures.
Since Deer are ruminants, the Babies will imprint and bond with almost any animal, especially if that animal reacts benevolently. yeah I hate to be a naysayer as well, but perfectly healthy fawns usually stay put and play dead. They have everything they need from mama and are taught not to move for anything. The fact that these fawns got up and interacted with him (looked like the one was looking for a nipple to nurse on), makes me think they actually needed help. They might have been hungry, something may have happened to mama. Their ears looked a bit dehydrated. I really hope they made it, but I'm afraid something was wrong here (mama dead).

When I was twelve years old, I rode my bike to a park with a big forest nearby on the daily. The bike trail had loads of greenery, and the trail was pretty rough. I accidentally rode too far on the edge, and fell off my bike. It was a little bit of a fall, just behind some bushes. But I was eye-to-eye with a fawn. The poor thing looked as startled as I was. It’s one of my favorite experiences with nature. I hope the fawn had a good life.
@cyninbend Жыл бұрын
My experience on the forest floor was much worse--the heat got to me and I just about passed out a few hundred feet into the forest. Lay down very fast to the side of the trail (to May Lake up in Tuolemne Meadows, Yosemite's high country). I was there for about 15 min till the dizziness passed. When I got to my feet a snake slithered away.... I've been told it was a safe snake, black with green stripe(?s) the length of it...they don't bite. I scared it as much as it scared me, but I practically stripped on the trail to make sure none of its friends were along for the ride. Today it's funny but then it seemed like the worst day ever. My druggie sister had kept me waiting in the parking lot for nearly an hour in 90+ temps. Then nausea, the snake...I was waiting for a bear to be blocking the path or worse. I love your story. Kind of ET!

Bruh Moment well, that they are doing is cutting down trees, but they legally have to replant them most of the time. the forest is going to grow back. and you can see in the last shot as well it is severely overgrown.

They actually have to to maintain a healthy forest. They don't usually cut those trees down on which there are nests and usually they cut 1 out of 3 or 5 trees, they'll also prioritize those which are already dead so it's not that they're destroying forests.
@t1mmaeh3 жыл бұрын
Well, I guess the deer doesn't know that they cut the trees because the forest is "overgrown" or that they replant some or if they cut down 1 in 3 or whatever

Their mom was probably watching them the entire time. That truck was so loud, those babies might not have heard her calling them back into the woods so their natural curiosity took over. Luckily the person they encountered was a kind soul and they weren't harmed or taken as pets. Those babies were healthy. I've had my share of fawns under my care and I know what malnourished, abandoned babies look like and these guys are fine. 💕

Found a dear like this once. Was really worried for it because it still had its spots and didn't have an adult deer anywhere near by. I sat a ways away and observed the deer, fed it a few maple leaves, but no adults ever came back for the baby. I figured it was a predator as it wasn't hunting season. I was too young to take it back and raise it, but it did go to a shelter, and I got a chance to hold the little guy and wait by the road with him. I've noticed that baby deer are weary, but are desperately looking for a guardian when they lose their parents. They follow because you came to them, reached out, acted slowly and did not harm them. The one in the woods followed close by me after I fed it (I waited 4 hours without approaching and it walked up to me) and talked to it gently. I'm pretty confident you could have convinced them to jump in the passenger seat with you. Baby deer are as sociable to humans as rabbits can be, and are very loving creatures. I feel sorry for these 2, as they probably didn't last long after he drove away, but such is the way of nature and it's never fair. I can take peace in knowing that they will feed others, and eventually become part of the earth so the other creatures may eat the vegetation that grows there. Death in nature is never fair, but at the same time, it's never in vain.
