I once saw an amateur theatre production of Cats and it was the single most confusing experience of my life. I always put it down to it being a low budget student level production, but given what I've gleaned from the commentary here, maybe they completely nailed it.

So I found this: "The name "Jellicle" comes from an unpublished poem by Eliot entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats", where "Pollicle dogs" is a corruption of "poor little dogs" and "Jellicle cats" of "dear little cats"." Is she seriously telling Grizzabella to _check her privilege?_ That's the ONE CHARACTER you really shouldn't do that with. If it was more "I understand your pain. I was cast out too, but it was before I got a chance to really _know_ what I was losing." you know, is it really better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all? _but nah._ Wow I hope this comment doesn't sound heated! In the Sideways video David recommended they point out that the musical is basically a bunch of cats singing "I am" songs (which are typically villain songs) while one cat- at the climax of the movie sings a sad "I want" song (which is typically the protagonists' song that makes you connect emotionally with the character) and this makes the others (and the audience) realize everyone's being selfish jerks and they all let the sad cat get the coveted prize

I love how they're talking about how Cats has some deeper meaning but it literally doesn't. As an avid Cats fan, I can confirm that Cats is literally just a musical about cats. There's no deeper meaning. Sure, there's a cult that they sacrifice one of their own to every year, but that's just the plot. The "meaning" of Cats is just...cats do things. And that's it.

Mungo Jerry's great song from the _CATS_ is, "In the Summertime." No one is going to get this joke. Also, I've never watched any version of _CATS,_ but I know that it's not only the cats, themselves, that are based on the T.S. Eliot characters from his book of poems, _Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats._ Many or maybe even most of the songs take their lyrics directly from his poems. This is why nothing really makes sense. The poems were meant to stand alone as poems and were certainly not written to be story-songs from a piece of musical theatre.
