They think they look big and bad and scary when they do that....while their humans giggle because of how cute and funny they look.

I think they do this to make predators think a larger is coming after them, then when the predator is on it's heels, the cat can run away easily with a head start from that position. When they actually want to kill something they lower their forward profiles as much as possible then pounce

I think they do this because it makes them look like weird spiders, and everyone respects weird spiders enough to give them unlimited treats. And if they hiss like snakes, well, who wouldn't do whatever hissing spiders wanted. It's nature's way.

Mine did that to Rival Tomcats, they do this to make themselves look as big as possible, trying to make their opponent think that they are much larger than they really are. I only had a few instances where the cats decided to arch on me.

NONE of these cats sustain a crab walk like my cat......she was FEROCIOUS! AND......she would fight you into a bloody pulp if you 'challenged' her by showing one hand in a claw formation at her ---- she would launch herself onto my palm and rip my hand and arm to shreds! All in feline fun. Otherwise, she was a sweet companion, a fierce 'watchdog' with my 3 children, and never, ever scratched or bit any of them. She was the best furry friend I ever had. Lived to be 20 years old, and died in my arms with my kids kissing and loving on her. Her ashes are in a ceramic jar in my room. She lives in my heart always. Monk, you are truly missed, and still loved!
