Most miserable night ever. I know the feeling. Had a similar experience once... I went for a day hike. About 15km. But I started a bit late and it was harder than I expected. It was a lovely, sunny early Spring day. I had a good jacket, a lighter, a pocket knife, a tin of stew, and plenty of water. I was about 10km in when it started getting dark and I realised I didn't bring a torch. I wasn't worried about being lost, I knew where I was, but I was worried about falling off a cliff in the dark, so I decided to camp till morning. It was already dusk, so I didn't have time to build a shelter. I found a spot under a big tree, a sandy bar by the river. It doesn't snow here, but it can get to low single digits in early Spring on clear nights. Cold enough to frost the grass. So I figured the tree would help shelter me from dew. Don't have to worry about bears, either. Except those pesky drop bears. So I built a fireplace, and scraped together enough leaves to make a bed right next to the fire, and gathered enough wood for the night. Ate my stew, and settled in for the night staring at the stars... Except about midnight, it got _really_ cold. I was freezing. So what I did was take one of the large rocks from the fireplace, put it inside my jacket, and curl up around it in foetal position. That kept me warm enough for about half an hour of sleep before I had to wake up to tend the fire and swap rocks. And my feet were icy, so I'd actually stand in the coals to warm up my boots. Anyway, this went on all night. Longest night of my life, ever. Looking at the sky, waiting for the sun to rise, spooning a hot rock... Misadventures are fun... When they're over. :)

My advice for stuffing with cattail fluff is to introduce the entire cattail into the hole of the liner before removing the fluff, then you pull the stick out gently and repeat. Last Spring I was at my camp as usual and next thing I know a _Ruffed Grouse_ shows up. Was interesting. Barely attacks and when it does, it simply lunges at my ankle lightly and jumps back. So this grouse kept showing up every visit. She got to be more friendly as the Spring and Summer when by, but still, if I am walking, she would sometimes do that soft lunge. It felt like she was a friend, which was nice, as I don't have any human friends to go out there with me and hang out. I had 2 or 3 occasions I gave bird seed for her and sometimes I'd take a piece of my crackers and break it into crumbs to give her. I haven't bee up there most of this winter, so not sure how she's been doing. The year before she showed up, in the summer I had a squirrel around every visit that would just keep chattering at me. I loved that! Turned out their home was in a tree next to the shelter I built. I wonder what will show up this upcoming summer?!

That's quite a story. You must have been young! I can't imagine leaving my rifle and coat behind. Glad you made it.
