I have one too and I recently found out what a gem it is, this whole time I thought it was some kind of old buck knife and didn't realize how rare and special it was until I checked it out.

I wish you would have shown us how you shaped the handle.

I am sorry that you didnt show us how to do any of the work. I want to restore an old cattaraugus myself but no idea how to fabricate and install the nails.... how to shape the leather... etc. It would have been great to see that.

I would also like to see how to shape the leather discs. I have one that my Uncle Howard carried in Europe in WWII. He was a medic. The knifes is in good shape but the handles gone.

Beautiful job! Did you epoxy between the discs or are they under compression only? Does epoxy take away from the feel of the leather?

I did, although I don’t think it’s necessary if you are positive that you can get enough compression using the butt end fittings, and if the holes in your leather discs are tight on the tang. Most of the epoxy squeezes out, leaving a very thin layer between the discs. The epoxy was undetectable in the final stage. I soaked the handle in Neatsfoot oil and the leather handle felt amazingly seamless and supple. No ridges or hard edges from the epoxy at all.
