When I had calves, I used the normal diagnostics such as looking for thumping, depressed appearance, etc. But if you have calm calves, such as feeders that were bottle calves previously, a method I also used was to stand still, and then jump a little to spook them. Their response is usually instantaneous. The ones that have a delayed reaction, those are the ones to watch. Useful if you're on the fence about whether a calf is sick.
