As a Storm Spotter i get excited at the prospect of a storm coming in off the Lake, so with the forecast showing storms today I got on the Sea Doo and rode out far on lake Erie to see what i can spot.
Within minutes the calm waters were changed into rough waters.

Careful on Erie.. it can change incredibly fast..15-30 foot waves/swells can happen.. it’s a dangerous lake

I once was out fishing on a much, much , much smaller lake on a small Jon boat. I knew a storm was coming, but was fishing. I got caught out on the water. High wind and lightning. I was able to get the boat ashore and we got under a shelter house. That wasn’t dumb, that was stupid and dangerous. I will never do that again. I am glad you were safe. Scary stuff man, don’t push your luck and get your ticket punched

I have lived on the other side of the lake for 55 years and it can build trecherous waves quick. If you see lightning strikes, get off the lake ASAP.

Lake Erie is the shallowest of the 5 great lakes and gets huge waves because of that during storms. Getting caught on a boat during thunderstorm on lake Erie can be terrifying. Happened to me once around midnight while fishing for Walleye near Buffalo NY. the lake was flat and within no time we had 3 to 5 foot waves. Pretty scary when your on a 12 foot fishing boat and we had to travel back to the dock 2 miles away in the dark. On top of that I called the local TV News weather report on the phone and there was a SPECIAL MARINE WARNING for the Lake Erie near Buffalo NY. Good Memory now because that we made it back without getting hit by lightning or capsize the boat.

If I recall on this particular day there was no warnings issued on the Canadian side but there was one issued on the US side around the time i was riding back.

I've got a similar machine! Adjust your handle bars up and stand! you'll have so much more control and reaction speed as well as ability to lean the machine away from waves coming over/dodge the spray a bit and save your back from impacts if you hop a wave or two

When you make it back to shore by the grace of god with you bung puckered so tight you can't unpucker for a bit you'll never mess with the weather again

Why is that? Less noisy than a power boat, racing boat and most speed boats
@cottonj9
@cottonj9 27 күн бұрын
Absolutely. The noise is on thing but the hazards they produce for real boaters are significant especially when they operate in packs. There should be significantly more controls on where and when they can be operated. There are many area where they should be prohibited altogether.

Thanks William. There is of course risk in everything we do daily, but I always take into account where I'm going, notify others, check wind direction etc. If this was an offshore wind, I wouldn't of done it. The wind was pushing me back towards land.

No offense, but I think your main belt is slipping a little. A jet ski, in a storm, on Lake Erie? Well, it's your life.
@rickss69
@rickss69 14 күн бұрын
Actually, a jet ski is far safer than most boats. They will not sink unless you allow one of the seats or hatches to open. In the event of a roll over you can easily right it...not possible with any boat.

yes i have, but you have to put faith in your machine and yourself. always have a back up plan. When out on my own i always inform the family where i intend to be and i frequently text (hourly). Also have a VHF radio, whistle etc and on this day, this winds would of pushed me ashore. Buddy system for sure for new riders.

You always inform somebody where you intend to be so they can find your body if disaster strikes? I think your machine is pretty new so right now it's pretty dependable but one of these days your going to find yourself in an undesirable situation. Let's hope your machine warns you ahead of time and you heed that warning.

I have been asked that so many times. On this particular ride. I was travelling exactly the same speed as the wind behind me. Other than that, there is a point where if you just tilt your head back ever so slightly, it goes. You quickly learn that the wind pushed down on the peak until you look slightly up
