CAUGHT in Lake Erie Storm - Huge Waves

The weather report was calling for 2 Foot or Less. Goes to show how fast a storm can amp up the waves on Lake Erie! Changed to 8-12 foot waves in an hour. There were occasional bigger waves mixed in as the wave buoy recorded a 19 footer while we were out there!

Been there on Erie…..going out on charter boat…..we were holding on for actual lives….and finally the captain figured out we should head back and we did. Erie is a motherfucker and I’ve been caught with no land in sight in a 17’ with trolling motor….and it was up and down to the bottom of the trough with 360 deg of water walls around you,,,,,of course it was our fault….but we easily could have died that day…I would not call them 10’, just persisitent 8’ and that was way more than enough for one lifetime,

I had a 50C (55ft) Sportfisherman in Lake Michigan.. 8-10 foot waves would bust spray over 20ft high over the flybridge radar arch in 30knt winds... I don't see many whitecaps on those waves, probably waves from other boats. My wife and I would go out on 6-8 seas nobody else would be out there. We had Lake Michigan all to ourselves!!😊

I doubt that they were that big. The data you held to the screen were either from someplace else, or they were from the Rocky River Buoy. The Rocky River Buoy data matches your data well if the wave height were given in inches, not feet. That being said, the waves grew a lot bigger during the next hour after that at Rocky River, the largest waves there may have grown to 3-4 feet. Your waves were probably bigger because you were much further out from shore with a longer fetch then that Buoy. The 45005 Buoy further out in the lake might have been more representative of your conditions. The largest waves there approached 6 feet. What stands out is how fast the waves grew...they doubled in height in just an hour or so. The winds were surprisingly strong for about an hour around 4 PM and were almost a gale. This is particularly surprising considering that the water temperatures were several degrees cooler than the air temperatures. I have no idea what caused that brief windstorm but suspect it was a far-downstream effect of thunderstorm clusters in the hours before you were hit. A 5-6 foot wave whipped by a 30 knot near-gale is nasty and steep, and likely to undergo localized breaking or white capping. It would be a force to be reckoned with. That was a nasty wind storm out there and I would not have anticipated it in those conditions. Those were definitely rough conditions.

Been out in 18 tri haul and running in the swell were you couldn't see nothing but wave and sky and we jump would jump wave to wave till the boat split and we had to go in with pumps running and had to keep the boat running and back the trailer in the water and drove it on the trailer and it was fun but my buddys father wasn't to happy over splitting his boat in half but he had it fix 😂

Honestly people on here cannot judge the wave height by a video. Waves are usually bigger than what you think it is on video. Erie is no joke when it gets rough out there. I would say 6-8 foot but again I cannot honestly judge by this video footage. Good size boat they had also. Been out in a 16.5 foot boat in 3-5's These are bigger than those were.

I didn’t see waves higher than your cabin. Waves could be 20 feet and not a problem, depending on the period of the waves.

Last year I bought a Hewescraft Alaska, previous boat had a cuddy cabin and was much taller. In the Hewescraft, all waves feel much higher. It’s a bit unnerving. Also I don’t like how the Hewescraft aft deck isn’t self-bailing. I installed a Rule 3700 and might install an additional big bulge pump. If the aft deck takes on water (is pooped,) I want that water out quick.

@@wldproductions Yep. I am planning on checking the foam yearly, since my boat will be moored most of the year. Soggy foam will cause corrosion and might not provide sufficient floatation.
