In this video 'Iowa Fruit Guy' Randall Vos gives us an up-close look at some sticky traps in the greenhouse. Despite being familiar to greenhouse growers, some overlook their usage due to uncertainty about interpreting the information these traps provide. These adhesive traps capture both pests and beneficial insects. Specifically, they attract and ensnare pests like winged aphids, whiteflies, thrips, leafminers, fungus gnats, and shore flies. Occasionally, beneficial insects such as the whitefly parasitoid, Encarsia formosa, may also be trapped. While various other species may be present, most pose no threat to greenhouse operations. The key challenge lies in identifying the problematic insects amidst the captured diversity.
In this video Randall shows us some fungus gnats and explains how they differ from another pest known as the shore fly.
