For me, saying "I convinced my parents to let me" sounds like more proper English than "I got my parents to let me." I know "I got" is grammatically correct.

How can a non finite verb be the main verb?

This is a great question. As a rule, students are taught that non-finite verbs cannot be main verbs since they don't show tense. However, in the causative structure, the causative verb (made, have, let) is finite. It can be in any tense. When this verb transfers its action to the object/agent, then the second verb is non-finite and does not show tense. I know this is confusing because it contradicts what you've probably learned.
