As the virus from China has forced most of us to change our daily lives significantly, I took to social distancing in the AutoGyro Cavalon 915iS to rejuvenate my spirit after feeling down about it all. A few minutes of air time in a gyroplane goes a very long way! Bliss. - Robert Lutz

Hi Robert, nice video and glad that a bit of flying helped you during quarantine! I'm pleased to say that the UK CAA have said we can go leisure flying again but as aircraft has just gone through permit inspection it needs a check flight but should be back flying soon! I noticed from your Instagram that you attended the IAPGT Instructor's course last fall with Phil Harwood who is my CFI as I'm based at the Gyrocopter Experience HQ in York. Nice to see that you follow the IAPGT techniques, especially the 4 stage takeoff and coming to a full stop after landing before taxiing. Look forward to seeing more of your Cavalon in the months to come!

Thanks Jason. Solo flight (which I don't do often) is so much fun in gyro. Get back in the air sooner then later, I'm sure the weather is getting good by you as well! You have a fantastic instructor. Phil is a great mentor with the best demeanor and promotes fantastic insights for his many students (like myself) across the globe. I really like the wide availability to learn best practices that Phil and the IAPGT continually assess and reassess. It's what gyro flying has been missing for many years. The 4 stage takeoff technique is so useful to reduce take off errors. I find it a little more difficult, especially when filming a high performance takeoff, to speak through the steps as quickly as it happens though as you can see in the video. Everyone I fly with gets this method ingrained in them. Thanks for the feedback on the video!

Hey, great video, thanks for that. I was just wondering, I'm in Canada on the east coast where we're basically at sea level. I'm often in Alberta just alongside the foothills of the Rockys. Take off and landing at sea level (east) or elevation (west), would it have an impact on performance? I know turbos handle elevation better but would that be factor in a gyro? Where would you suggest would be the easier place to learn if elevation is even a factor?
@gyrorevolution5249
@gyrorevolution5249 4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Density altitude has a strong affect on aircraft performance. Wings (rotorwings too) have to operate at either higher angles of attack (fixed wing) or higher rotor speed (gyroplanes) to produce the same amount of lift at higher elevations/altitude. Engines when normally aspirated (non-turbocharged) produce less power as altitude increases. For those who operate gyroplanes from 4,000' elevations and higher we highly recommend either the turbo 914 or turbo 915 rotax engines. If you are primarily operating from high altitude airports and you have a fixed pitch prop it should be ground adjusted to be more coarse than when operating at sea level. If operations are varied from sea level to high altitude airports and cruise levels, then a constant speed propeller is strongly recommended for optimal performance and proper utilization of of the engine. Keep in mind that in the USA those operating under "Sport Pilot" privileges are restricted to using fixed pitch props. In Canada I'm not familiar if this is a limitation or if Canadians even have the equivalent of the FAA Sport Pilot certification.

So cool. I once was against gyros and motorized hang gliders. But since Ive seen a closed cabin gyro a couple of years ago, It really keeps me thinking if I might just get one. Its cost efficient, there might be some room for upgrades engine and equipment wise ( I mean, IFR would be seriously cool) and on top of it, are that the hangar costs are half as high as for a light sport fixed wing. Plus a certain level of luxury, because the interior is often way better as in comparable light aircraft. I am soooooo tempted. Although I must admit I would love to buy a Piper Cup or, something fully IFR equipped like a Bonanza... But arrgghhh it is so unreasonable XD Anyways, fly safe!

Gyro's have come a long ways in many areas, most importantly, safety! You're spot on. The level of power, efficiency and caliber of avionics make them very competitive to other forms of recreational flight.

@gyrorevolution5249

The balancing string give you a visual indication of the airflow over the aircraft. Ideally you want it straight so equal parts go over the left and right side of the aircraft. This minimizes drag and maximizes performance and economy. It's a simple device that never lies! In airplanes (with front mounted engine) you typically use an inclinometer because prop wash over the windshield creates turbulent flow. You'll see balance strings utilized on gyroplanes, helicopters, gliders, and possibly pusher engine mounted airplanes.

I don't remember the winds exactly but from looking at the wind sock ~ 10KT gust 17KT around... The winds aloft were quite strong, maybe 40knots + I do recall. Fun fun day to fly! Headwind have a more pronounced affect on gyros because of their already very slow touchdown and lift off speeds.

You mentioned 115 kts ground speed there... I guess that was downwind. What's a typical cruise airspeed?
@gyrorevolution5249
@gyrorevolution5249 4 жыл бұрын
Typically 60 to 90 KIAS. Vne is 104. When I'm by myself I can fly upwards of 95-100, but generally it's most comfortable between 60 to 90 KIAS.
@betmen1
@betmen1 4 жыл бұрын
@@gyrorevolution5249 that's quite a range. The PA28 and C172 I flown would be only a few knots up or down from 100 at any time. I guess with gyros this is due to weight having more impact on the performance?
@gyrorevolution5249
@gyrorevolution5249 4 жыл бұрын
@@betmen1 The range I give is the range at which the aircraft feels comfortable flying. Having the ability to cruise between 50 - 90 KIAS gives you the ability to sight see when you want to, and get some place when you need to. The classic Piper / Cessna trainers can be flown fairly slow, but not comfortably, the visibility over the nose becomes non existent, the amount of right rudder required large, and the flight controls mushy. Weight does have significant affects. Solo flight with 1/3 tank of fuel... hold on, the performance is mind blowing (I've never had so much fun flying the traffic pattern)!
@betmen1

@@gyrorevolution5249 😃😃 cool, thanks for the insight... I planned to convert to gyro from the plank flying, but this Covid BS had put my plans on hold. The reason I wanted to pick your brain was to get the real figures and opinion, not only manufacturer's marketing propaganda... Everything about gyros just fit my bill, it's just the cruise speed that's a bit questionable... 90 kts at best doesn't sound very promising for cross country around Europe..
