Guys who do not believe in bedding have never seen a benchrest rifle. Most of those actions are glued in, and for a reason.

I believe in bedding. But many ol hard heads are refusing to realize the advances in chassis options. My shop has set record both with bedded and chassis style rifles

I bought an old Sako L579 from a retired Marine many years ago chambered in 243 Ackley. He gave me 20 years of load data he collected for it. I spent another 20 years trying loads for it. Shot the barrel out of it. Never found a better bullet for it than a Speer 75 grain HP with a flat base. Part #1205. The BC is probably the same as one of those plastic Easter eggs but it shoots 3/8” at 100y and it will turn a ground squirrel into prairie salsa at 450y. 4350. BR-2 primers.

I built a 22 creedmoor this winter. It's a savage model 11. I tried to get by without putting a different stock on it. It shot pretty good. I could get 3 touching with 2 fliers sometimes 2 touching with 3 fliers. Decided to bite the bullet and put a Boyd's stock on it. Didn't think I was doing the Shilen barrel justice. Bedded it yesterday morning. Just took it out and cleaned it up. Gonna wait a couple days and take it back to the range. CAN'T WAIT!!

Great video cavedweller. You are absolutely right. Glass bedding is number 1. You have to have that proper foundation to your rifles accuracy and proper glass bedding is it. That is the only way you will have consistency. You and I know that. However, seating depth is not as critical as you let on. You can adjust your rifle's accuracy/precision with the charge weight as well. Which you know. It's finding the right node. Powders play a huge part in rifle accuracy. Temp sensitivity and also how big that node is. If you use a temp sensitive powder and are loading on the edge of a good node at low temps, you may fall completely out of that node when the temps rise. All things that needs to be considered. But seating depth is not as critical as you think. Just load at an arbitrary .020" off the lands and find OCW with a good powder and usually you are golden. Shoot 5 shot groups at a minimum and the groups will tell you if you need to be off the lands more as well. Those 2 in 3 out or double grouping, as some of us call it, will tell you that you are too close to the lands. Group dispersion is key to diagnosing your load and seating depth. You can't see that with 3 shot groups, and the chrono is not going to tell you. That's where your statement about the "paper never lies" comes into play. It sure does, but some guys don't understand how to read it. Keep doing what you are doing, you got that bedding stuff down pat. That is starting at the start for sure.

I've got a Savage Model 11 heavy barrel in 243 Winchester in the factory plastic stock. I put a Nikon Monarch scope on it and have been running 100 grain bulk Factory second bullets from Midway USA. It will regularly shoot a 1-inch group at 300 yards if I can do my part! I want to upgrade the stock and glass bed it, but I don't want to touch it either. Sometimes things just come together!

CD glad to see this in 243. I dont have any of the 75gr vmax. I shoot groundhogs in the 10lb range using tge 87gr vmaxs and what i have of Walts' last run for me of the 90gr HPBT MEFs. Those will run an inch group at 300yds. I will agree 100% on the bedding and the gap to the lands. Some rifles i even bed part of the barrel. I bed ALL my rifles. I have some 70 btips but too pricey for me. I have a bunch of 87gr hpbt, 80gr btips, 80gr blitzes and some 85 gr Speer spbt. I am going to have to give them 75s a try. I like the lighter bullets. If you ever would be interested in high velocity 243 caliber that would a low volume rifle let me know. I have a 6mm BCC reamer, it is a maxed AI 270 necked down to 243. It will split a 10 lb ground hog in half with a 70gr btip. Thanks again CD.

Nice vid as always sir, still think 0.010” is too much. I do very little benchrest, but the bench rest boys seem to be of the belief that nodes are every 0.006”, so testing at 0.010” are you missing some, if not some definitely the wide nodes. Proud to be on your Patreon sir, you do a good job. Hi again, Wales, U.K.

Kinda along the lines of c.o.l. , do you try to keep one caliber dimension in the case neck ? My 22-250 has a rather long throat and with some bullet's there isn't any chance of loading very close to the lands . Somebody from decades ago when I first got started into reloading gave me that information of keeping at least one caliber in the neck , ,, got you on patreon, really enjoy your content RV

@@cavedweller1959 Thank you sir. Currently doing a little research on the 243 and most rifles to be offered in 1-7/8. Prs using 105gr+ appears to be the ticket. Not many variations with a text box twist for the 58-70gr bullets. But it appears to sling em out there pretty good tho

Just started reloading. So nervous on how to start my load development. I’ve been watching Eric Cortina but I’m still nervous haha.
@cavedweller1959
@cavedweller1959 5 ай бұрын
If your just gettin started, Cortina is probably not your best source of info. Every thing the F class shooters use is custom built for their specific use. Not so for the guns from the corner gun shop. Buy a good reloading manual & read the first 50 pages 2 or 3 times over. Hornady's is excellent, and it need not be the latest version. If there is still something you don't understand, read it 2 or 3 more times. That will be, by far, your best intro to reloading.

Cavedweller, you are good . But I need your honest opinion. I don't have much capital but I am hoping you could help me out by letting know what rifle I could get for 4oo to 5oo dollars in 204 ruger. I would not be shooting any farther than 200 yards at ground squirrels
