+j boilard Agricola's okay. Prefer Caverna as it's just a little cleaner playing and (I think) a little easier for new players. There is more stuff RIGHT at the beginning but I would actually argue that once you get going it's an easier game to play. It's just so much easier to feed that there's not the same level of new player frustration. If your looking for a solid euro farming game have you tried Scoville? A little different mechanically but I've found it a big hit with players that see Caverna and are a little intimidated.

I might actually like this one better if not for the theme. I like the integration of the abilities and the rooms, and the greater ability to select a different path to victory. Also I really like change in components, tiles over cards. But Farming as a theme is more engaging to me. Thanks for the Runthrough, it helps me decide on which one to get!

Looks great, only thing that worries me is the lack of occupation cards. That always made the games of Agricola highly replayable (if not always balanced, Lover I'm looking at you!). Our favorite way of playing was 3-4 player Farmers of the Moor, mixing in several card sets, drafting both occs and minor improvements.

I am thinking about buying either Caverna or The Colonists. My friends like playing epic games, but for now, regarding prices, I am more into Caverna. It will be our first 'peaceful' game where there is no need to hurry to save the castle or think about how to spoil the other player's paradises. But I do like the way The Colonists develops the more you play. So will it still stay desirable having got Caverna on the shelf?

Hey Rahdo, nice videos! I really like they you explain/runthorugh the games. I have a doubt. In 16:50, you consider "Ore Mining" because you gain 3 ores + 2 ore since you have a Ore Mine. But The Ore Mine you got on this same turn. You really can do that?
@famaral42
@famaral42 6 жыл бұрын
and at 28:58 you could get 3 items in adventure. You first get a stone to use it to furnish. Is that possible?
@PauloRenato23
@PauloRenato23 6 жыл бұрын
regarding the Ore Mine, why do you think he couldn't use the Mine? He built it in the first action and he said then that "From now on" when he mines for Ore he gets +2... and it makes perfect sense that it would work that way
@PauloRenato23
@PauloRenato23 6 жыл бұрын
Regarding the 28:58 question... it's possible, you receive the Expedition loot in the order you want, so he can get 1 stone, then he can use it to furnish... etc... do the rules say anywhere that you can't use things in the Round you acquire them? Also, this video is almost 4 years old, if that was done wrong it was a safe bet that it would have been noted already :)

I have not played Agricola and have only dabbled in Caverna. My wife does not like games with big learning curves and so im looking more at Caverna as a good choice. I hear what your saying about the "heart of Agricola strategy' being cut from Caverna. So what would your thoughts be on a Caverna optional set up; Instead of placing all the furnishing tiles on the board available to everyone you would randomly deal out all tiles evenly to all players. All players keep the delt tiles secret and are the players personal store of furnishing tiles to use during play. Long term strategy can be built from those tiles.
@rahdo
@rahdo 9 жыл бұрын
Joseph Garcia honestly i can't say. i've already traded the game away. but if i did still have it and i had the time to test variants, i think i'd go with 1) using the sides of the tile boards that hold fewer tiles and 2) randomly choose which special tiles will appear in eveyr game, so the setup is always a bit different
@jonofpdx
@jonofpdx 8 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Garcia Or just wait a bit. I would guess that Caverna's first expansion will address this as it is the most common complaint. Beyond that, though, you can try randomly dealing a couple tiles to each player and allowing them to start with one of them (returning the other to the board) + one animal and veg of their choice. Allows for some early direction as people try to get resources to work with their starting tile/get animals to start breeding. It further trivializes the food struggle, though.

It seems like every time you play this game, you can stick with your favored strategy, or basically the strategy that worked each game before it, and that there is therefore little variety in gameplay; in other words, that playing a full game one day could play very similarly to how it plays on another day. Is that the case? The same could be said of Orleans, that you have a favorite strategy that you like to pursue each and every game, but that often doesn't work out because of the randomness of blindly drawing people from a bag, which limits what you can do and what strategy you can follow. Caverna looks fun, but that's the one thing that worries me, that it can always play the same way each time. Is that the case?

Actually i think there´s an error at 12:43, you can´t do the first action unless you can make the second, otherwise you only do the second, just like it´s explained by FAQ in Agricola´s manual PS: i know this is an old vid but if this is my first time watching maybe there´s more ppl like me, and you could advise that this move is against the rules =(

Rahdo, hello again!!! I think, just like agricola went through some expansions, caverna will have some kind, perhaps an entire copy dedicated to Occupations and some other tweaks.. If that ever happened, would your opinion towards the game, as in comparison to agricola, change? Nice job mate!!! i just got this game and really want to play it. I heard so many mixed opinions about Agricola that i was afraid to buy.. but last year the released an IOS App(which won best app board game of the year) and i bought... wow i was amazed to play such an intricate mechanics with the theme, and the struggle to survive the hard times... Brilliant, and i agree with you, the occupations and vital to keep the game fresh, and very very tactical, i dont know how Caverna handles this, but if the player doesnt have a variability (beyond the randomness of the rounds cards) it can get very much strategic...WHat do you think?
@rahdo
@rahdo 10 жыл бұрын
i'd say they're both strategic games... caverna just has 3x the number of major improvements (which are always the same) and agricola has the occupations & minor improvements.i'm sure caverna will get expansions, definitely, and that will probably help significantly with the variable setup. only question is, will I still own caverna by that point? answer is, I don't know... :)

Hi Glauco! I saw one of your older posts about looking for solo games and was wondering what you came up with. What are your favorite solo games? I'm a solo gamer too and thought we could share our experiences!
@GlaucoTabet
@GlaucoTabet 9 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian, thanks for replying! I'm very glad to share and trade my experience with you. Im not a long time board game player. Been in the "field" for 2 years only, in Brazil things are getting hotter now, with many games being published round here. My favourites solo are LOTR LCG, i love deck building games and LOTR theme... so it is very easy to love this game. Through the years the game got better and better, with excellent quests and really good alternatives for deck themes and etc. Mage Knight board game is excellent, really hard to master... i've spent hours doing the solo conquest. once i played standing up through an entire game that lasted 4 nd a half hours... i was totally sucked into it and didn't notice the hours flying.. Agricola for IOS has gotten into me, i really like it. Other games i would mention are Nations, works really well for solo. Robinson Crusoe is a very good adventure game, really hard solo mode. Legendary is good, but to be fair, i like with more than 4 people. I will think about it a little more, but those are the things that usually hit my table. I also play a lot of video games when im alone. I don't have a preferred media :). What about you?
@bbblackwell
@bbblackwell 9 жыл бұрын
Glauco Tabet Lima Ah, good to hear from you, Glauco! I play video games across multiple platforms too -- PC, emulators, PS3, 3DS. I've played phone and tablet games but they tend to disappoint over time. I don't have IOS so I miss most of the board game apps. LOTR LCG is a favorite, though I'm working through it slowly in order of release (on Khazad-Dum now). I'm thinking of picking up the Hobbit saga. Mage Knight has a unique feel that I enjoy, but it doesn't get much play because I don't have the necessary block of time and I can't leave it set up overnight (kids will eat it for breakfast). Same with Arkham Horror, though I really like the mood that game creates. Haven't played Crusoe; seems like it would be another big, long game that I'd have to quit before finishing; how long does it take you to play? I have Friday, though, and it's a good game to bring with you on a trip if you can't pack big games. Adventure of D is another one that serves that purpose, and I also have the Ascension 2-player apprentice set that you can play solo using the "Nemesis" rules. My favorites right now are Shadowrun Crossfire, Marvel Legendary, and Legends of Andor. All of the co-ops I play using 2 players, but with Crossfire I will even play 3 or 4 -- it's very easy to manage. That's probably my favorite game right now. Barbarian Prince is a free print and play solo game that gives a great experience, if you're not scared off by the fact that it's an old school storytelling pencil-and-paper tabletop that refers often to charts and tables. What games are you considering next?

Sure Agricola has ton of different card options, but feel the cave options are pretty plentiful as well, and like Agricola's cards, they likely will come out with more if game sells well enough. Personally like Caverna more, for one because I don't like the fact that getting a lucky card draw can give you such a huge advantage in Agricola. Another reason is don't like the have to do everything at least a little part of Agricola as much as the open feel of Caverna.
@rahdo
@rahdo 10 жыл бұрын
in our experience, there's no such thing as a lucky draw letting you win in agricola, because we play with the draw 10, keep 7 rule (as mentioned in the rulebook). since in an average game you're only got to get to play 4 or 5 cards, the draw 10/keep 7 pretty much guarantees everyone's going to have a fighting chance. the "agricola requires you to do everything" is a myth, btw. i posted at length about it here: www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/1w7bhb/what_are_your_thoughts_on_the_meta_game_of/cezdnv8

Its actually a combination of La Havre and Agricola. The main complaint with Agricola that players had was the amount of moves wasted on food and how tough it was to get it. That was fixed as was half a dozen of other pain points. That's why many call it Agricola 2.0. You could say that about countless other games. Cards against humanity is apples to apples with an adult theme or dixit is apples to apples with pictures, Thunderstone is basically dominion with a few enhancements, Shogun is basically wallenstein. Eldritch horror is basically Arkham horror with streamlined mechanics, etc, etc....
