Series premiere
The Debaters
When and where: 9: 30 p.m. Wednesdays, CBC
Never having done the "filmed before a live studio audience" thing before, the promise of something new is enough of a lure to get me into the subterranean CBC Vancouver production centre on a balmy afternoon.
The occasion is a taping of the new CBC series The Debaters - new to television, but a popular draw on CBC radio for the past five years, which explains why the mother corp has no trouble filling several hundred seats with willing fans on a Friday in April. The transition from televison to radio has left the show's premise intact - two comedians square off on a topic, aiming to score in laughs and logic, moderated by host Steve Patterson. You kind of wish these guys could have been giving tips to Ignatieff and Harper during the last federal election debates.
[...]
"The Debaters takes stand-up to a new level," Side says later, adding that while most comedians deliver sets solo, in the show they spar and riff off another comic.
The comics tackle topics from "Adult children living at home," to "Is it OK to cheat on your spouse?" to "Urban chickens" to "Showers vs. baths." The show gets semi-serious with takes on "The Rise of China," "Scientology," "Walmart," "Is it time to scrap the pride parade?," and "Suzuki or Cherry: Who is the better role model?"

Just so everyone realizes this it is a comedy show here in Canada. It is done all on the fly. They do not know what category they will be debating or what side they will debate for.

I doubt that, they must know in advance to allow some light research, but this isn't a formal debate and they're comedians so the only real facts you'll hear are the ones that they can twist into a joke.

I live well south of the 49th parallel, but I am a big fan of this show. I figure that they know what the topic is, but that's it. I figure that they don't even know if they are pro or con until Steve Patterson tells them and after that, some very witty improv. I think so far, Derek Seguin is one of my favorites. I also really like Laurie Elliot.

Wrong on both counts as far as I know. How do I know? I remember an episode where one comedian arrived for the taping thinking he was arguing one side when he had actually been selected for the opposing argument. Since both comedians had prepared for the same thing, the producers had them both argue the same point. And it was still funnier than this episode.

the opening was scripted, they had 2 minutes that were defintely scrippted but the bare knuckle round was definitely improv as was the next firing round

How can all of this just come about by chance? Even just study a dung beetle. Thirst. Love. Dna. Eyeball. Emotions. Apes don't look in the mirror and ask why? I'm only scratching the surface here I studied religion and science. Everything that we know of had a designer or Creator from the cheap toaster at Walmart to the builder of our home. So would it not make sense that everything on our Earth all the birds even how they can make all their little singing sounds and communications with each other how a monarch butterfly can find its way all the way back to where it's earlier generations began in Mexico. How does it know how to do that? Why do we have sense of smell? How do we have so many different variations of foods that you and I enjoy? How do we have the perfect amount of 78% nitrogen in our atmosphere sowe can breathe just the "precise" amount of oxygen continually and not die? If Earth were 5% closer to the Sun or 5% further life would be uninhabitable.. how about the precise axis that the Earth's it's on to give us all the perfect seasons that are beautiful to enjoy. I mean there's so much more! There's got to be a designer and creator don't you think? I find many people I've talked to who are atheist like the idea that they don't have to have any moral compass and they can live whatever like they want with no answer to God so they can do whatever they want but in the end it only leads to major problems in their lives. The scriptures have clearly shown for thousands of years that God's principles in the Bible are protection for us since he knows what's best for us he created us he knows our genetic makeup and what we need to be happy and successful. Go to JW org for satisfying answers to life's big questions in over a thousand languages more than any other website in the world.

If any of these fools attended a worship service @ Satan's church they'd walk out of there with soiled pants saying, "Whoa! WTF?" That's where John McLain shines his light into this moral darkness: "Welcome to the party pal!"

@mollie2810 I like this, but its definitely lacking the abusive stuff. At least it sort of demonstrates how the general public perceive $cientology... which helps us with making strategies. Personally, I don't care whether people don't join $cientology because they know it's abusive or because they think it's whacky, or both. Both is a win. Hi, btw... long time, no see. :)

@Davidr8999 Compared to scientology itself. That amounts to approximately 1 / 50,000,000 of the hours wasted by scientology members. That is an extremely conservative estimate of 10hrs each and approx 10 Million members...WATCH THIS VIDEO.

The Asian guy sucked so hard at debating. To be fair, neither of them knew anything about the church other than what they've heard in the media. Focusing on what the church doesn't do in comparison to an extremist Christian? I could still win that fight. I could point out that Scientology's extremists are far worse and more harmful than the Westboro Baptist Church.

Sad... Even the good old CBC manages to slip in some anti-Christian propaganda... I feel bad for the atheist guy- he is obviously rebelling like a child against something... Like he got hurt or something- he's just so angry, you can see it. Well, they all are, I guess... But he is very zealous about his religion, I'll give him that!

Atheism isn't a religion anymore than not believing in Santa is a belief. And how was he using anti-Christian propaganda? Closest I saw was when he quoted the Bible about Leviticus. If you think quoting the bible is anti-christian, you might need to reassess your belief system..
