The CBR1100XX Super Blackbird is truly an awesome bike. One of the technological advances they rolled out here was the infamous CBS or combined braking system.
Applying the front brake mechanically activates the two outer rear caliper pistons, and vice versa, applying the rear activates the front brakes partially.
Soon after purchasing this my rear caliper suffered a catastrophic failure.
This video shows how it works and what you need to keep in mind if you are looking to overhaul or repair the system.

I picked up one of these (I also had one with 115k miles years ago) recently and having similar issues with rear brake. The CBS is persnickety. My rear caliper locks if I press the rear pedal but it also slowly begins biting as it heats up...and it's actually not easy to tell it's a problem unless you were very carefully checking it about every mile. The bird is powerful enough that you don't notice it griping. Only at slow speeds o when stopped can you tell... It can also destroy your wheel bearing back there and blow the tire from heat.. I'm about to go through all my brakes.. this bird sat for about a decade or so.. And yes, btw, these are my favorite motorcycle. I've ridden many but the blackbird is really special

Agreed, I have had many, but the XX is a different kind of beast! My rear caliper totally melted, still have it as a paperweight! Deffo flush it, and flush it well, then do it one more time. While I am sure you know, cleaning the return hole on the slave on the front fork is crucial - I used a wire brush bristle and hey presto! Will do a short video of what I used as reference as others asked, and hope it helps. Thanks for stopping by and good luck matey!

@@nikchristides4895 I really appreciate your video. A picture is worth a thousand words but your video on this particular issue is worth more. I am currently in a strange place and without a manual but your video alone is EXACTLY what I needed to see to help me through this procedure.

@@nikchristides4895 question for you -i currently have the secondary master right here in my hand. How do you back the little filter out? Mine is stuck in the hole. I've tried pumping the actuator to create pressure to see if it would pop out. Nothing yet. Thanks

@@Guy-ky9mc from memory, I did the work on the bench, and used the tiniest flat head and toothpick to avoid damaging the soft plastic. Disconnect the whole thing and look for something flat to pry them apart. I think there is a small opening one of my watchmakers flat heads got in and I still gouged/deformed it a little 😬

I sincerely appreciate that! I will also try to video the two pages I used to clean the return valve on the front LHS fork slave (which activates the rear) , but .. drowning in bringing an RF900R to life

Hello, great video…, I too had this exact thing happen.. however my combined brakes were deleted before I bought it and they had worked ok for a couple of seasons. I had just changed all pads front and rear, did not bleed brakes.. thinking I didn’t need to however within 15 miles realized rear brakes were sticking severely and completely wore out a new set.., also partially having some caliper melt and distortion..! First question- we’re can I find a replacement caliper, I’m in the USA..? Have had no luck.. Secondly, is it safe to use the caliper I have as I planned on replacing all seals…? Thank you, Keith

Hey Keith, our symptoms where the same. My caliper was so badly melted, it had the shape of the hub - like melted cheese - mine is now in the yard getting rusty as a conversation piece. I did not even try salvaging it! My recommendation would be to join one or two Facebook XX groups. There is a gentleman called Paul Manners, he is collecting parts, renewing and selling and think it's your best bet. The other idea would be ebay or something similar, to find someone dismantling Blackbirds. Join the FB group. There is some noise as always in FB, but nice group to be part of. Finally me personal theorem - the jobs we hate doing (like bleeding/fitting tyres etc) are the jobs we end up doing so many times we become experts 😆 Good luck, message again if stuck.

El freno trasero de mi cbr 1100 se bloqueó ayer. Pero hace solo un año cambie el líquido por completo y le hice un correcto purgado. ¿Puede ser fallo del cilindro maestro secundario?

You are saying having air in the system caused the caliper to melt???

No. Having a poorly maintained (unflushed) combined brake system meant the debris did not allow the secondary located on the left front fork to release the pressure from the rear I would only recommend home mechanic to fix if you understand how the CBS works

I do not; but have a short video with a photo of what to expect when you take it apart. Recently did the job again - video was impossible due to the amount of brake fluid that goes everywhere 😩. Having done this so many times, disassemble the secondary master at the front fork (do drain the brake fluid first) liberally clean in a tub of brake fluid and consider a repair kit.

Drain fluid completely Crack the 3 torx screws Undo the nut holding the master in place (only one) Remove, gently remove rubber boot (mine tore hence needed new kit) Clean or rebuild.

One last thing. The two 10mm on the master hide the filter. Undo those, and even if you don't fully dismantle you'll see the dirt covering the return hole

Depends on what oil you mean. If bleeding, brake fluid yes. Engine oil should have no bearing with the brakes. If it does something went wrong somewhere!
