I agree, started carrying a 3 1/2lbs Kelly Perfect axe hanged on a 28" Whiskey River handle, and it friggin rips, makes short work when gathering firewood for the camp.

People always laughed at me because I carried a 75 yr old 3 and a half pound axe on my backpack until we had to cut large downed trees and then they always asked to barrow my axe. When hiking I never cared about ounces or a couple of more pounds. I'm strong enough to carry it. I'm like you that the smaller axe's just don't do it for me. Glad to see your ok. I was born with a medical condition. It's a growth between my legs the doctors call it a nuttsack and because of that I pack whatever the hell I want in the woods. My long term Bug Out Bag is about 60lbs and has a Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe strapped on the side. 60lbs is nothing with my pack since it is built to carry loads double the weight. I have done 80lbs and it was ok, but 60lbs I can do all day long no issues, done it a million times. My wife carries the Gransfors Bruk Small Forest Axe on her pack. Nutnfancy has the perfect phrase coined for this Firepower vs. Mobility

I agree with you about Hatchets, to me they serve no purpose. Where I live in Canada, especially Northern Ontario a hatchet is useless. I'd rather carry a good axe and saw.

I like the carpenter's axe the best with the thin, straight cutting edge, but I use the Silky Saw the best for felling.

I like hatchets/tomahawks, but i have a hand issue from an old injury and that makes chopping with them an issue with the impact of chopping, big knives are definitely a lot more comfortable, especially knives like the kbar kukri or the spec plus line with those rubber handles, plus the accuracy of batoning which is just more efficient, plus the versatility of knives over an axe.

I'm with ya on the uselessness of a hatchet (SFA is a long handled hatchet). For the effort and weight of an axe, I would only use it for splitting ( Fiskars X25 @ $70 FTW!). It's heavy, so I'll walk a little slower. Falling and bucking, it's my Bigboy or Katanaboy 500 all day!

When I was in middle school we moved to the property where I still live, now (I'm 51). The house we moved into didn't have central heat and air and it was several years before Mom and Dad had central heat/air put in (I was in college by that point). In the Summer we ran a window unit AC. In cooler/cold weather we heated with a wood heater that was in the kitchen and had kerosene heaters as backup. There was plenty of wood on the property so I would help Dad get us set up with firewood for Winter. He had started helping his dad with cutting pulpwood when he was 12 and had held a few, different jobs doing similar things when he was younger so he knew what he was doing and was good with a chainsaw (I once heard a friend of his bet another guy that he could lay a quarter down anywhere around the circumference of a particular tree and that Dad would lay the tree over on it - the other guy declined the bet). So mostly felling, limbing and cutting wood into sections he did with the chainsaw. He kept a small camp axe handy in case he got most of the way through a tree and his gut told him it was safer to finish it off with an axe. I had a small hatchet I rarely used but as a middle schooler I thought it was awesome. Anyhow, splitting smaller stuff was done with an axe. Anything bigger than about the size of a large man's thigh and we used wedges and a maul. Point is I have used axes and know how to but don't really like them. With the kind of blades that are made now I would rather split smaller stuff with a heavy chopper knife, baton it for slightly larger stuff and, on the rare occasion I need to split something bigger out come the wedges and maul. I can take down small saplings faster, easier and, IMO, more safely with a heavy machete like my CRKT Halfachance than with a hatchet, small axe or even a bow saw (I tested the three of them in a stand if saplings one day). That's just me but those were my results. These days, when camping or the like, anything I might want something 'axe like' for I prefer using a large tomahawk like a CRKT Woods Chogan or a Cold Steel Rifleman's Hawk. I still have a couple of axes - one full size, one boy's axe - and a few hatchets that I keep just in case because sometimes (rarely) you just need an axe but I'm really not all that crazy about them.

If you want to fall a tree use a hand saw like a Silky big boy or equivalent. It will take sooo much less energy and so much less time. IF you want to cut down a BIG tree use a Katana boy... Thats an amazing saw that will cut a tree down sooo much faster then ANY axe could imagine AND its much less work. An axe is good for splitting wood you cut with a saw... OR smaller wood I would rather use a knife to split smaller wood.

Reckoned you would go lighter after couple hand surgeries. Thats how i have gone. Hit 50 years old, now shoulder and hand wrist issues. Ive sold my heavy axes gone to lighter. Different tools for different situations, homesteading vs bushwhacking

I have a collection, ain't buying no more. I miss hammer poll. Thick, heavy machete works for me.

That’s why I like my Stihl pro universal forestry axe with an Ochsenkopf C60 2.8lbs head. It has a special 5 piece system to hang the head is virtually indestructible.

Pimpin glad to see you. It’s seems like we reach a point in life where we just know what we like and what we dislike in life. I know the tomahawk I have I don’t enjoy cutting big stuff with I started throwing the old double edged axe in the mix.

Hatchets are awesome for crafting and fireplace duty. They aren't meant for felling and heavy work. I do a fair amount of greenwood carving with my hatchets and they are the right tool for carving. I use my boy's axe for felling and utility work right tool for the job.

Tac 😮 I ain't seen you on the tube since you were shooting knife blades with centerfire boolits.😅 Don't want to guess how long that's been. SMH! Well, here's a thing. I split most of my bucked wood up to 8" width or so with a Marbles hatchet I bought for maybe $20, 20 years ago, lol. I use a 3lb handsledge ( metal, not rubber ) and baton with it. The poll has flattened a bit but not as much as you'd think and the handle is still rock steady. I started doing that because I had no respect for it as a cutting tool.Its a gem as a splitter tho! Just don't kneecap yourself with the sledgehammer. If I bury the head before it's splits the log, I have a piece of oak shaped to fit the poll and then gets wider and it always finishes the split. I have a Gransfor felling axe , 36 " handle, the large splitting axe and a Wetterlings felling axe. Stihl chainsaw for the rest. Then there's my Hanwei katana for delimbing, lol. Stop selling tools....your axing for trouble. :)) All the best Tac.

I stick an ace heavy hatchet in a pallet between boards and then hammer the hammer end free floating-it drives the hatchet to clean cut off the nails that hold the pallet together .. ...i got an ace hardware double head axe and i can always carry its head and make the wooden handle diy easy...all you need is a hammer ended axe head to drive with a big old hammer

Glade your back and doing well. Never been a fan of hatchet. They are almost useless. I do like tomahawks but mostly for play. My most used is a splitting mull. Just don't use axes much. Really though I don't have a wood stove anymore. So my use is mostly camping and wood burning grill. So I use a saw and a wedge. Anyway good to see you back and full of piss and vinegar as usual! For me a hatchet is for splitting firewood aka arm sized or slighly bigger. I dont chop down hugger size trees. A bow saw works fine for leg size trees And a bahco laplaner is just right for bucking arm sizers too. A bow saw for leg sizers. Thats my point for an axe or hatchet.

Aaaah yeah! Thing is you don't seem to do much bushcrafting/camping/hiking expedition. Of course to work on your land a hatchet isn't much use, as are big knives. For me I'm selling my big blades because for bushcraft they're just not as cool as a hatchet and a small knife. And to work on my land Silky saws and bigger axes.
