This is the classic CBS theme to NFL football from 1965-1969. The song is Confidence, as known as the Walter Mitty March. Enjoy.

The chills of great nostalgia! The NFL has throwback jersey days. Wouldn't it be great to hear this throwback revisited before games remastered and coming thru a modern sound system!!

Every Sunday I could not wait for NFL on CBS. This version was an update to the earlier one that used actual footage (which I preferred), but the music was the same.

YES! This is it. I had a vague memory of the drums & the CBS “ticket” logo tearing in half, but as soon as the music started, I knew I had hit “paydirt”! I was 8 in the fall of 1969; we always had sunday dinner at my grandma’s house, for the love & good food but also because she had a color TV for the games! Vikings win this game 27-7; go on to their first of four Super Bowl losses, to KC this time. Still looking for that Vikes-Bills Super Bowl… “Somebody’s GOTTA win!”

I remember "Confidence" as the theme to NFL broadcasts on CBS in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

and late Sunday afternoons in New Jersey, watching the Rams and 49ers games from the West Coast in my parents TV in their room. Our NY Giants games at home were radio only in those days...blackouts in effect.

This version must have been a coverup of the regular network feed used only in the Midwestern states where Amoco gasoline was branded as Standard (Indiana to the Rockies).

There was a version they used for several years before this one with real footage. I would pay to see that one again.

I never knew that. It must only have been used for a year or two since Confidence was composed in 1964.

It may have been written before that, but it's "debut" was in the off-Broadway musical "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", which opened October 26, 1964. I can't imagine this instrumental version was used by CBS & the NFL until after that debut, so 1965 season at the earliest possible.

Actually, I believe that the music is the exact same, it was the game footage video I was the wanting to see again.

@@SlimJimPoisson right, there were two versions of this open that I remember using live-action footage. The better (and later) one finished with Bob Hayes crossing the goal line (on a long punt return, I think), and two officials trailing the play signaling “Touchdown”. Even back then, CBS was striving to be the “Cowboys Broadcasting System”.

I too remember the live action version. CBS Sports opened up to a cut out shot of a football, then a center snapping it. Ended with a touchdown return signaled by two officials. This WAS football. I too would pay money to see that version again.

This brings back memories. I was just 13 years- old that year. Cigarette ads back then on TV would be unthinkable today. How times have changed!

They were banned about a year later, in January 1971. But hard liquor ads were banned from TV back then and allowed now. Go figure.

WOW!! Before my time. I grew up on Brent Musberger's NFL today in the late 70's. I was only 14 months old when the '69 season started.🤣👶🏾

Definitely one of my 3 favorite opening themes for pro football. The other 2 were NBC s opening theme throughout the 70s and Heavy Action for Monday night football 70s. Something magical about football in the 60s and 70s that can never be replicated. Baseball too for that matter.

Those who say that this is the best theme music are really old and living in the past. This is the best theme music. P.S. The voice over sounds like a young Don Criqui. P.S. 2. My dad smoked True's and drove a Ford.

question i thought the superbowl started in 67 ? why they then was saying the NFL championship?

From 1966-69, the NFL and AFL were still separate entities despite the announced merger, and their respective league championships were for the right to play in the Super Bowl. Of course in 1970, after the merger became official, they became the NFC and AFC Championships.
