Getting a $50 fine for operating a sports book or numbers operation is nothing. Who wouldn’t do it essentially there is no consequence..

This was survival for many back in the day. Bklyn where I lived had so many store fronts and clubs. We were poor but if you hit a number you hit the lottery. This still goes on to this day. If you want to get a horse bet or numbers bet you could still find a Bookie. Even with the tech of today. For instance if you need say 500 bucks the banks will laugh you out. The Bookie will make his interest just like the bank. Thid I find interesting it brings back my early childhood memories. But remember loose lips sink ships. So you kept everything to yourself. To this day it remains the same and the beat goes on.

You said "We were poor but if you hit a number you hit the lottery." And if one wasn't already poor they soon would be after blowing much if not all of their money on the horses or other such thing. Then they would need to borrow money from 'somewhere' to pay their bills and feed themselves and their families. Obviously the worst place to borrow that money would be from the lowlife scum mafia loan sharks who fully exploited these people's weaknesses and/or desperation and charge them ridiculously high interest rates that would grow and grow and soon dwarf the amount of the actual loan.

Everyone associates the mob with NYC because of the five families of course. But Boston doesn’t get as much notice. The city was infested with gangsters. Italian and Irish. My father grew up with Howie Winters sons. And knew a few other big names as well. Shit, the brother of the most powerful politician in the city and state’s was one of biggest names in organized crime. Lol

Yeah people don't realize how serious Boston was. Guys like John Martorano, Joe MacDonald, Joe "The Animal" Barboza, Vincent "Jimmy the Bear" Flemmi, Buddy McClean, Steve "The Rifleman" Flemmi, Frank "Cadillac Frank" Salemme, Illario "Larry Baione" Zannino and Tommy King were all incredibly feared gangsters going back to the 60's. People think New York was the only city that had serious gangsters and killers but the guys I named were way more brazen and serious than 99% of the guys in New York. They had to walk you in to rooms and shoot you in the back of the head but these Boston guys were machine gunning you down while you were in a car with 3 others in broad day light.

@@Cardb33 yup they were hunters. And they’d wait til you were on the freeway and Swiss cheese you in broad daylight. Even the cops were gangsters. Joey Bangs ..Clemente. The Memorial Day Medford depositors trust bank robbery. My pops grew up with Bangs’ brother Paul. I grew up hearing stories about people that would eventually be adapted into books and movies. Pretty surreal.

@@jjjrjjjr1 well yes, but corporate America will not let out loans to degenerates and high risk customers with poor credit scores. This is where organized crime doesn't discriminate and this is where they flourish. And if you default on your payments, they will acquire property, businesses, cars, whatever is tangible and of value. As we know money and gambling go hand in hand. 👊😎

The fix was in with the local police . Nobody would touch this joint. It's so obvious , the goings on and the fact the police were paid off. This went on in every city, except Vegas. It was legalized betting.
