Doesn't matter, although the shipping company says they are getting new ones issued, they will stay aboard or in custody until the investigation is done with them. However if the ship goes into drydock and goes "dead ship" they wouldn't be able to remain aboard. Shipping company would have to provide housing. If the authorities don't want them any more, and their 'contract' is up they would have to return them home under our laws or retain them until the ship gets to another country. I am referring to US crews whom are covered under the Jones Act. Foreign crews may not have those rights.

My one takeaway from this story is that the ship crew has been living on the ship for almost 2 months and hasn't left. I figure it's because the infrastructure on their ship has more resources than a better lifestyle than anything they'd find in Baltimore.

At the end of the day, all U.S. Taxpayers will be on the hook to pay for the disaster that the crew of this ship caused including the new bridge, the cargo, all lawsuits, and the Dali.

@@TheFiscallySound For what? The Captain is on the bridge. All the problems that led to the ship losing power and going dead in the water occurred in the engine room. The NTSB preliminary report shows this, based on data recorder timestamps. Now they know the WHAT, they have to figure out the WHY. That may take a couple of years. If Maryland had protected their bridges like the Port Authority in NY/NJ protected theirs, we would not be talking about this right now. The Bay Bridge is also at high risk of this happening.

Although the ship was stopped and not making way she was still under way. This requires a full crew on board as required. Even if some huge exception (which there is no precedent for that I can recall) was made, they still need a crew to handle lines, maintain fire watch, keep power, inspect the bilges, as well as the myriad of other chores required to keep the vessel as safe as possible under the circumstances. Most sign on for several months on ocean voyages and that would not expire until the vessel is no longer under way and is secure in safe harbor. Abandoning your duties in the midst of a voyage (yes I understand it is not going anywhere. It is still legally on the voyage that it left the dock for) is a criminal offense and punishable as such. Short of a medical crisis and a medivac you do not walk away from your contract. Going to sea is a different ball game where you are not allowed to decide "I quit" and walk off or get in a boat and leave. In this case we also have potential witnesses and possible participants if negligence is shown. They might not be retrievable if they leave.

Leave and go where? The ship is their home and the ship is their job. They still had to do their jobs on the ship.
