Abraham Lincoln's wife saw a lot of tragedy in her years. That contributed to years of depression for Mary Todd Lincoln, but there may have been a physical cause for her mental anguish as well. Dr. Jon LaPook has more.

3/4 of her sons died before the age of 20, and her husband met a violent end and just as they had began to reconcile their marriage. The war and their son’s death put a horrendous strain on their marriage, after Lincoln’s hypothetical 2nd term they’d plan to travel the world, Abe wanted to visit the holy lands of Judea and the Orient, and then live quietly. Tragic how it ended for both of them, she died in obscurity in a mental asylum.

Yeah people tend to forget Eddie Lincoln, their second son. He died at the tender age of three due to illness that he had endured during his very short life. He actually died just a few months before Willie was born.

Very enlightening video. I always believed that sitting next to someone you love when they are assassinated would be enough to drive anyone mad (even Jackie Kennedy became a bit paranoid after JFK was assassinated) but in the case of Mary Todd Lincoln, it's interesting to find out that there may have been other contributing factors.

It can’t always be picked up on a simple blood test at all. I was told by my GP that I had high B 12 levels and to stop supplementing with B vitamins. The reality was that I was hardly taking any vitamins at all. My body could not assimilate it, was the real truth. It caused mental issues out of the blue for me ( almost overnight) like severe anxiety and panic disorder and I thought that I’d have to go to the looney bin. After looking at my blood work and seeing that my red blood cell count was low I did a lot of research and decided to start intramuscular injections of methycobalamin. Within a couple of weeks all all of the panicky symptoms and wacky moods were gone. This is the scary part about medicine and Drs. If I had listened to my Drs and not trusted my body I could have ended up far worse. Thanks for the video!

I so admire Mary Todd Lincoln and one has to remember that they did not stress the use of coping mechanisms at that time like they do today. It was not so known then that you had to take walks, or take long hot baths or talk to someone in confidence to relieve stress. Getting massages is another thing that helps stress in mental illness and listening to music. They did not have record players or CD players like they have not. One cannot judge. She was a brilliant lady who lost her mind after so much tragedy and strife. Her brothers were also killed in the Civil War and she had said that since they were Confederates, she believed they would have come after her husband, President Lincoln himself. She had paranoia but not without reason in a lot of matters.

Congrats, though you are not claiming Abraham is a relative but Mary is, I usually take it with a grain of salt when someone says Abraham is related. Though Abraham has no *immediate* relatives alive today meaning sons or daughters grandchildren or great grandchildren, Abraham has biolgical family in distant cousins whose great grandfather and great great grandfather was Abraham Lincoln's Biological father. Very few are known from my research over the decades. I am Facebook friends with only one who was verified to be biological to Abraham and does speeches at museums throughout America. He was introduced to me from one of my customers actually. I also seen many people falsely claim to be relatives that I had him fact check on resulting in a majority of them lying. Same goes for alledged family of Corbin, the man that taken credit for shooting John Booth in the farm however the doctor examining the alledged body if booth specified other facts discrediting Corbin's claims. To this date, I have never seen anyone but you claim to be biolgical family to Mary however though you are a distant cousin as well. From my studies on Mary, she had her times being very ignorant with others , she comes from a very well off family of that time and she was dedicated at one time to her education. She was not Abraham's first choice for marriage but he had a very high emotional connection with her that led him back to her. Abraham actually seperated from her one time prior to marriage but returned. Though she has severe mental issues of that time leading to depression, Abraham also had severe depression and feared to carry a knife with worries about taking his own life with a knife so he never did. Depression though negative seemed to be a common denominator between the two. With the loss if their two sons starting with Willie which being the youngest had severely effected both Mary & Abraham deeply sending Mary in a downwards spiral. I feel bad for your 4th. cousin, I do. Though Abraham has no biological ties by blood to you directly and only by marriage, it's important to note the success your family had during the 1800s to of become a well respected family in public opinion before Mary actually tied the knot with Abraham in marriage. If you look at it, Abraham has a very hard life as a child , deprived and poor yet he was very intelligent. Mary was raised in a very well off family financially with a outstanding upbringing. I guess opposites really did attract there. I know things in Abrahams life stemmed his decisions while as president and he worked up his Political life with just under 12 months of law school which that was all it took to become a Attorney in those days. With all the people in America at that time and no strong way of communicating state to state, that alone was a impressive task to actually achieve. Have you been to her grave, Abraham's and Willy's ? I know they are burried side by side but though I never been there, at the start of this year, I passed by there on my way to Yellowstone. I was with a lifetime friend from Australia and he had to catch a plane back home so unfortunately we had to rush so we did not have a chance to stop by, but I wish I could of. Abraham Lincoln was my favorite president in American history who achieved the most difficult task any president has ever did which I found amazing.

She was also a woman of extreme intelligence who was a political creature but wasn't allowed to be due to being a woman. She loved her country but got accused of being a spy for the South which she never was--she was truly patriotic. I wish she'd not let Lincoln back in her life after he canceled their engagement because she never truly believed her loved her and he condescended to her and treated her like a spoiled child instead of the equal she wanted to be. Very misunderstood, definitely. And how her did her by tricking her--it was awful. I know she needed help but he definitely mishandled how he got it for her.

I have always had a lot of respect and empathy for Mrs. Lincoln. Is there any other historic figure who suffered so much loss and tragedy as she did? In a time when psychology and psychiatry was in the infancy stage of development, this wife, mother, and first lady potentially would have benefited from medication and counseling. I can't even imagine how I would deal with half of the issues she had to during her life span. She was courageous and persevered for the rest of her life.
