This happened to me and my friends back in the 80's in Simi Valley. No lie. He knocked on the garage door and as we opened it up we could see the black shoes, pants, badge, gulp. We thought we were going to jail as the garage wreaked! He asked us to turn down and explained he had played in a band when he was young too. We asked him what instrument. He replied "drums" and our drummer held out his drumsticks. The officer took off his billy club sat on the throne and I did a little rock n roll riff. He did two songs with us, asked us to turn down again then left. We were blown away. Forty years later I'm still amazed. Great guy, great experience.

I once got lugged for "possession". When getting bailed, the booking officer , upon returning my property noticed guitar picks, Allen wrenches etc. Turns out he was a guitar guy himself and we started swapping guitar stories. Usually I want "out","now" but this guy was truly knowledgeable about guitars and music history and we had, I dare say, a civil and interesting conversation. Interestingly the Public Defendant who later helped me get undone was a serious concert musician. Let them play music. If it's truly disruptive or if audible after 9p, on Weekdays or after 1a on Weekends okay , yank the plug. I hear atonal construction gear 24/7 , jet aircraft overhead by which, as God is my judge, I tell time, and some boutique "Doodle" dog yapping incessantly ( I like most dogs). Can't and wouldn't call the police about these realities.. Noise happens. Don't like it?! Get out to the Suburbs or the sticks. This cop did an intelligent thing on this incident.

My goodness, in these difficult times in our world, when many ordinary, everyday, law-abiding citizens have learned to become frightened of the Police, because, sadly, they have had good reason to be. In THIS EXACT environment, this is EXACTLY what a Police Officer needs to be. This lovely man (& Policeman) said, "I became a cop because I have an overwhelming love for people." WOW, I don't think I've ever heard a Policeman or Policewoman echo such sentiments. When I learned that men and women who become Police officers no longer take the official oath "To swear to protect the public trust" (i.e. all of us citizens) and instead they now swear to "Uphold the law" (& some other twisted words) - the "Law" is whatever corrupt politicians want it to be, in TRUTH. Uh, not exactly the best thing there. Don’t get me wrong he shouldn’t have arrested them but encouraging teens to smoke? He should be fired
@stevenhunt26902 жыл бұрын
Unfunny Dave I think you may be missing the spirit of his comment. What he’s saying is that it’s nice to see cops understanding people’s situation rather than punishing them. Teenagers are stupid and do stupid things. That includes smoking. The cop probably knew that and decided to take the smoke break as an opportunity to connect with them. Those teenagers probably learned a lot more in that smoke break than they would have had the cop just gotten onto them and sent them home. No matter what was said in that smoke break, those teens are more likely to obey the law and respect police officers in the future just because they shared a cig a cool cop.
@unfunnydave54852 жыл бұрын
@@stevenhunt2690 by smoking with them he is setting an example of “this is ok.” Teaching teenagers that smoking is ok is not, kids take actions to determine what is ok, not words. He shouldn’t punish them, but he should encourage them to not smoke instead of joining. I definitely get the spirit of the comment, but a cop doing that is just not good
@unfunnydave54852 жыл бұрын
@@audiopium2765 You think that I’m trying to hate cops because I think one that encouraged teens to smoke should be fired? If a cop politely said something like, “hey, you’re not in trouble. I think it would be beneficial to you if you tried to quit. There’s many place that are supposed to help you with that and I think you should quit.” Something like that is more beneficial than encouraging them to smoke
@unfunnydave54852 жыл бұрын
@@audiopium2765 what part of “actions speak louder than words” do you think I missed. I used it as an argument as to why smoking with the teens as a cop encourages the teens to smoke. I never said it would work, but if enough people say it, it gains way more weight and causes the smoke to want to quit for the sake of their peers.
