Rails rattle and shake with idling diesel engines, and now residents in one community want it to stop. CBS2's Jennifer McLogan reports.

I live in East Patchogue just a few miles from that area. All I can say is the railroad was there before those homes were. I been loving and been train watching here since the Alco days.

Listen my father worked at that crossing in the 50's . Trains would lay up in those back then . I was a Conductor from 1970-1999 and laied up trains up there many times. Those tracks were there many years before the houses were there. I've been on the north track and the home owners would shut down the engine. This causes the train to be late and their connections. There is a law banning such actions. The L. I. R. R. never pressed charges. The gates are up and the crossing is clear .

@@Flayvozi You only think you would. I've had long weekends where there have been 5 engines running, sometimes 4 sometimes 5 days. The engineer and crew hop out and jump in a waiting car and just leave them running. Having a train run past your house is one thing, your house shakes, there's a lot of rumbling noise and of course, there is the blast of a train horn many times. But an idling train is very different. There is a low rumbling noise similar to the bass sound from a loud party next door. The diesel smell comes in your yard so that you want to head inside, once inside if your windows are open the diesel smell fills your house so you better have an air conditioner on those hot days. The rubble stone foundation of my 1920's house has stones that are loose and falling out, 2 of my walls are bowed inward and the plaster ceilings and walls are all cracked. Believe me, there is no romance to living next to the train tracks. The trains on regular weeks during the whole year are parked across from me 3 to 4 times a week that is overnight or longer. That doesn't count the multiple times they sit there on a daily basis for several hours at a time. I can only say, I hope you never have to experience this.

They probably bought their homes thinking they were getting a good deal. My aunt and uncle bought there 1st home next to the LIRR in Kingspark back in the 1970's and, as a child, I thought it was the coolest thing to have a train in the backyard!

Ok so to clear some things up One running all the trains to Montauk and Speonk will make things worse for the line. Between Babylon and Sayville(The station before Patchogue) the line is 2 tracks so the railroad which has been doing this for over 130 years uses Patchogue as a turn around the station for Shuttles between Babylon and Patchogue so people along that 6 stop segment of the line have consent service since it has 2 tracks. Having run further on the 1 track line reduces the number of trains it can run as they would all have to share that 1 track segment. Two electrifying the line while on the plans and being considered but are not the top priority as it cost a lot of money and a huge process to do in which no matter what type of outreach they do these people will complain of the work like oh there working all day and crap or regular riders will complain of the lack of service on the line during the work. Plus the ridership demand right now does not justify the cost for it. The line while very popluar durring the summer season outside of that its not as used so its gonna be a while for that Three like said in this video they have been there since 1869 when this station was built there was nothing around it. It was like how Speonk station is. People chose to build their homes right up to where the track is and these people dam well knew it and had just taken five seconds to look up would know Lirr short turns trains here.

I think the LIR should electrify all their lines especially in this area. They have the cars and locomotives that can run electrically on 750 VOLTS DC CURRENT! Build a buffer or high wall alongside these tracks especially after installing the 3rd rail! Electric railroading is so much cleaner!

Electric on a locomotive branch lines will not happen, too much money to put 3rd rail, that's why they bring up batteries for m7.

@CBS New York Get facts from the railroad instead of just creating more fake news! Trains that are supposed to lay over for more than 20 minutes are moved away from these people's homes, so any claim that they just sit there for long periods of time is not factual. Not to mention this is not anything new, contrary what the people say in the video. Patchogue has always been a turning point for trains. The fact that these residents make the laughable, time wasting fight because they chose to live adjacent to an active railroad is the reason why people can get away with being morons. Your rating hunting executives know they can pick the low hanging fruit of people who cannot make good choices in life and the masses will be misinformed about unimportant issues that are now made bigger issues than they will ever actually be. If you want to wonder why the world is so screwed up, it's giving a fighting chance to people who do not deserve the sympathy. But what else is new!

Thank you so much for this comment. I am tired of people being stupid. I live next to the LIRR tracks in an apartment building, and frankly, I like the noise of the trains. But that doesn't mean anything. What annoys me is the visits I get at my door from people with petitions to make the LIRR stop blowing horns. People are so dumb to move next to tracks and complain.

@@JSquaredJJYT The Lirr is planning on getting Dual Mode Chargers to replace the DE/DM30ACs because they’re more efficient, they don’t pollute a lot and they’re more quieter so there could be less complaints (Metro North is having the same plan to replace the P32s)

My dad works for the lirr and I’d 56 in seniority so he’s been doing this for a while and the lady in the beginning of the video used to use a broom to hit the engine shut down button so give them a break before you complain

Put 750v DC third rail top contact on these tracks or have hybrid diesel locomotives that use battery power when idling and recharged with the 750 v DC Third rail top contact

EpicThe 112: That's a great idea! There's a couple of freight lines near me in Illinois where diesels frequently idle for hours most likely waiting for a red signal to turn green! This is in West Glenview the railroads Canadian Pacific and Union Pacific which have been there forever before million dollars homes were built. Apparently those residents knew beforehand what they were going to encounter and so far no major complaints. I do like the idea for electrification of the Long Island Railroad passenger trains. Only New York & Atlantic freight trains would still be diesel that use Long Island Railroad.

Diesels ARE hybrids! How do you think they work? The engine turns the wheels via a shaft? No. The engine runs a generator which charges the batteries which energizes the motors. The technology has been around since the 50s. All diesel locomotives operate this way. Furthermore, if you shut them off, you have MAYBE one good crank to get it started and If it doesn’t start, your f’d.

Governor Cuomo please respond to these residents. Let them know that the railroad was there first, and no one should have built their property that close to a railroad right of way. If they want a wall, a barrier, etc, do a GoFundMe, and build it themselves. The state is not obligated to, nor would pay for such, since the railroad was there first, and is under FRA rules and regulations...

Black E. Blackerton: In the Chicago area we have 4 rapid transit CTA LINES with street grade level crossings. People often complain about gearing the crossing gates bells well into the later night. These people too forget these railroad L lines were here first also. These are 3rd rail lines. Of coarse the 3rd rail is always disconnected in streets by active always on both sides of the streets. I mean hearing the crossing gates bells they complain about. On the Ravenswood L those trains operate through 4:30AM and your can here the bells on the crossing gates every so many minutes. However once the gates are down the bells turn off.

These diesels are technically hybrids. They use the diesel engine to generate electricity for the electric motors that spin the wheel.

@Lazys The Dank Engineer the LIRR is literally broke. They owe millions and millions of dollars and have not made enough money in a long time. Now with the pandemic and lower ridership they are in a deep hole. The majority of the money they actually do make is from Nassau County Southshore middle class people forced to go to work and school because they can't wfh. Everything else is just losses and pennies.

The only solution to this is to electrify the tracks. The fact that one of the busiest commuter rail systems in the world still relies on unelectrified tracks, single-track territory, and diesel trains is a problem of its own

the lower ridership levels out near Patchogue don't really justify electrification, as the bulk of riders use the western (and electrified) part of the line

M3s are definitely not more efficient. The M7s have many more seats. And yes, there's no need for electrification on some parts of the railroad (at the moment), like east of Patchogue or Speonk, but It's definitely needed on the Port Jefferson and Greenport lines.

Too expensive and not worth the amount of money for the amount of ridership. Also if you electrify you need a new electric train yard and where is that going to go? That would cause even more complaints.

Actually, they do justify electrification with the growing population in the towns and during the spring and summer time when fire island is open ridership is booming lirr does have plans to electrify this line and its much easyier then other projects given that this line up till Sayville is 2nd track meaning they just hav to put a 3rd rail in and its up them to add a 2nd platfrom at Patchogue note the tracks as far as patchouge are 2 but the platforms are 2 as far as sayville the stop before

Maybe it won't hurt at all if the LIRR just buy and used BEMU trains instead of putting batteries in existing trains (failed) and try to electrify the diesel branches (still too expensive and there are places along the diesel lines, you can't install the electrify third rail and also unsafe clearance for EMU trains).

This is so ridiculous that the Mta is doing this on the Montauk branch because my cousin Melissa used to live on railroad street in Greenlawn a mile from the station and not one train would idle on the second track to wait to be transferred on the main track and honestly I don't know why they're doing this on the Montauk branch because they don't do it on the Port Jefferson.

Ian Conciatori thats because in Port Jefferson there is a Yard Facility and Montauk they do that the station area is also a Yard and Patchogue is only side tracks there is no Yard and Speonk the Yard is right across from the Station

Well here's the thing the Montauk line has 3 turnarounds Patchogue Speonk and Montauk. Speonk is in the middle of no were the station that is and has a yard so the noise thing is not a problem Montauk also has a yard so its not as bad. Patchogue is a turn around becasue its were the line goes from 2 tracks to 1 due to all the homes around it they cant build a yard. People complain oh the mta shouldn't do this but even before it was the mta when it was 1860 trains did this Patchogue has always been a turn around these people made a choice its not like they lived here and then the mta did it cbs was wrong in which it started 20 years ago this station was always like that but since were in a time and age that hte MTA is having so many fuck ups new companys like CBS will do any thing to shame them more or give the wrong image. LIRR Was here first in this case and they want to fix it they have plans but im willing to bet the area is gonna reject it for some dumb reason and keep on complaing

The 3rd rail installation would be easier to install than overhead catenary and their supports. Fence off these tracks afterward except at street grade crossings where the 3rd rail would be disconnected.
