When a security company hires someone who does not have a gun permit, the security officer is generally allowed to work unarmed posts only until they qualify with their weapon and obtain the permit. The security company in question screwed the pooch on this one.

You would be driving without a license. You don't need any other reason to say no, but "I don't know you" is a great reason. In the Navy, we had a superior try to have us surrender our IDs to him while in port so we couldn't leave when off [we had to work that day, but it wasn't a duty day so we could actually leave]. He was concerned we'd leave, get drunk, and be useless the next day. And we wouldn't be able to leave without ID. Everyone refused as it's required everyone carry their ID at all times. He tried to threaten us for disobeying an order, but nobody gave them up. He couldn't take it further because we'd be ordered to be out of uniform (you're out of uniform even if all you're missing is ID). I don't know about anyone else, but I left the ship after work and went to a great burger place, then went back to the ship. I had dinner with a couple beers. Worked fine the next day. He never tried it again. This was San Francisco about 20 years ago.

I just was not required by my company to present my license to be held for access, so I chose not to. If they want to verify my identity with the info, and return it to me, that's fine.

I know that may sound like splitting hairs, but it's a big difference between being unlicensed and not being in possession of the required paperwork.

A lot of jobs will have you learned the job then acquire a license and while on the job. Likely hired and was going through training. Even in restaurant business, you need a server's license, but they allow you to work first and get so many hours under the belt and you naturally get the license.

Lawsuits like this you name everyone but the mall probably has only a small percentage, if it's a store security then it's not the malls issue. The real percentage will lay with the security company that is hired. They will probably loss their contract and I bet they are ordered to pay out. Agreed but given the totally irrational actions of this Plastic Rent a Cop, he would most likely have been shot as he fled the scene. Hope the Guard, and more importantly the Security Company get sued back to the middle of last week.

That guard waited his entire life for some action. Finally, a struck cone gave him just enough reason to live out his "I'm a badass" fantasy. Cops do it all the time.

If the rules are anything in CA like they are in TX. That security guard is in a whole lot of trouble. If I heard right he wasn't licensed to carry the firearm. In TX that is considered a Commissioned Security Guard to carry a firearm. Even then that firearm should only leave the holster to defend yourself, the lives of others, or the protection of valuable property. A road cone is none of the above. His Supervisor should have known if he was licensed by CA to carry a firearm on the job. All they ended up doing is causing a lot of greif for themselves and their company.
