The story of the miracle of the oil is anything but simple, as correspondent Martha Teichner notes. She talks with Jewish food historian and cookbook writer Jayne Cohen, and with Niki Russ Federman, a fourth-generation owner of Russ & Daughters, a New York City institution of Jewish food for 105 years.

I just made latkes and ate all of them. Plus, Jane Pauly is still the chicest women on television. Always has been the best dressed most elegant person I can recall. So, there.

She made her "big" start on NBC channel 5 Chicago! Many other national TV news folk had their pro beginnings in Chi-town! Lester Holt, Deborah Norville, Bill Curtis, Valerie Perrine, Captain Kangaroo, Soupy Sales, Sir Lawrence Olivier, Svengali, Dirwood Kirby, Ernie Kovacs, Gumby, et al!

Great recipe. They done it well albeit it’s not only holiday food but a weekly food as well. A holiday latkes have ritual oil. Weekly- not

My mother often made potato pancakes when there were enough leftover boiled potatoes. She mashed them and added to her basic flour pancake recipe. She also added salt, pepper, and a bit of garlic and we topped them with a butter pat and sour cream. These were a real treat for the family.

I love latkes. My Chinese mom makes onion pancakes with potato flour. It’s very similar to this type of pancakes.

My mom always made them when we were little, now I buy them frozen year round from Trader Joe’s.

Betty Palermo yeah, but I have arthritis so grating and peeling potatoes and onions is too tough on my poor joints.

Spiral Breeze My Jewish landlady approved of the frozen latkes from Trader Joe’s, too. She said they were not only good enough, but also very good. However, she insisted on doing chopped liver herself, using a meat grinder, not food processor, for desired texture - it was to-die-for.

real jews do NOT peel potatoes for latkes or anything else....I suspect because potato skins contain most of their nutrition...... i'm making a bunch - 20 pounds worth -- as we speak, fried in a combo of cornoil/olive oil/ schmaltz from fried chickens last weekend....with onions GARLIC salt pepper...and herbs de provence.....trust me, they can be quite addictive....

IT'S ' BC ' OR ' AD ' , ANYTHING ELSE IS WRONG AND BIGOTED ! this could have been a lovely story about delicious latkes , why did you have to ruin it by making it antiChristian ! read a book , know your history - it's not only distasteful and low-class , but it's stupid ! 🎄 and on Christmas week ! how tacky !
