@Anthony Joseph it's funny that the original point was how you shouldn't judge people based on different perspectives (western society and Greek philosophers vs eastern and Chinese philosophers) while you try to make fun of someone for using "countercultural" slang and not "proper" English.

Yeah, right? The exchange reminded me of an episode of the big bang theory, where the white guy (the Sheldon character) was telling the Asian/Indian guy (Raj) all about customs in Raj's country, and he looks at Sheldon and says something like "don't explain my culture to me"!

@@linglee5759 Alex is correct. My point was Eddie is clearly an intelligent charismatic person with things to say. He specifically said he wants to break stereotypes. And immediately the reporter (most likely unintentionally) went straight to a stereotype. That's what I was saying.

Eddie: It upsets me no one knows where TAIWAN is. When I was growing up, people thought we were from THAILAND. Me: It upsets me no one knows where THAILAND is. People thought I was from TAIWAN. (back in the 80s)

@@osmanshah5046 Actually, most of them don't. Americans are notorious for their ignorance of global geography. Also the distribution of immigrants are different in the different regions of the US; so depending on where one grew up in the US, the people around a person may be more familiar with one country vs. another.

@@LightofBankai agreed, it's a human thing not confined to americans. though in america it just so happens to be that asian american males are subject to a narrower set of stereotypes. i think when you look at it from a broader perspective it's all the same, you'd just be swapping out one race with another. society needs hierarchy to function smoothly

Man it's called that asian parent tough love, everytime my mom compliments me i'd be ok...ma what do you want me to do??? What, can't a mom just compliment her daughter?...ma we both know where this is going...just cut to the chase....fine i want you to do this ... for me (...= some asian culture fulfillment that you can't say no to)

I grew up so similar to Eddie..😢 But we all go through adversity and makes us a better person. Today I am so happy with my life and how my parents sacrificed to get us to the U.S.🙏👍

I’m a white female, and watching fresh off the boat took me back to the 90’s during my childhood. I related with Eddie because I was the lazy b’s and mostly c’s kid, whereas my two younger sisters seemed to have it all together, with their perfectly tidy neat rooms and perfect grades etc. I’m currently on season 4, but it’s been a very fun and enjoyable show to watch after getting off work.

Being an Asian American also, Eddies journey is so close to the me in my brothers and I journey in life. The only difference is we didn’t get picked on as much because I’m 6’5 and my bro is 6’2. But I have done that ruler test also just hoping I fit in white Girls eyes. I laugh about it now being in my 30’s.

@Kay Flip The old countries? What are you going on about? ha. No country is identical to another we may have similar values and cultures but no way are they identical. I would say immigrants share similar experiences because they live in a country which is not where their ancestors are from so they get trated differently. I am British Born Chinese so I have many similar stories with Indians growing up in the UK etc. I wouldn't say our countries are identical though and no way is Asia like South America.

@@cheng8881 yeah but as someone who is Indian, parents are very strict about school. I think that's a trait shared by everyone in Asia from India to China. They have similar values. You might only be given one or two career options as well. Only doctor or engineer.

black women and asian men are perceived very similarly in relation to their counterparts, just on the opposite side of the spectrum. The perceived stereotypes that make black men desirable(manly, masculine, aggressive, etc etc) in the dating arena become negative for black women. Its works the same way for asian women(submissive, passive, quiet, etc etc) and asian men. Hence why they is such a fetishization of black men and asian women.

I think there is a connection because black women and Asian men are low on society’s totem pole. They don’t get the respect or recognition and in our competitive society few make it like Eddie to become role models.

What's funny is that the original black/white interracial "couples" were white men and black women...and the original Asian/white couples were Asian men and white women. We only live in this sliver of time but if we were to see history we would realize that black women and asian men have been desirable all along.

I’m Asian and this is almost my life, parents screening at you all the time. I’ve could’ve committed suicide several times over but didn’t do it. For those of you that are not Asian, this is how our parents want us to be strong and survive because they know that won’t be here forever. Our parents only want us to go on when their long gone.
