Sly Stone's new memoir

Sly Stone, who invented his own kind of funky hybrid of rock 'n' roll and R&B with his '60s group Sly and the Family Stone, has been living a private life for decades. Now 80, the reclusive music great has just penned a memoir, "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)." Correspondent Kelefa Sanneh talks with Questlove (who published the book), Sly's longtime friend George Clinton, and with Sly's real family, about the musician's revolutionary band; a life revolving around drugs; and how he is today.

Yes. Alive and clean for 4 years.That is good news. And he made it to age 80. I'm pleasantly surprised. He's my favorite artist and the Family Stone is my favorite band ever. The G.O.A.T's. Glad he's got ferocious kids. They are surely a positive factor. How could they not be? I can't think of anyone who'd have a problem with Sylvester Stewart being their daddy.

He Should get the Kennedy Center Honors for his contributions to American Culture. Along with James Brown, The Meters and George Clinton, he helped pioneer the sound of funk and made it successful.

What's always impressed me about Sly Stone is, despite his contrarian image, the positivity of his songs. From inspirational songs like "Stand" and "Everyday People" to happy songs like "Dance to the Music" and "Sing a Simple Song," they all seemed created to improve your day.

His impact on my life still lasts. I remember seeing the band at the Electric Circus on St. Mark's Place and later on at the Fillmore East. Great days, great times. At the time it was an opportunity for all of us to see a multi-racial, dual gender band make it big. Sly was very inclusive; we would write in singing or solo parts for all of his musicians. It really felt like a whole family band.

I'm 66 and grew up with their INCREDIBLE music! So many great songs. I also feel that Sly was Prince, before there was Prince... great blend of funk, soul and pop, and just pure genius talent!

The book sounds like a great idea, but I doubt there will be much we don't know or can't imagine. Sly's memory has been destroyed by decades of drug use, and the people who helped him write it weren't even around during Sly's glory years.

Sly did and does get his credit. It's a matter of knowing the history. Just because some people don't know much about his contributions doesn't mean his influences aren't known and apparent. it simply means that some people aren't informed.

I’m going to get the book i have a feeling it may be a bit of rewriting history to coincide with the now like the Elvis movie which i will reject with quest love at the helm i hope not- I’ve read some excerpts in rolling stone looked ok but poor dear sly was not ok for years - has his memory held up? I’ve read joel Selvin s book i want to take you higher as well both are excellent, but i plan to read this as it seems to be his swan song at 80 to set a record straight- I’m hoping his health holds up I’m glad he’s back in any way at all❤

His reign was brief but he was one of the most influential musicians ever. He was the first to fuse r&b, funk, rock and pop and in doing made music that was universally appealing. He and his band were actually the prototype for Prince.

I saw Sly in Ithaca, N.Y. In 1968 at the Boxcar, a very small venue made from two boxcars right after Dance to the Music was released. To see Sly and the Family Stone in such an intimate setting was an incredible experience. Best concert I’ve ever been to.

I saw the band in Berkeley, CA in an outdoor concert at night in perfect weather in the early 1970s and it had the same effect on me. It was the best concert I've ever been to (and I've been to many). I was up close and the music was transformative. I still get flashbacks of I Wanna Take You Higher like it's happening now (and I wasn't on any drugs). Sly Stone's music is just as good today as it was back then.

@@324cmac Ah! Sproul Plaza, Mario Savio, Free Speech Movement, People’s Park. The glory days. A few years before your concert, but still…. I assume Sly opened with Dance to the Music, as he did in Ithaca. “I’m going to add some bottom/ so the dancers just won’t hide.” Brought the house down, and the pulsating beat didn’t stop until the end of the entire performance. My son always says I lived in a much more exciting time in terms of music, civil rights and cultural change. I said yes, but we also had Vietnam.

From this piece… I’m tingling. I saw THE MAN Sly at Woodstock. We were wet and sleepy (at 3 AM?); Sly came on a got us ALL dancing!!!! Our gang… El Funkster, me, Groover, and BIG TIME… all know that Sly reached way deep inside his guts and brought forth the music. While a DJ in the early 60's Sly produced a band called The Beau Brummels. Their hit "Laugh Laugh" was the first top 40 folk rock hit by an American group (before The Byrds). Wherever you are Sly, thank you and be happy.

@@sharksport01 Maybe, but it was the beginning of the genre that became known as folk rock. They were the first American band to have a hit in that style. Then The Byrds hit number one and lots of acts (Mamas and Papas, The Turtles, Simon and Garfunkel, Sonny and Cher, etc.) followed.

“Everyday People” is a very personal favorite along with “Family Affair” as a millennial in my early thirties. I have such an appreciation for the oldies, classic rock, and so forth. They don’t make music nowadays like they used to. ✨ Being a former foster child/teen and ultimately adopted opened me up to so many things including various types of music becoming well rounded. Thanks to the many who had a hand in my upbringing, especially my adopted mom who recently not too long ago passed. Whom I miss so deeply & very much, she’ll always be the mom, I never had. 💔❤️‍🩹💔Wishing Sly the absolute continuous best.✨

The greatest band there ever was. They also made the greatest song there ever was; Stand. The lyrics to that song are the greatest lyrics there ever were. Sly dominated the original Woodstock, live and on vinyl. This band always partied hardier than anyone else and with stronger messages than anyone else. The Beatles and Elvis had nothing on this band. Did I mention they were my all time favorites?

One key element that shouldn't be forgotten is Sly's voice. An unmistakable bass-baritone that could be as smooth as flan or crunchy as a bowl of Cheetohs.

Sly & the Family Stone…the most influential group of my youth. At 8 years old they shaped my politics, my attire and my cultural and world perspective. I can’t say enough about the importance of 🎼Everyday People🎼 and how it changed me when I first heard it on the radio. 🎼 There’s a Riot Going on🎼 was the very first album I ever purchased. Yea, they were EVERYTHING!

I wondered what happened to Sly Stone, wonderful artist. Mom played Everyday People all the time. His biracial band a clear influence on Prince. Glad his daughters looked out for this visionary. Look forward to Sly's memoir!

Drugs is what happened to Sly, he doesn't really comunicate well anymore, thats why he declines interviews. The last interview he did when he was living in the camper van he was pretty much incoherent. Really I think his family shields him from the public, its probably for the best. His family is doing a good job protecting him, and his legacy. But I'm sure it was major challenge putting this memoir together. He's still fighting to get some of his royalties, the memoir should get him some badly needed funds. But without him doing interviews and public appearances its going to be harder to sell.

I was just recently thinking about Sly Stone, and wondering how he was doing. So glad to hear that he is doing well and surrounded by his loving family members. Also glad to hear about his new book! He is certainly Blessed!!

One of the musical wonders of the 21st century. Drug fueled yet still able to make classic masterpieces surely only a genius can do that. His influence to other great artists is enormous and even the late rock icon Prince even molded his life and career around Sly Stone.May the illusive Family-man Stone live out the last of his illustrious years on earth in complete and dignified peace.

Only a man of generous spirit could write those songs. Loved Sly and the Family Stone back in the day and now, at 75, I’ll still listen (and dance) to the music now and then. I wish him and his family well.

Sly tried to get it together and tour with the original Family Stone band about 15 years ago. I think maybe one or two actually happened but it soon fell apart. With someone like Sly, you need to set expectations down to the floor. Hope someone puts together a documentary film of the band with all these vintage clips from back in the day. Wish you well Sly!

If you're fortunate to have the revelation, one "graduates" from drugs and gets to experience the clean high of just living.... no coke, no fet, no oxy, no acid, no pot, no alcohol, no vap, no cigs........ It's amazing how much better life is when one is clean and sober. I don't regret my past life, because it led me to this one. I hope Sly is experiencing the same natural high.
