In honor of the composer's centenary next year, the family of Henry Mancini has been recording a tribute album featuring some of the Oscar- and Grammy-winner's most beloved music, performed by some of the most celebrated artists today. Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with flutists James Galway and Lizzo, who are putting their paws on the "Pink Panther" theme; and Michael Bublé, recording the song that Audrey Hepburn made famous, "Moon River."

A week ago my 11 year old granddaughter interviewed me for a class assignment on the 60’s. I had to confess that the music I listened to the most were movie soundtracks. I then told her about Henry Mancini. She looked quizzical, then I started the Pink Panther theme and she joined in. Generations united. Two For The Road is my favorite and the Sweetheart Tree is my ear worm.

As an avid music race car driver, I fell down the Mancini elephant cave decades ago. I would stop at 'Al's Records' on Mcloughlin Blvd. and spend hours going through and playing records on Al's record player. With prices in the 25 cent to $5 range, I ended up with every record Mr. Mancini ever recorded and versions by different artists as well. Music that is part of everything we do in this century came from last century. Keeping these songs alive is not only required but part of our journey and joy as we ride our 'elephants' and travel down the 'rivers' of our blink of fleeting nitro burning funny car time.

Mancini was a great composer but, as this segment pointed out, Moon River was written as a wistful little song, to be sung by an actress with very limited vocal range. It’s a gem, especially Audrey Hepburn’s rendition. Andy Williams’s version was way over the top, although he sounded great. But the orchestrated versions here are like trying to turn a commercial jingle into a symphony.

The new version with Michael Bublé was actually the only arrangement Henry personally wrote in addition to Audrey's version and it is being heard here for the first time. The instrumental section in the middle is taken directly from the scene when Holly Golightly finds "Cat" at the end of the film. There is also a 2nd version of "Moon River" on the new Mancini 100 album called "Moon River/Audrey's Letter". I think you're gonna love it...

My personal favorite of his is "Days of Wine and Roses." It's one of the songs that makes me visibly angry when I hear a rearrangement that completely misunderstands the wistful melancholy of the original and speeds up the tempo; Henry Mancini knew exactly what the soul of the movie was, and I hope future interpretations continue to honor his genius (the Andy Williams and Julie London versions are two of my favorites).

I agree, and I think the word 'legend' is overused/misused these days. And yes, Johnny Mathis was the first singer who immediately popped into my mind when watching this video, too. Nothing against Bublé, but I would have loved to have heard Mathis sing Moon River for this recording. I love Mathis's voice in anything, plus he was so great on the recording of "Dreamsville" with Monica Mancini. Another singer I think could have been great for singing "Moon River" in a beautifully simple way evocative of Audrey Hepburn for this recording is Stacey Kent. Jane Monheit or Sherie Rene Scott would've brought great vocal depth to it, as well.

@@hnc52 Agree, her voice is perfect for "Moon River" - Monheit recorded that song on an album titled Surrender, in 2007, so you might enjoy it. :-)

I got to see Mr. Mathis perform “Moon River” live, and I’m all for him over Michael Buble performing it.

They talked about three compositions in this piece. Great piece but this isn't even the tip of the iceberg of great Mancini compositions.

"Nobody under 50 probably knows who Henry Mancini is, right?" I am so sick of these assumptions that just because you were born after, say, Vietnam, you have no sense of history or are completely ignorant of the past. With the internet, we have no excuse to be ahistorical and there are a lot of us under-50s that know our stuff

Hey, Gregg Field here. SO didn't mean to be insulting for those under 50. Was meant more to be a celebration of Pink Panther being embraced and transcending generations... Thanks for being a Henry fan...
