Swedish-American artist Claes Oldenburg, who created monumental, outsized sculptures of ordinary objects that stirred conversations about pop art in public spaces, has died at age 93. In this "Sunday Morning" report originally broadcast December 18, 1994, host Charles Osgood speaks with Oldenburg and his wife and collaborator, artist Coosje Van Bruggen, about the evolution of "The Shuttlecocks," their sculptures of giant badminton birds outside the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City. Osgood also talks with curators and critics about Oldenburg’s work.

I was just at the Nelson-Atkins two days ago with my children and we took a picture next to one of the shuttlecocks. I remember they were much maligned when they were installed but now they’re a beloved symbol of the city.

This was Charles Osgood’s first show leading up to Christmas ‘94. He looked young and he looked well presented to deliver the news to us, each and every Sunday Morning, for the next 22 years on CBS. Bless you, Charles, and you as well, Claes Oldenburg.

To me that’s contemporary art, large urban pieces created with real sense, and scale. Outdoors for people to admire and enjoy. The more contrasting with architecture, the more impact to the viewer. That’s the idea.

May Claes Oldenburg rest in peace. I like what Claes said, "We believe that play is good for you, and that life in many ways, is a form of serious play." The title should really include Coosje van Bruggen's name as well. She was his collaborator on this piece. I'm from KC, and I love that these Shuttlecocks have become an emblem of the city.

I miss the giant piece of his that used to sit inside of the Dallas Museum of Art. They removed it in 2002 to make room for more gallery space, but I wish they could bring it back, maybe make a room just for it. It is incredible to stand in front of and take in.

At the Art Museum in Denver, we are fortunate to have an Oldenberg piece at the entrance that depicts a dust pan and hand broom, of tremendous scale. My wife and I have a collection of picture of our friends that have come to visit, standing with piece. BTW... if you come to Denver, the Clyfford Still Museum is right next door featuring one of the most important collections of Abstract Expressionist art in the world. Sorry, I am a huge fan of Still.

Great documentary. Thank you very much! I didn't even know there was controversy about it being good arts.

I would like to ask Kansas City Star editorial writer Yael Abouhalkah what he thinks now about calling the shuttlecocks silly back then. In hindsight, it makes Abouhalkah look silly. He seems to be a stick-in-the-mud who is anti fun, boring, and totally lacking in any sense of wonder, awe, or creativity. Abouhalkah was apparently a longtime opinion leader in KC before being fired a few years ago as The Star disintegrated like most American newspapers. Seems odd that a crusader would be anti art. As a native Clevelander, I was perplexed and annoyed by the negative reactive some gave Oldenburg’s Free Stamp which has gradually become a beloved artwork in Cleveland.

Yeah, he says "silly" like it's a bad thing. These people just can't get their heads around anything that isn't a traditional painting, in a frame, hanging on a wall, inside a stuffy old building. Too bad.

OK. For example I decided that I'm gonna hold back the floods on the UK. Because I believe that they can withstand some more temperatures. And yes the rolling blackouts will happen because that is what happens when people over exhaust The Grid. Which they will because they will all be very uncomfortable. Yes I decided they need that because well I'm personally quite enjoying it.

They are silly. Cool but really just decorative. Then a lot of rationalizing. If they made it for a sinGle piece of marble, maybe. But these are no better than a movie studio does. The fact that it is a duo reaffirms it is just a gimmick. A true artist is like a priest. It's a singular journey.

But you are so lucky because that is not going to happen in the United States. It will be a quick heat wave here and I will bring the floods fast. You are lucky because I am telling you and if you block me you will not know what is going to happen next.

Load of nonsense....think about it....people used to make oversized objects to advertise a service...but because he was a " artist"...bad joke...no skill involved.....I hear there is a world's biggest ball of string out in the mid west.....just saying....cowards who dare not speak the truth....and don't give me that stupid line.." O you don't get it.."

OK I'm gonna say it that's ugly. It is truly ugly. It is an EYE sore. Anybody who has this image in their mind wants it to be erased immediately. But because it's so ugly it leaves a lasting impression. What's really ugly about it Is that it will actually still be standing Even when the building Lapses. It is going to outstand the building It's so ugly that I would cheer on the people Applaud The people who tear it down.
