Polls show Americans' trust in the Supreme Court has never been lower, especially in light of ethical lapses that lead observers to question the impartiality of justices. Correspondent David Pogue talks with experts who explain why initiatives at the nation's highest court -- from a code of ethics to term limits to the nuclear option of impeachment -- are unlikely to restore respect and trust in SCOTUS any time soon.

This is exactly what John MCCAIN fought against. In 2010 The Supreme Court Ruled (In Citizens United vs The Federal Election Commission) That CORPORATIONS Are PEOPLE? They Also have the Right Of Freedom Of Speech. And Corporate Dollars were Determined By The SCOTUS Decision To be FREE SPEECH? That decision in 2010 eventually led to ... TRUMP'S Election in 2016 and ... The Current Supreme Court Conservative (?) Majority ... VOTE STRAIGHT BLUE TICKET. Not public officials. Virtually all federal and state employees, including judicial figures, short of Supreme Court Justice level, are prohibited by laws that forbid government employees from accepting gifts beyond those minimal value. @@Lula2979 every branch of govt is ‘political’. It comes from the Greek, ‘polis’, which was the city. The federalist papers make clear an understanding of the nature of power to corrupt, that everything is ‘political’, there’s nothing outside the ‘political’, esp with respect to govt, which is quintessentially political. Perhaps you don’t know what the word means. Perhaps you intend ‘partisan’. the courts were also always partisan. But the nomination of justices was not hyper-partisan until the 1980s with the Bork nomination, where the Democrats broke tradition by stonewalling Bork, humiliating him, and doing everything in their power to block him. This led to an ongoing war of justice nominations that really wasn’t foreseen or intended and is with us today.

@@marvinmartin4692 conservatives face a jury of conservative Americans with regularity in conservative states. That’s what you get from a jury in Waco Texas vs a Manhattan jury. So what’s your point? It might be unpleasant for you to acknowledge but about half of voters wanted Trump in 2016. This isn’t a tyranny of some tiny minority. This is a large chunk of the population. So if about half the Supreme Court justices are conservative, that would be representative. The majority of the supreme court depends on random factors, like the health of justices, when they choose to retire (which, if from health, is pretty up in the air), which presidents are in office and how much sway they happen to have at the time.

$20,000 in the 1960s bought you a home in the rich side of town. My parents paid $12,000 3/1.5 in a middle class neighborhood, my aunt bought a 3/1.5 home in the wealthy neighborhood for $15,000, for $20,000 she could have gotten the nicest home and completely furnished it.

The Supreme Court made the right decision in that case. There was nothing in the constitution guaranteeing abortion so the Court did the only reasonable thing and left it up to the states to decide. If an MD accepted a gift and did not disclose it, there is Hell to pay. Every time they accept a speaking engagement or submit an article to a journal, they are asked if they have any relationship with any medical or pharmaceutical company. If they fail to disclose, not only do they face real consequences, they also face significant repercussions from their professional peers. But judges, of all people, are free to do this!!!!!! Even before this current version of the Court came into existence, there were questions. One of the classics being: Question. Is capital punishment constitutional according to the 8th Amendment? For the longest time, the answer was "yes". Then, some iteration of SCOTUS comes along and says "no". Wait a couple decades and ANOTHER version comes along and says "the previous decision was wrong; it is okay and always was". But the law itself didn't change! How is this possible?

My faith in the US court system dissolved during the whole Bush V. Gore fiasco. Not because of the end result. But because EVERY SINGLE COURT up the chain went with their POLITICAL beliefs, NOT seriously following the law. And it's more and more obvious over time how VERY political the courts are, DESPITE the whole POINT that they are NOT supposed to be about politics, but about the law, including precedent. I was proud to be an American and proud of the US until about 1990, but things have just steadily declined over the ensuing decades, re the behavior, and often criminality, of the US government (of which the courts are a part) system. It SHOULD be beyond approach -- it's more like a growing crime wave, re the trend.
