The band ZZ Top is marking 50 years together, with a new remastered collection of their greatest hits, "Goin' 50." Jim Axlerod talks with guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard (the one without a beard) who are still working hard to make their pedal-to-the-metal, bluesy country rock seem so easy.

This band are so well respected down here in New Zealand. I remember seeing them in 86 with 67,000 other people in a stadium down here......May sound average by US standards but in a country of only 4.5 mill back then , That is a some following.

@@stanleymasterson1135 Yeah big following back then especially after the Eliminator album came out. They played at a speedway stadium at Western Springs in Auckland. I just went and Googled it and apparently the number was actually close to 80 k and it was in 87 not 86. { My memory isnt like it used to be =) } It was the only gig in NZ so people would have come from throughout the country to see them so that might be a the reason why they got so many. The concert was so loud that they were banned from playing there ever again because of the amount of noise complaints from nearby suburbs...Legendary .

I had the pleasure of meeting Billy Gibbons on West 4 street in Manhattan coming out of a Kentucky fried chicken. He was asking directions to St. Marks place. At first, I thought he was a celebrity impersonator and even grabbed him by the shoulder . When I realized it was him and started singing his songs, he reached in his pocket, grabbed a piece of paper and even gave me an autograph without me asking for it.... real classy guy...!!! Real fans don’t bootleg artists music, they buy the albums...!!!

Yeah, what Hendrix supposedly said about Kath has become something of a rock urban legend. Some say he said it, others say he didn't. Still, I grew up to the very first CTA album and all their great follow on albums. Heck, even their Christmas album is pretty dang good. They still tour as much if not more than any other band. They're in my favorite top 3 bands. I really loved them in their TK and Peter Cetera incarnation. Still I've seen them twice in concert. Well worth the scalped price tickets. Terrible though that TK would fall victim to Darwinism just when he was going to go out on his own. Who knows how truly great he could've been.
