Brilliant documentary Cam! Surprising to know that the RKO Pictures logo from 1998 actually dates from 1996, that's something new I learnt. Can't wait to see more great documentaries from you! :-)

Radio-Keith-Orpheum Corp. was a holding company with two main divisions: RKO Radio Pictures, Inc. and various RKO theater subsidiaries. The Radio-Keith-Orpheum logos dated 1928-1930 and 1930-1936 were used by the theater division and can be seen on the marquees of RKO theaters of that era (even Radio City Music Hall had it). The color film bearing it, given the slogan it has, seems intended as a promotional film for the theaters, not for Radio Pictures (as they were then marketed). These logos can also be found in motion picture trade journals of 1929 to the mid-30s. All the movies of that time bore the standard "Radio Pictures" logos.

I agree. The Radio-Keith-Orpheum logos shown from 2:28 - 3:46 are logos for the RKO theater chain, not RKO Radio Pictures. The film shown at 3:24 is probably just a little trailer strip shown at RKO theaters during the Christmas season of that year.

3:25 This would have made more sense if it was Christmas-themed (hence why “Jingle Bells” is playing in the logo)

The music seems to have been added to the video later. The source is the main title of an obscure animated cartoon, "Mendelssohn's Spring Song," released independently in 1930. Here's a link to the cartoon. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtujn7F8p5qtqJs.html

Interesting documentary about RKO and the secrets behind it. There was one thing that you forgot to mention, the RKO logo made an appearance in the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" where they were on stage where the RKO logo appeared in a background. If you have not seen, check out the "Rocky Horror Picture Show".

Awesome documentary you made, CCG88!! Also... you know Brewster Colour? Apparently in the 1940s... Brewster Colour got sued by Technicolour! *"NO JOKE!!"* And lastly, a tire company that owns a movie company business? That's quite an oddity if you ask me, and interesting at the same time!! ;)

I'll add another rare one. I have video copies but it's not on KZfaq. In the late 1940s, RKO started a division in Mexico called "Ramex" which features an eagle on a cactus holding a piece of film (instead of a snake) in its beak over the writing "Distribuición de RKO Radio". They were remakes of RKO films rewritten for the Latin American market featuring Mexican stars and filmed in Mexico. There is almost no information about it, even in books. The TCM website has a good account. There are only about 5-6 movies with this logo.

Fun Fact: RKO Radio Pictures's first on screen logo was the Thunderbolt! Yes, in March 3rd, 1929, RKO made a film called Syncopation which includes the Thunderbolt logo at the start and at the end of the film, I couldn't find much footage but if you search up RKO Radio Pictures Syncopation, you'll probably find at least a few videos of the film.

CCG88, at 6:00, you showed a blue print logo that looks like the logo used from 1929-1956, but was extremley rare. I found this logo on a promotional flyer for 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' (I think I spelled that right) from 1938, but couldn't find anything else (also, it was in Danish).

The Radio-Keith-Orpheum print logos you show are not for RKO films, they are for the Radio-Keith-Orpheum chain of theaters. The logo shown at 3:13 was a Christmastime ad shown at RKO theater chains. It was NOT an RKO studios logo, it was a trailer/advertisement for the RKO circuit of theaters. Your account of the RKO logos is also inaccurate. From 1929 through about 1931, they used the radio tower that spelled out the words "A Radio Picture." Their ending triangle logo featured a tri-split lightning bolt capped by the words "A Radio Picture. "From1931-mid-1936, they used an upgraded version of the same logos. From mid-1936, they changed to the revised "An RKO Radio Picture" radio tower logo, which they used until the end of the studio's life around 1958. The same thing applies to the ending triangle logo, which now read RKO RADIO PICTURES, with a bi-split lightning bolt. I appreciate your additional info, but please get your other facts right.

RKO General, Inc. (General Tire and Rubber Company, Inc./GenCorp, Inc.) was forced out of the broadcasting business by the FCC for illegal improprieties with other companies. WOR-TV, Channel 9 moved across the Hudson River to Secaucus, New Jersey (5 miles west of New York City). It is now WWOR-TV. The station is the absolute worst television station in the United States. It sucks.

There are a few things that are totally wrong in this video. First of all, the logo you show at 2:12 ("A Radio Picture") was used, in two different versions, from 1929-1936. From mid-1936 until the company's collapse in 1958, the logo read "An RKO Radio Picture." There was also a one-time Cinemascope still-painting of the RKO tower logo for one of the last RKO productions, THE NAKED AND THE DEAD. Also, your description of the ending logo is wrong. From 1929-1936, the ending logo read "Radio Pictures" (7:21 in this video) Or see: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g8iCic6cmNrGgJc.html After 1936, they brought in the new RKO RADIO PICTURES end logo, shown in your video at 2:14. Also you are confusing RKO Radio Pictures with the RKO circuit of theaters. For instance, the clip you show at 3:13 is a film that was shown in RKO-owned theaters, but was produced as a Christmas clip for RKO theaters, but not for RKO films. However, your notes notes about RKO/General TV are very interesting.

Open a book. There are 4 excellent books on the history of RKO. RKO is also covered extensively in books covering the beginning of talking pictures. A good source of logo information is the trade journals of the 1930s-1040s, which include the different logos for the movie and theater divisions. I agree with the comments of the original comment.

In addition, Disney bought RKO in 1937 when he produced the Mickey Mouse and “Silly Symphony” cartoons as well as Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto cartoons under RKO along with a series of animated features beginning with “Snow White” all the way to “Peter Pan”. There were in-credit notices on the Disney cartoons that says “Distributed by RKO Radio Pictures” at the beginning and end of every Disney cartoons when it was distributed at the time. In animated features, it has a print logo, but there were so many variants right up until 1954. Prior to Disney’s distribution, RKO also did the Van Beuren cartoons from 1930 right up until 1936 including Tom & Jerry (not to be confused with the MGM cat & Mouse cartoons), “Aesop’s Fables”, “Little King” and the “Rainbow Parade” cartoons, the first color cartoon series from Van Beuren from 1934 through 1936 where it also has the RKO in-credit notice at the very beginning. Sometimes, the Radio Pictures logo appeared on some Van Beuren cartoons. Steve Stanchfield has posted some rare opening and closings to many of the early “Rainbow Parade” cartoons on his channel. It even has an in-credit notice that says “RKO Radio Pictures Presents” or “Radio Pictures Presents” on there.
