That is a really good representation of a common detail. This will be very useful to me. Thanks!

Phenomenal work Eric! The sign looks amazing. Hats off to you for still being able to do this type of N scale scratch building without a lighted magnifying lamp ( oh to have young eyes again…) Have a great week! Scott

Thanks Scott! The beauty of video is I didn’t include the shots where I used mine ;).

That is excellent. I have also seen old signs as I am sure you have as well. With one side, or even a piece of the old sign still on it. Like Sealtest Ice Cream, ripped in half. Weathered, faded, a link to the past for sure. Outstanding work, love your posts.

Love that suggestion Bruce thank you! Great way to add a little something more to these.

Scratch building comes with practice and patience, and continuing on thru failures. If that was your first try at building it , Hats off. In one of your videos you were talking about not happy with using tunnels to hide the curves at the end of the layout. Maybe you have thought of this but I used buildings creating a canyon where you loose the train. Cool vid will have to try and make one for my East St Louis area on my lower level. I think Boomer would enjoy this.

This was my first crack at it. Good practice for sure, lots learned on the way. some tall industrial buildings could be a doable option as a tunnel replacement that would be prototypical for the area, thank you for the suggestion!! The layout will be around for a good while, so lots of time to plan upgrades. I think a thumbs up from Boomer would be like winning an Emmy.

Looks great! More extreme detailing! Another variant, I just passed a vacant business today that still had the sign on just one side. Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays Eric!

Thank you Chris, have a great holiday season as well! The variant you mention is actually next on my build list - I'll be fabricating a couple of those to contain nano LEDs for illuminating a couple of custom-decaled signs. That should be a fun video (and a real test of my still somewhat limited skill set 😬😄)

Your set is maybe limited, but not your skill and steady hands. Now you need a Santa Claus somewhere on the layout to be with your family. An happy one and more than the best for 2024.

Well done. My favourite part of the hobby is scratch building. Interesting to see how a scientific mind goes about it as opposed to a plodder like me. By the way I'm going to steal your sing idea.

Go for it! 'Stealing' (aka inspiration) is a part of the hobby for sure and hope you have a great result!

There's a vendor at the flea market at Rosemont, he has tiny tiny tweezers, forceps and files; and alot of my cash 😁 Also, taping down a piece of painters tape, sticky side up, can be a great help holding small parts.
@ChicagoCrossingRR6 ай бұрын
Good to know! I’ll have to see what’s available like that online or in my area (located in mountain west these days)

@ChicagoCrossingRR ahh, sorry, just started watching your channel so I missed that part.

@@darinschneider8192 oh no worries, I never mentioned where I'm actually located in my videos, it's never been particularly important to do so :). In any case, I'm very intrigued by the painter tape option you mention. These are tiny pieces s and that seems like a good solution. Maybe that'll lower my blood pressure when I'm doing these dumb sorts of highly miniaturized experiments, in which case thanks for adding a few years back to my lifespan.

@ChicagoCrossingRR the painters tape trick comes with a different set of frustrations 😉 but I couldn't replace couplers without it. Give it a try!

Next time, get another right make thing to push in against the two pieces forming the initial “L” to help hold it in place as you glue. Not exactly a clamp but probably good enough
@ChicagoCrossingRR7 ай бұрын
Thanks Philip - I'd used the triangle initially for that purpose and found it shifted the pieces around preventing gluing. It's worth having another shot with that, and I have some ideas about making a quick jig so these stay in place more readily.
