Your content is very informative, straight to the point, and you seem like such a no BS kind of guy. A lot of your content is so relative to us regular folks. Soooo I thank you for that. Thought your coverage of the two formats (CD Player vs. CD Transport) was great. Helpful, that. I've had an odd experience on this very point. I bought the Emotiva ERC4 CD Transport. This puppy can connected as a "Transport" (using digital outputs) or an Analogue connection (using the RCA outputs). I did an AB between the two kinds of connections. SUPRISE! => I thought the Transport connection would be the best way to go. Nahh, not so much, didn't happen! CD's really sounded better when I played them through the analogue connection (connecting my ERC4 as a "CD Player") than when I played them using the ERC4 as a "Transport". Maybe the DAC I used to connect it as a Transport was not as good as the analogue circuitry that comes into play when used as a "CD Player". Go figure! What did I learn? I learned that a CD Player CAN sound better than a CD Transport, and that the quality of sound you get from a CD Transport is to some degree depends on the DAC you use. Also, I learned that "there is no place like home"...

Excellent A/B comparison! It really all comes down to the DAC. Of course build quality and extra features will have some effect to a certain degree, but not as much as using a DAC that suits your listening style. For example, I use the Denafrips Ares II which in my experience is very nice, mellow and warm. It gives the music a very smooth sound. In comparison to other DACs which can be a bit cold and lifeless. I am so glad you found that sonic sweet spot you are happy with! Happy listening!

The advantages of keeping this separate, apart from better sound and upgrade ability, is if the transport fails, you don’t need a new DAC.

I started with a 1990 Luxman DZ-112 CD player with a digital coaxial out to a Cambridge Audio DAC Magic 100. Worked very well. I sold both in 2021 and bought an Audiolab 6000cdt (one of your recommended) CD transport connected to a Mytek Brooklyn DAC+ via a coaxial cable from Blue Jeans cables. Both products are well reviewed for their price categories. I just got into SACDs about a month ago so I bought a 2008 Sony scd-CE595 5-disc changer from one of my service techs I use. I bought a glass fiber Toslink cable to connect it to my new DAC to play CDs and connected RCAs straight to my Luxman preamp to play SACDs/hybrids.

DDC and DAC are my new audio adventure after 30+ years in audio gear hobby. If you truly love music, especially in digital CDs, it's worth researching. You don't have to spend tons of money. Still using the Marantz CD56 I bought new in 1984 for £250! Cheap on the outside, but sweet on the inside with the classic Philips CDM2 swing-arm transport and a pair of TDA1541 DAC chips. Don't be fooled by the flimsy look and feel - never been serviced, yet it just keeps on truckin' after 38 years of regular use. None of the other CD players I've tried can touch it for bottom-end definition. Error correction is excellent, too. Best of all, being a bit of an ugly duckling means the used prices of CD56s are usually really low.

Hi Michael, wanted to know your thoughts on buying a new cd transport say an Audiolab 6000 vs a well cared for Theta Carmen II. Found one for a very good price, but the 20+yrs has me hesitating. Theta was one of those brands I used to drool over back in the day(like Krell and the like). Would a higher end transport from back then even compete with a decent modern one.

It's all down to whether the manufacturer dealt with the limitations of SPDIF / jitter of Trans / Dac connection or whether the mechanical noise of the motor / EM noise of power supplies was isolated from the DAC circuitry in a one-box CD player. Both can work if done right. Trans / Dacs have the highest performance ceiling but the expense is higher, although having the chance to upgrade the transport and DAC independently is nice. Never use a CD player as a transport except as a short-term measure. The worst of both worlds.

Well I bought a CD player, because well I know what I want, and any sort of Sonic gains caused by excluding the DAC inside the chassis I could care less. I like the versatility of a CD player, and the fact that I can use it as a CD player and I can also hook it up to my ever-growing cornucopia of digital converters, and it'll allow me to do both. Matter of fact I went even one better and I got an NAD CD player, specifically because it had both a coax and an optical, that way I didn't have to be locked in to simply using a coax for a digital out

The only drawback of using CDT + external DAC is I would have to give up SACD but I do have a lot of them, this is something I don't want to give up at this moment but at the same time, I've upgraded my integrated AMP lately and started to think if I should upgrade my CD player into 2 separated units, by doing so, I could be able to use a better DAC together with my streamer Aries G1. This is what stops me thinking of an upgrade it now

Why not just use a basic CD player and digital out to your DAC. The CD player just has to read data from the disc, period. This data is error corrected if any errors are present, that's the whole point of a CD system. Paying extra cash for a fancy expensive CD transport is just nuts.

Returning it for now. Another classic have a Pioneer Elite DV-09 DVD Player I am going to use for now using digital output. If the CD player has a digital out, it can be used as a transport but it's only a stop-gap solution. Read Paul Rigby's The Audiophile Man's review of the Audiolab 6000CDT if you want a good overview of why. If you want the best from your DAC, use a dedicated transport.

However I still struggle to understand - which option will provide better quality: - a player AXC35 connected via RCA analog to amp? or - AXC35 connected via Coaxial to DacMagic and then to amp (is it worth paying extra for DacMagic 100 or 200M)? This means that i don’t need a fancy CD player as long it has a digital output? I can connect it to an amp that can do the DAC job via coaxial. In these conditions a $50 player can do almost the same as a $700 one?...
@mykandrew
@mykandrew 2 жыл бұрын
Well depends on how it's built. There are several factors to take into consideration however, theoretically yes the $50 transport could give you comparable sound. The advantage you get from a higher end transport are better parts, and a digital output with less noise and jitter. However whether those things are actually audible is yet to be seen. Mainly the nicer ones just look pretty lol 😆

Compared to the DV8300! 😉 Depending on the DAC you choose, I expect the difference with the CD52 to be more noticeable.

I actually heard a serious difference between my Audiolab transport and a Cyrus T going to a Chord Hugo 2. The Cyrus was better. But it stopped working in my case and the local distributor took it back but tried to tell me there was nothing wrong with it. I ended up going "down" to the Audiolab, which is also fine, but for some reason less good with bass nuance. However, that said, there is a big difference between my Audiolab plugged into my Chord Mojo vs my Chord Hugo 2 - as there should be, given a $2000 difference in price. The Audiolab transport with the Hugo2 is probably better than a $3000 CD player - but I'm not actually sure about that. I actually kind of wish I had one to try. Any suggestions for a sub-$3000 CD player that sounds great?

Can u tell us your experience if a cd transport sounds better than a dvd transport? What about FIFO buffer (Ram based ) to eliminate jitter
@mykandrew
@mykandrew 2 жыл бұрын
I did a video awhile back about an expensive CD Transport and a cheap dvd player. I found the CD Transport to have different sound signatures and sound better all around. Now in the world of science, it should have sounded exactly the same. Which proves that a device that is built cheaply, will have limitations when attempting to dispell jitter, vibrations or noise from the power supply. Now as far as the buffer goes, all CD Players should have one and from what I have read doesnt have as much of an impact on jitter like lets say the master clock. However this is a highly debatable topic in the audio world. Thanks for watching the video and I hope you subscribe to the channel so we can chat more about audio!

I don’t like buying “cheap” or “expensive” equipment, I’m more of a midrange kinda person lol. My concern is always durability. I don’t want something breaking on me 1 year after purchase but unfortunately we live in times now that build quality isn’t something manufacturers go for. I’m a huge movie guy so I went ahead and went and bought the Panasonic ub9000 player. It’s build like a tank, something that should last a very long time. It cost $1200 instead of your typical $300 players. So what happens? This $1200 player fails after just 8 months of barely any use and with Panasonics horrible warranty I had to pay $200 on top of the already $1200 to get it repaired. I guess my thing is be careful spending so much money on “premium” equipment. Things are no longer made to last you 30,20 or even 10 years.

Thank you for watching the video! To answer your question, you can go either way. I mean, the part where you explain the connectivity aspect of each one is ok, but too little information regarding the situation where I would use one or the other. One can be connected directly to speakers, the other needs like a bunch of stuff that I don't know too much about but still I would love to learn more. You could use these moments in your vids where you bring a subject and then explain a little bit more about it! I was hesitase and had my doubts by simply noticing that the video is only 6+ minutes long! can one rally explain in detail those differences in such small amount of time? and again, please, don't get me wrong... your vids are cool and different, but if you want to teach others, don't waste the opportunity to make new viewers feel interested in a subject they don't really know too much about, and don't even think of letting them go by telling them: Go and search the web... Nor "ask" in the comments!... you know how much questions can be brought to the table and be answered just by creating a more detailed video instead of making people get glued to a comment section? I mean, I'm here on youtube and watching YOUR vids to learn, not to get confused and feel that not even the basic stuff was shared. If you're gonna give 1/4 relevant info and the rest is techy stuff not all people will understand right away and eventually leave and look for answers in other channels, which, in a way can be daunting. Thnx!

Hey Chev, I appreciate the feedback. The last thing I want is for my audience to leave confused after watching one of my videos. The concept of choosing a CD Transport or CD Player is simple and complicated at the same time so I tried my best to pack what I could into a video that could very well be expanded upon. To answer your question and give you my sincere and honest advice, I would do a CD Player that has a great analog output stage. This means the engineer spent time designing and executing the Digital to Analog Converter and spent a lot of time creating a really nice output to your amplifier or preamplifier. The advantage here is that most, if not all new CD Players come natively with a Digital Output (Coax/Optical). This means if you would like to use it as a transport with an external Digital to Analog Converter you absolutely can. It plays both roles of being a CD Player and a CD Transport. Buying only a CD Transport eliminates the RCA output altogether and you would NEED an external Digital to Analog converter. I ask that people turn to the comments for questions so that way I can answer them properly and tailor fit the response to the particular viewers' specific questions. It would be a one-hour video if I had covered every different angle and property of these two devices. Please feel free to email me anytime with questions as well, as I am always open to helping people grow in this hobby. It's why I do this. Here is my email if you have any further questions or if I could be of any help with putting together your system. mike@audioarkitekts.com Thanks for watching the video and for your feedback. I always take constructive criticism and try and apply it to future videos to help myself grow as a KZfaqr and educator.

I use Sony X800 Blueray player it has no analog output so I don't understand why they don't market it as a Transport. HDMI works fine even for SACD

Better is streaming nowadays as you can get much higher data rate than CD and completely avoid errors and jitter. There is no reason for streaming to be inferior if the data streamed is identical to the CD. Of course nobody making business out of selling old CD drives designed decades ago in new enclosures will admit to this. Data is data and audio is no different than video, games, documents and so on…in fact the least sensitive to quality of data is music but why bother with scratches CDs when you can get access to around 100 million tracks streamed lossless in CD quality or better and make your personalized playlists and enjoy instant playback. Am I the only one who only likes one or few tracks on an album? If you know of a track that sounds better on CD, let me know which track and which streaming service you compared it on.

You are incorrect. At the highest level, CD transports beat streamers.
@ThinkingBetter
@ThinkingBetter 17 күн бұрын
@@Coneman3 No, you got that totally wrong. CD transports are limited to playback of CD media, which contains up to 700MB of data that is prone to errors due to scratches. Nowadays we can stream tracks up to 192kHz 24 bits PCM lossless error-free FLAC from popular streaming service (I use Amazon Music Unlimited). A CD can hold only TEN MINUTES of such quality digital audio data, if it was even supported by your transport. But it is not! So ABSOLUTELY, a CD transport is at this point INFERIOR to status quo of the leading streaming services on the highest quality digital audio support. Of course any company selling your overpriced CD transports will not tell you this fact.

You are wrong best audio is CD or vinyl, streaming is inherently inferior. Streamers limit quality just like a cd transport, but cd transport has the data directly. Can’t just quote specs and say it’s superior.
@ThinkingBetter

@@Coneman3 Hey, I actually understand how it works. When you stream music online, it comes from hard disk drives in some huge datacenter owned by Google, Amazon and others. Any modern datacenter needs to support error-free data to customers and it doesn't matter if it's a website, online banking, government data, company data, Netflix, Apple Music or whatever service. So when I click on, let's say, "Toto, Africa" and the stream is 192kHz 24 bits, I can trust that my DAC gets the exact data stored in the datacenter with zero errors. As the internet infrastructure today is supporting much higher bandwidth than what is needed for music, you do not need to worry about getting the data in time for the DAC to play it, unless you have some outdated internet connection. There is no such thing as "has the data directly". I can appreciate some companies want to make a business out of selling a CD player without DAC and call it "Transport", but reality is that streaming has overtaken the CD media on bandwidth and data integrity. Now, in all fairness, there is no guarantee that the files themselves stored in a datacenter aren't in some cases changed e.g. some track might be compressed because someone think he can make more money from more compression when played on cheap audio gear. While I think this is almost like a crime, I could be concerned there are such cases.

@@Coneman3 Gosh no. Some years ago I would have agreed, but nowadays streaming is vastly superior with higher bandwidth and error-free transfer. Streaming can easily beat a CD transport today. Hey, trust me, I work in audio R&D and I am not trying to sell you anything.
