Yeah that is awesome. I am more thinking about Bluetooth DACs though. Bluetooth headphones to me aren't really limited by the Bluetooth codec, but rather by the fact that the receiver, DAC, amp and battery need to be built into the headphone. Meaning: the money you spend goes to 4 parts now instead of one (oversimplified, I know). Also, space wise this just isn't ideal. As time progresses I do expect for this to change. As DAC's and amps get smaller and cheaper, these limitations will disappear and the upside (DSP and tuning) will remain. Oh bright the future will be

I have no doubt that bluetooth will become lossless. I have no doubt for some years now. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. What I don't understand is all the fuss about bluetooth not being lossless currently and, usually people using it, are streaming music from a service that doesn't deliver lossless. On top of that, people using bluetooth are usually in a noisy environment (bus, train, etc). So I don't see the reason to complain. As for audiophiles, if you want to hear music with great fidelity, you don't hear it in a train (wired or wireless), you hear it at home where you can minimize exterior disturbances. Disclaimer: I have the Sony WM-1000XM2 and I use LDAC. I'm waiting for bluetooth to go lossless to upgrade my headphones. However, I don't really have complaints about it. If I want music fidelity, I need to be at home in a controlled environment to really enjoy it and for that we have cables and comfortable chairs and sofas!
@nicholasgilbert4227
@nicholasgilbert4227 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe it wont sound as good as a dedicated home setup, but who said it needs to compete with one, to still be considered great fidelity. hey there, I think I'll start with an extremely brief explanation of fidelity. Bit rate isn't fidelity. fidelity is a way of explaining somethings reproduced accuracy to a source. EQ and dynamic range also play roles in audio fidelity. Also, a little critical thinking would lead you to the conclusion that the only people asking for lossless are people people who know what lossless is, such as myself who stream lossless. while your statement about that was quite presumptuous, it only speaks for the ones who don't care anyway and generalizes the rest of us under that same umbrella. finally regarding that may I ask who's actually "complaining", as you said? on top of that audio fidelity isn't as simple as great at home and shit elsewhere, only a sith deals in absolutes, come on now. Also if you're not an audiophile that's perfectly fine, if you don't understand us that's fine too... Just ask us, don't speak for us. What about people buying sports cars? most people get absolutely zero real world advantages from it. Same with buying nike airs, who can truly justify buying proper sports trainers beyond the small nuances that THEY personally perceive. It's perfectly reasonable to want something just just a little better. maybe you accept you wont get that $20,000 audio experience when on a train, but don't want to settle for normal headphones, maybe even something just a little bit better is satisfying, maybe they want even more to satiate the desire, hence this new (to be) standard. One can hear GREAT fidelity (wired or wireless) almost anywhere, particularly with ANC lowering the effects of your aforementioned noisy environments. also, what about those working in offices, study halls, maybe a dorm room, maybe at home because dad's using the main system (my kids problem lol) Maybe it wont sound as good as a dedicated home setup, but who said it needs to compete with one to be considered great fidelity..? plus it will CERTAINLY will sound better than normal/cheaper earbuds/headphones regardless of your environment.

I'm still rather skeptical about aptX L. Let me give a few points, just for the sake of food for thought. 1. Scalability. We do know how LDAC scales, for example. But what about aptXL? What steps are there? At which step does it switch from more aggressive compression to actual lossy encoding (if, of course, it does utilize compression at any step below 1000 kbps). 2. Usability. My gf has a pair of XM3s and I played around with it a few years back. I managed to turn off LDAC scalability and force 990 kbps. And you know what? Put your phone in your pocket, and the audio will stutter. Not much, but all you need is start walking, or put the phone in your BACK pocket for some stutters noticable and irritating enough to drop the idea. That leaves sitting still with your phone on a desk with no RF or obstacles in between. I'm not sure what's the benefit of wireless headphones in this case. 😅
@lolerie
@lolerie 2 жыл бұрын
2. Yeah, you can do it using sony Headphoned app by writing force 990 in firmware. Dev. setting do not work for me. But, I am afraid for me it works very good, but of course much much worse than with no forcing it. Nevertheless, I am afraid you gf phone has to have bad bluetooth somehow, maybe not a Samsung flagman? Dunno.

192 kbps is indistinguishable from CD for most persons. Streaming services like Amazon Music seem to use much lower encoding and also compress the dynamics of the music stream. Amazon Music sounds terrible in many cases even on highest quality setting.

Can the USB Audio Player Pro do bitperfect to bluetooth output to Sony XM3 Loselessly? Currently I've enabled Bluetooth to go through Internal HiRes Audio Chip on my One PLus 7 Pro, and from there it goes through bitperfect direct to my XM3. Is is still considered Lossy? UAPP has an option to"Use with Bluetooth output" - "Although BT does not use the HiRes chip, audio may arrive cleaner before it is sent to the BT receiver". And in my case it does sound way better than just Android Audio. it's like 30% better.

Couldn't agree more about the Sony headphones John. One point to make: if anyone wonders what DSP is doing, try running them from a cable with the amplifiers switched off (yes it works!). Sounds very broken. The big issue in bluetooth for me as an audio enthusiast isn't bitrate but difficulty enabling the codecs available. On my Android phone with Sony WH headphones it defaulted originally to APTX, now to LDHC but always at the lowest rate of 330. To get APTX HD takes developer mode, select 24bit/96, select APTX HD. What a pain. How can the average consumer be expected to go through that? Robin2

Thumps from lifts. I'm 100 feet from a lift motor room, my thump was a large change in the local magnetic field which induced all sorts of wonderful low frequency currents in my equipment when the lift stopped. I believe there is a large solenoid brake on the flywheel so as to stop the lift to the mil at the floor required.

John, this is a topic I've been fascinated by the last 8 years or so. Pre pandemic I'd travel over 100k miles a year by plane and getting lost in music was always critical to making travel more pleasant. I've owned a bunch of BT headphones and in ear monitors from the usual suspects over the years. I've found the B&W Pi7s and the Sony WF 1000XM4s to be best for the travel use case. With the B&W having the added benefit of being able to plug in the charging case via a USB-C to 3.5mm cable which allows BT 5.0 connection to the planes IFE or other 3.5mm source. And the SQ of the B&W Pi7 is very good.

I have a question regarding the bitrate. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe if the maximum supported bitrate of aptX lossless is 1mbps that it still falls about 400kbps lower than the CD quality bitrate? Therefore, this new codec is still lossy. Compared to LDAC which is topped at 990 kbps aptX lossless goes only 10kbps higher to 1000kbps. I might be wrong but would like a little clarification. Nevertheless, I’ve always loved your videos and this is no exception so it gets a thumbs up 👍

The answer to this is lossless compression. Uncompressed CD quality is 1411 Kbps as you said. But uncompressed is not exactly the same as lossless, and vice versa compressed does not necessarily mean lossy. A good example is a FLAC file. It is lossless, meaning it retains bit-perfect information ofthe source, yet it is compressed to roughly half the size of equivalent WAV files. The headphones would need an extra step to do the decompression of the AptX Lossless data stream, but compressing audio losslessly to roughly 70% of bitrate (1411 -> 1000 Kbps) is possible without much of a hussle.

Wait wait wait, I don't get it. How can it be LOSSLESS when it does only 1000 kbps at best? LDAC can do 990 kbps and it is not considered CD quality which is 1400kbps. How can a codec with a maximum bandwidth of just 10 kbps more than LDAC be considered lossless? What happens with the 400 kbps that is needed to be considered CD quality? I am confused. On top of that, the overall quality of the sound coming out of the headphones is more about the amplification and driver design than about just less than 1% more bandwidth and I still believe that even if BT is one day capable of 1.4 Mbps the design issues of having to be closed back and cramming the electronics in such a small space cannot compete with the quality of separate components in this case. It is not the same as with loudspeakers where active ones can sound as good as any other configuration since there is more space to work with inside the speakers (proportional to the size of amplification gear) than you have in the headphones...
@Uygkuyfkutfkytfkutfv
@Uygkuyfkutfkytfkutfv 2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean separate components as in portable ones, like headphone amps and/or DACs? These are pretty niche purchases and I’m sure don’t factor in to what the average audiophile wishes to worry about for their commuting set-up. We know that passive, wired IEMs can easily outperform BT headphones when fed by an ultra-compact DAC, so I’m not sure your argument holds up where over-ear headphones are concerned; space is not an issue. If you mean separate components as in home hifi, then you’re ruling out portable listening entirely - which is a big part of how a lot of us want to listen to our music.

CDs didn't use any compression at all. This is going to use lossless compression. > What happens with the 400 kbps that is needed to be considered CD quality? While this is technically possible, the only way it would happen is if you played random bits instead of music. Anything that we would consider music would be far enough away from random bits that compression will work fine.

Actually, the final ”holy grail” of bluetooth is not lossless audio, but uncompressed audio. Why? Because when we get that stable 1400kbps uncompressed signal, we can skip compression latency, and suddenly games and productivity is possible without lag. Until that barrier is beaten, I’m not spending hundreds in high quality bluetooth cans, but will suffer with cheap ones instead. It’s crazy how slow bluetooth is evolving, meanwhile wifi 7 is promising thunderbolt 3 speeds. Cmon!

Bluetooth inherently would still have some limitations like signal interference, impedance, drops, etc. If this new codec is adaptive the bandwidth might drop down if you’re in a congested area - so no way of really knowing if you’re getting lossless or not. Wired is still so much easier IMO - I’d carry my $9 lightning adapter instead of going wireless. Also iOS would never implement this till they make a proprietary wireless lossless codec and complementary chips that go in the new AirPods.

I use my BT headphones primarily when I listen to music away from home in environments where there is a lot of ambient noise. When I use them at home it's for non critical listening. For me the most important feature is noise cancellation otherwise I can't hear the important nuances in music anyways. Using noise cancellation in combination with LDAC, I'm fairly happy with my Sony WH-1000xm3 headphones. But I don't expect to experience critical listening with such a setup as the noise cancellation is going to compromise the audio quality anyways. For critical listening away from home I prefer to use my wired IEMs for their portability.

I only use headphones (no speakers) and so I love this type of content. I have a fixed headphone rig at home and I use various types of headphones (including wireless) when travelling. For me I don't think a lossless codec will make much difference. Wireless headphones are convenient but I have still not found a pair of wireless headphones that sound as good as a wired pair as they try to be too multi-functional (ANC, phone calls, track skipping, volume control etc). When a manufacturer decides to make a pair of wireless headphones with just sound quality in mind and no another functions, then that will be a game changer. As an experiment (and possible future KZfaq content) rip a track to FLAC and play on your wireless headphones. Then make a lossy rip (128 / 256) of the same track an play it through your favourite phone / DAC / IEM combination. Which one sounds better to you? Keep up the great content.

It positions iPhone as a really high end product and seems to focus a lot on screen and camera quality but seems to make no attempt whatsoever to elevate the audio experience beyond basic AAC, not even AptX HD. I can’t say I’m optimistic for the future either. Knowing Apple if it does do a lossless codec it will be proprietary in an attempt to force people to buy its headphones & earbuds. Grrrrrrr.

It likely depends on the hardware at each end. In my experience I've only ever once had drop out problems when I had to change LDAC settings. This occurred on a plane with many other people using Bluetooth devices and it's only one of many other flights without issues. I always use quality preferred on LDAC which I believe forces 990kbps connection. My Xperia XZ1 Compact is mainly the source but I also use LDAC on my Samsung Tab S5E and Tab S7 plus. They all work fine on 990 settings streaming to my Sony WH-1000XM2' headphones and my IFI Zen Blue streamers that are LDAC capable. I have one Zen blue in my system at home and one at work. I actually have been surprised how far out into the yard at work the connection remains stable. I've always found Bluetooth was noticeably inferior to playing a cd in my home set-up. Streaming over WIFI to a Chromecast audio even didn't measure up to playing a cd in my system. Since using LDAC via the IFI Zen Blue in my system I can't pick a difference any more. My music is stored on sd cards on my Android devices as FLAC files that are mostly 16 bit 44.1khz quality with some 24 bit 96khz files.

In addition to lossless we also need a way to let only music through so system sounds don’t go to the Bluetooth device. That’s the way AirPlay works, you don’t cast all sounds, just the one app. Let the other sounds play through the speaker in the device. There is WiFi in some cars now, maybe they could include AirPlay in the infotainment system so I could just cast to it. A small battery powered WiFi headphone amp could also do that. I don't think Bluetooth will be good until a future version with so much bandwidth that even lossless compression is not needed.

Personally, I would recommend Grado headphones, probably an SR-60/80x since those are one of if not the best sounding entry-level open-back headphones. I saw recently that Audio Technica just re-release their BT version of MX-50 with an AK4331 DAC inside it iirc. Don't know if this is old news since my local audio store only start selling those like a week ago, but I assume those should sound better or at least perform better than some BT headphone with an unknown DAC for lossless wireless audio whenever they actually come.

Regarding support for current phones, Qualcomm state Aptx lossless will work on platforms which use Snapdragon Sound, this is currently supported on the Snapdragon 888 chip which is seen in current flagships such as the Galaxy S21 and Xiaomi Mi 11 etc. So I'm assuming Aptx lossless will be supported on the phones that currently use the 888 chip and all new Snapdragon chips beyond 888.

Hi I have a question ! I need to buy brand new headphones and can’t wait until next year to get adaptive aptx lossless . I have three options based on my budget 1- Focal listen wireless 2- Akg k371 bt 3- bowers wikilns px7 I could only try Focal headphones the sound was acceptable but it wasn’t so comfortable to wear them for couple of hours. It is also supporting aptx and aptx hd but Akg k371 bt doesn’t support high res codecs. Is it really important for me who works inside a room and listen only to music to buy headphones with aptx ? Any idea which is best among these three ? I also tried sony wh1000xm3,4 but sound was too bassy for me. Please help me to make a good decision. I only care about high sensitivity (loudness ) and neutral sound. I have wired shure srh 440 headphones and sound is excellent.

John, side question regarding the Sony WH-1000XM3's . . . how do they compare to the B & W PX7's? I have a set of B & W Wireless P7's , so the previous generation, and I find them a little hard on the ears over extended periods, both in their fit (I wear glasses so that doesn't help) and in their sound signature. To my ears they're a bit too focussed on the highs.

I gave him my used M50X (about 150 dollars) headphones.. and let him test lossy 320 vs lossless on the ifi hipdac (another 150 and if space matters more you can replace this with a dragonfly), despite in an ABX test he was 2nd guessing and answered it right only about 50-70 percent of the time.. He knew which one he preferred (lossless).. and ESPECIALLY noticed it on the song he choseds drum solo

I finally bought the Bose QC35 used for around 100€ few months ago and was blown away how good the sound actually is (really good frequency response), even with it´s limited SBC (345kbps) connection. In recent years the whole DAC business has grown so rapidly, I assume the same thing will happen with these bluetooth headphones, people buying the newest ESS Sabre DAC/DSP headphones with Aptx Lossless codecs. Oh, right.. you also forgot to mention Aptx LL for Low Latency which I assume would be great for Bluetooth Gaming.

I think we worry too much about bit rates, the only thing important is that we like the sound produced. I have some Mpow earphones that support AptxHD and sound terrible and some Soundcore earphones that link with AAC on my android phone (LG V40) and sound great. In my mind the quality of the product and implimentation is the key. As a side note Cd bit rate is 1411Kbps, Aptx adaptve adaptive LL HD + pro super is 1000Kbps & LDAC 990 at its highestest so I cant see how that is lossless but only potentially audiably transparent........may be :)

A step in the right direction, but 4,000 kbps is where HD lossless really starts for properly recorded source material. 16bit 44.1 kbps is a stepping stone, and is not really audibly different to most people while non-upsampled 48 kbps at 24 bits recorded properly begins to show a significant difference of well recorded material on good listening chains.
