In this video I attach an external AppleCD 300e Plus CD-ROM drive to one of my Amiga 3000 computers. A LOT more info can be found in an article version here: www.amigalove.com/viewtopic.p...
In the video I explain the software I used to get it running, and use it to its fullest potential. MODs, Fred Fish CDs, Music CDs - it's a beautiful world. If only Commodore had fully embraced CD-ROM tech with its computer line early on.

Great video. I bought an external MediaVision CDR-MV2 (it came with Amiga mountlist entries for the scsi.device) for my A2500 in the mid-90s. Its a top loader and probably even 1X, still it gave me access to the Fred Frozen Fish 1994 CD that motivated me to make the jump. In the past few years I used it, and via Ethernet shared the device to a second '030 Amiga and install CD based software.

Good lord, that’s a lot more feature-filled than my 1MB A500 well, I’m only 16. Gotta get the funds to upgrade it somehow. It’s wild how people were able to use a 512KB-1MB computer with a single floppy drive and no OS in ROM or hard disk back in the late 80s-early 90s as their main PC

Thanks a lot, Chris. That really means a lot to me coming from an Amiga Guru like yourself. I decided to change up my format recently. With a job/kids it means I might only drop 1 video a month (or even 5-6 weeks), but at the end of the day I'm happier with the end result. KZfaq doesn't like it because I don't generate enough content on a timetable they prefer (like, once a week). But that just means my videos likely won't serve ads any time soon, which is fine by me and viewers I'm sure! Thanks for watching!!

OS3.1 and 3.1 rom (Amigaos 3.0 comes with it also,but it was broken)comes with scsi cd drivers by default. You just copy CD0 from Devs:Storage to Devs:Dosdrivers and then edit the icon information for scsi device and cdrom unit,and cdrom is up and running. its amazing most people still don't know this. A better solution and easy for both scsi and atape is ASIMcdfs 3.10,its commercial but easy to find and has way many features including cdtv emulation and such. If you get a burner on the Amiga,you can also burn cd's on amiga with Makecd,Fryingpan,MasterISO,Burnit.

I also burned all my own CD.s with Fred fish and cover disc compliations. Also converted clipart and clipsound PC discs over. You could get IFF clipart back then. Sold the lot in early 2000's and regret it now. started with a new A1200, but no rev 6 060 just a poo EC060. However I do have a 44 to 40 pin IDE cable on the way to get my old IDE CD Roms tested out.

I really think that both Atari and Commodore owe their demise to not pushing the CD. In Atari’s case, the STe should have had an optional CD drive, with the Falcon coming with one as standard. In the case of Commodore, the A1200 should have had a CD drive accessory, with subsequent models having one built in. I think the “killer app” for the PC, what really cemented Windows as the de facto standard, was Encarta. Encarta was the Trojan horse that got Windows PCs into every home, under the pretext of the kids using it for schoolwork. Sure, there were forces at work in the market before 1995 that had DOS/Windows squarely on track to hold a strong position for the foreseeable future, but Encarta was, in my opinion, what secured the monoculture, and drove rival computers to their ends. The reason I put so much importance on Encarta, here, is because of Atari and Commodore’s existing install base. Across Europe and Australia, they were far more common computers. Kids already had them for games, they could be used for schoolwork, and the parents could use them for more serious stuff (even if they might have needed a 286 emulator board to bring work home, or something). If Atari and/or Commodore had developed a reputation as being good for education, they’d have held that position on every kid’s desk.
@AmigaLove
@AmigaLove 3 жыл бұрын
They kinda tried with the CDTV, but not only did C= not know how to market and sell it, neither did the salespeople in the shops (at least in the US that was true). At least, not for that price. Your thought on Encarta in an intriguing one indeed. Thanks for watching!

@@AmigaLove I think the problem with the CDTV was the core concept. They were pushing it as a game console that had an A1200 at its heart. Instead of “look at the FMV games and CD audio you can have”, they should have pushed it as “look at the multimedia applications of the CD”. My knowledge of the CD32 is pretty slim, but as far as I know, it was most commonly used for CD compilations of games A1200 users could get on floppy, or for small modifications to those games like an FMV intro cutscene. A strong push from the top, getting developers to use CDs as more than shiny floppy disks might have changed their fortunes.

I hear that. Yeah, with these old computers everyone's process is the right way - for them. I don't use original mechanical hard drives that much (and I have the space for them) as I really don't miss that sound. But I do have the space for an external CD drive, and last week I built a SICK looking external DF2: Gotek that site perfectly on top of the CD drive. The Gotek's case came from an old original serial port external floppy drive. It's nuts! And I love it.

But what it didn't have was any ability to rewrite, which remained a HUGE advantage of the floppy format, even into early 90's CD gaming. The games that perhaps made best use of the format were the likes of point and click adventures, particuarly ones with spoken voices.
