Not to mention that Americans dominate the media compared to the British, and America is a global superpower, both of which make American English far more relevant to the world at large. 6 inches is ~15cm so it's also probably easier to eyeball if you have a sense of what 5 or 10cm looks like (roughly the width of your hand give or take). Though the inverse is to measure by thumbs as thumbs are roughly an inch long.
