Nathan never smoked cigarettes, but he worked in a smoky casino, and this permanently damaged his lungs. He slowly became too sick to dance at Pow-Wows, a part of his Oglala Sioux tradition. He said, "It's like breathing through a straw. You can't get enough air." In this video, he explains how he copes when his body says "No." Nathan spoke out as part of CDC's Tips From Former Smokers campaign. He died at 54 of illnesses caused by secondhand smoke exposure.

This is really upsetting, especially because he never smoked himself and it was all second hand. I understand most smokers regret it and want to quit, however they should at lead be conscious of where they are when they smoke so they don't ruin the lives of others. That is something that all smokers can control, and if they can't they need to deal with it and QUIT. Rest in peace Nathan

I know how you feel, sir. My dad used to smoke. Whenever I would walk by my dad when he was smoking, I'd accidentally inhale the second hand smoke. I'd get really bad sore throats from it. That's why he quit smoking all the time. He's been smoking since the age of 19. He's 42 years old now.

And then there's all these people out there who insist that it's "their choice" and it "only affects them" and all that crap. Your "right" to smoke ends where other people's rights to clean air and a healthy life begin.

this is something beyond incredible. I cant believe he died, but he told everything before he past away. smoking should be erased from existance

I never been in a casino, but I heard how common smoking can be in those kinds of places. Even so, it doesn't excuse the fact that Nathan was cheated out of everything. I, as a fellow non-smoker, work in a grocery store where smoking should obviously be far less common, but the level of smoking there is through the roof. In fact, I keep wondering whether or not I myself will be just another statistic, especially considering that I had to deal with some smokers who don't even care that I'm even there.
